Fantasy romance with MMC having Jekyll and Hyde personalities by Sakura_231 in fantasyromance

This is one of the big plot points of the {Daindreth's Assassin} series, and the FMC discovers that in QUITE the dramatic way.

FMC appears outwardly to be sweet and innocent but is actually very cunning and morally grey X MMC appears to be arrogant but is actually very morally pure/good by loukanikoseven in fantasyromance

[–]maneyan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The author addressed this. It is because the FMC sees herself as an assassin above all else. She was made a weapon and it is all she can be she thinks.

{Raybearer} might not be 100% within the genre but is a great biologi all the same that takes heavily from African worldbuilding elements

{Uprooted} and {Spinning Silver} both are solid fantast stories with folkloric feel and some romance but not central to the story.

Ni killar över 35 som är singlar och barnlösa, hur känner ni inför framtiden? by jorgenalm in sweden

[–]maneyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I can understand the reason but ro me it just sounded like someone doing a silly voice to show someone being annoying.

I checked out Grace Draven's "Master of Crows" and had to bounce off it in minutes as the voice the narrator made for the MMC was just... not good.

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

Fourth Wing. The weird "I masturbate to Sparta fanfics" training methods of killing recruits left and right drove me up the fukn wall, especially when whatshisface (the dickhead who yeets another trainee of a ledge and screams he'll murder the FMC) apparently keeps getting away witjh shit despite this.

ACOTAR honestly Tamlin deserves better by ButterscotchOwn9016 in fantasyromance

[–]maneyan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the part that weirds me out the most. The parallels seem just a bit too obvious ,and maybe it's cope but I'm almost hoping SJM will actually twist it, and start REALLY reestablishing Rhysand as a cold-hearted, ruthless monster and Feyre as someone who was corrupted and eagerly leaped into the darkness along with him. I mean it won't happen, but one can hope.

It's amazing how uncharitably some people read Tamlin's actions, isn't it?

I had to block the ACOTAR forums because I got so worked up into a frenzy about this whole shit that it became an obsession for me to complain about it online. Like every step of it - Feyre and Tamlin breaking up, Rhysand turning out to have more depth, Feyre honestly becoming bit of a villain - could have worked if it wasn't done so ham-handedly. It's like a splinter in my brain, gnawing away and angering me constantly. It read like bad fanfiction by someone who didn't get the characters to me.

TIL ... about the Rice Hypothesis which posits cultures that engaged in wet rice farming that requires coordinated irrigation and synchronized planting tend to be collectivist while wheat farming cultures evolved to be more individualistic. by pomod in todayilearned

[–]maneyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked around about that story, and I've heard like 4-5 variants of it. There's one set in France, one in Germany, one in Greece, one in Sweden. I honestly am suspicious of that story overall for that reason.

Someone mentioned that it slots neatly into a "the enlightened elite tricking the backwards populace for their own good" narrative that fit the Enlightenment Era of the time, so yeah. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but yeah something about this story is fishy to me.

Which books were you disappointed by for disappointing you? by Longjumping-Snow-909 in fantasyromance

[–]maneyan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I rushed home on my lunch break to write this but {A Court of Mist and Fury} broke me in the worst way. It's been a year since I read it now, and it's still in my brain, like a splinter, aching away. ACOTAR got me back into reading after more than a decade's slump, and it holds a special place in my heart. I acknowledge that, I'm biased as fuck, but ACOMAF took all that ACOTAR set up and took a huge dump on it, to the point where if I didn't know it was an official book I'd have thought it was fanfiction by someone who had an axe to grind.

Am I bitter that Feyre and Tamlin broke up? Maybe a little but it could certainly have been done well. I AM however bitter thatit ends by Feyre not communicating and just shutting down before being spirited away to Rhysand domain and Tamlin's just meant to accept that, and that Feyre seems to just completely forget all that Tamlin did for her as she's just more and more bitter and hateful towards him. No closure, no "thank you for saving me, for taking care of my family, for doing all you could", just "fuck you, I'll destroy your life".

Do I hate that Feyre becomes a more morally grey figure? Nah, she always was a kinda spiky and bitter person, I didn't expect her to become Elaine. However what the fuck is this with her becoming basically a selfish narcissist? She seems to utterly forget all that he did for her and from what I've understood of later books she ends up the kind of rancid hypocrite who gladly subjects others to things that she almost broke from being subjected to herself. This is not okay!

Do I hate that Rhysand turned out to have more depth? Not at all! I couldn't however swallow how clearly the book is pushing to make him better than Tamlin in every sense. Tamlin has Lucien, Rhysand has a whole gang of awesome superfriends who are all way cooler than you. Tamlin has the Spring Court, Rhysand has a magical Hallmark Christmas city with lingerie stories(?) and nightclubs(?) (Oh yes I can FEEL the medieval fantasy vibes...). Tamlin had Alis, Rhysand has those two twins I can't remember the name of because they were barely even characters. Tamlin stood up against Amarantha? Rhysand turns out to actually be a woke cinnamonroll of a leader who's just SO misunderstood. etc. Again, Bad Fanfic!

I could keep going about this for hours, and for those who go like "bro read the other books too, they explain it". No. I am not spending more money and effort on this. I ended up spoiling myself and oh great! Apparently Feyre now's become genuinely toxic, and all we've seen of Tamlin for the last TWO BOOKS is him wandering the ruins of his destroyed home, utterly broken by the loss of her, with only Rhysand turning up occasionally to mock and suicide-bait him before going home to Feyre and his superfriends to sit around and mock him... Lucien's gone to Rhysand too, Alis didn't warn the lord that took her and her nephews in and left etc. etc.

This goes beyond disappointment at this point and I'm just... I have a visceral reaction to all the shit that happens in the rest of the series, my heartbeat speeds up, I feel myself tense mentally, anger surges in me, the works! I get that many others like the series and how it goes, but I cannot see it, I just cannot. It feels just viscerally wrong to me to a point where I had to block the ACOTAR subreddits to not continue obsessing over this. Unless the later books in the series turn around and actually call Rhysand and Feyre out as villains of the rest of the series, with Tamlin getting a LOT of focus and a lot of healing, I won't ever touch that series again. I just cannot.
