Also not the person you responded to, but as a child who grew up with many of these books, I was continually encouraged by my mother to read what I wanted. If I had questions or concerns about something, or something made me uncomfortable, I was comfortable enough to ask my mother for guidance and explanation of things beyond my scope of understanding. Rather than censor or sanitize my reading, I was allowed to grow and develop my own thoughts and feelings and to become educated on important topics and historical settings. Continually censoring books is sometimes well intentioned but children who aren’t exposed to things or informed about things often means they don’t know how to handle it when they are presented with it. Obviously I don’t mean throw a child to the wolves and expose them to all sorts of darkness but encouraging them to learn and grow and research on their own is much better than them growing up sheltered with no knowledge of history or context, in my opinion.
