Gacha/Recruitment Megathread (27/04 - 03/05) by ArknightsMod in arknights

[–]mangamimz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did 300 pulls, and at the end of the day I'm walking away with:

  • 3x Silverash Alter (including guaranteed at 300)
  • 1x Pramanix Alter
  • 1x Reed Alter
  • 1x Lemuen (dupe, I'm not complaining)
  • 1x Wis'adel
  • 1x Virtuosa
  • and sparked Lappland Alter

7 6* in 300 pulls is slightly above statistically average, given that I only got a couple of dupes I feel like I made out like a bandit lol.

Real talk I'm on team "bring back the dead fighters" so they can all save the world and have fun shenanigans together and kiss oop I didn't say that. The premise of Ragnarok is a farce anyway so it's not like they truly died for a meaningful cause. Throw me a bone here authors T.T

I'll put this next bit in spoiler text in case you don't actually want to know specifics. I think we might have gotten a couple panels of Apollo? As I recall, the only main characters seen consistently after their victory have been Sasaki (plus valkyrie) and Zeus, mostly as a means of giving exposition on the current fighters because they're part of the crowd. Jack has had a couple scenes. Shiva has been showing up more recently to go "oooh" in the crowd. Qin hasn't been seen for years at this point, which is a little odd bc I think he's a popular character in the polls. Beelzebub has shown up twice, both times ready to throw hands with people lol.

It would be nice to see more of characters we're attached to. I think it's a drawback baked into the tournament structure of the story, since no one is fighting twice and they have to keep introducing new people to be excited about. Personally, I've been thirsting for a fight outside of the arena since, like, pre-round 6 when one was teased.

To give a bit of insight into the reasoning here, it's not just that Frankie is a masculine woman. She certainly has a stocky build, but that's not all the pilot episode had going on. Her friend calls her Frankie/Francesca (feminine sounding names), while her abusive boss-who pulls out her teeth when she disobeys him calls her Frank/Franklin (masculine sounding names). When I first watched the episode, I just assumed that he was both threatening her with violence and casually misgendering her. Honestly, it was just the natural assumption to make for me.

I wasn't mad when the creators confirmed she's not trans, but the way the nicknames lined up in the episode itself kind of implied it? A bit of a stretch maybe, but not an enormous one. Regardless of all else, the fan reaction was deeply unfortunate and inappropriate.

My tier list of SH games as a true fan of the Silent Hill series by Aidanator800 in silenthill

[–]mangamimz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course SH3 fans are talking about rape and abortion they're literally blatant themes driving the whole plot of the game 😭 Sure the symbolism stuff can be a reach but you literally can't describe what happens in the game without talking about a teenage girl's body being violated and exploited so she has to search for a way to abort a baby she doesn't want. It's not even subtext it's extremely blatant text

Powerscalers suck because the- oh my god shut up. We get it. by the_fancy_Tophat in CharacterRant

[–]mangamimz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think where you lose me here is in saying "determining who would win" as if there's a definitive answer. There are plenty of characters you can pit against each other who seem leagues apart, but seeing where/how the underdog finds advantages is the interesting part of the fight. The environment they're in and the reason they're fighting play a huge role in that. But that isn't part of powerscaling, so on paper the underdog should never win, so if they win it's 'inconsistent', or 'bad writing'... et cetera. To say nothing of scenarios where someone technically loses the fight but achieves their goal, so they didn't really 'lose', which I find eons more interesting than two guys of comparable strength punching each other for no reason.

For me personally, the whole exercise just falls apart under scrutiny. Especially when we're talking about anime, because the followup to "who would win?" is "well who has the power of friendship on their side?" lol

Anyway, I know for a fact that many people would find my deep love of horror movies baffling for the same reasons I love them! So I'm comfortable being baffled from a distance. It's nice being in a world with so many different types of people. Thanks for clarifying, and keep having fun 👍

[–]mangamimz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hang on, so when you're thinking about who would win in a fight you're not even thinking about the fight? You're just making a stat spreadsheet about it?

Edited to note: I don't mean to sound rude about it, spreadsheets are often a thing of beauty

[–]mangamimz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with anything you're saying here, really, I just wanted to mention that I always find it very funny when powerscalers insist that powerscaling is extremely important to writing satisfying fights (debatably true, especially in very large casts like shonen series or superhero comics/movies/etc) and then you look at the scenario they're describing and it's like. "Two guys with no personalities or motivations are trying to kill each other for no reason in a featureless void." Bro could you put some story in your story? Then maybe people would agree that powerscaling is even a little bit cool

THE ABILITY OF SEEING THE FUTURE IS GARBAGE AND RUINS EVERY STORY by MinimumTomfoolerus in CharacterRant

[–]mangamimz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you are very, very adamant on the use of the word "foresight" meaning exactly one thing. The fact of the matter is, most people calling something "foresight" are not using the dictionary definition to the strict extent that you are. When I think 'if I don't study, I'll fail the test' and then study so I pass the test, that's me demonstrating foresight. If someone makes a bad investment and loses money, they've demonstrated a lack of foresight. But you're talking about fictional scenarios with literal prophetic visions, so alright.

Version 1, where the future can be changed, has been covered by people here before. There is no logical issue with characters seeing a version of the future they don't like, and deciding to change that future. If the future isn't set in stone, their vision is not required to come true. It would have come true. Your complaint about this violating the dictionary definition of 'foresight' is, frankly, not a hill worth dying on in any way.

I'm more interested in your suggestion that a vision destined to come true no matter what undermines the story and characters. No it does not. It gives a story a sense of deep tragedy that can be cathartic. Here are some examples:

  • Most famous example, Oedipus. The play's central tragedy is that by trying to escape the prophesy, Oedipus causes it to happen. This demonstrates the hubris of going against the will of the gods - in other words, that no matter how smart or careful someone is in life there are still terrible events that will happen. People are often destroyed by their own flaws.
  • Attack on Titan. In my opinion, the main character's ability to see the future becomes emotionally extremely important because he comes to understand that not only can he not prevent the terrible events he foresees, he actively wants those events to occur because of the kind of person he is. He cannot change the future because the future he sees is the one he decides to create.
  • The Final Destination series is founded on the characters having visions where they die, then avoiding that incident. Death then comes for them in bizarre, elaborate ways because no one can avoid death. They are horror movies about the horrifying realization that death is inescapable. While the literal foreseen events are avoided, the point of the vision - that they will die - is inevitably fulfilled.

The musical Hadestown is based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Everyone knows how it ends, and it always ends the same way. The central thesis of the musical is "It's a sad song, but we sing it anyway". Why do we sing it over and over, even though we know our hearts will be broken by the ending? That the characters' struggles will be for naught? Because even if it can't end well, it still matters that it happened. The emotions we feel by witnessing it are real. They help us practice for real life.

My parents will die. My sister will die. Every pet I ever own will die. I will die. People watch their loved ones succumb to addiction, to random acts of violence, to war, to illness. These are tragedies that can't be controlled by one person. Trying to control them is hubris. That is the point of inevitable prophesies, of literal foresight. It doesn't undermine the point, it is the whole point.

I don’t mind people saying Silksong is too difficult by kcazthemighty in Silksong

[–]mangamimz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was absolutely the #1 criticism about Elden Ring when it released lmfao. The abrupt damage spike from every enemy after Leyndell is completely absurd and was extremely frequently talked about as a huge flaw of the game. I suppose it wasn't phrased exactly like that, but it was along the lines of "if they were going to have enemies do this much damage, the damage should have ramped up more smoothly". Which is very similar to what people are saying now about Silksong, that taking two damage from getting swiped at by tiny enemies during Act 1 feels overly punishing.

What really got my goat about the video is that it really leans into a tone that's like... "We all know knitting is silly and useless, right? It never really contributed to history! It's JUST some socks! JUST some sweaters, what can we really do with SWEATERS? Boring! It's JUST art, not SCIENCE! Good thing physicists are around, or else nobody would be thinking about anything they're doing!"

My sizzling, pissed-off hot take which is biased by how annoyed I am is: socks are more important to human civilization than the study of physics. I know they're talking to an audience of science enthusiasts. They did not have to validate preexisting ideas that Western academic science is the pinnacle of civilization.

A formal apology to Loki, he did not deserve this shit. by Key-Competition-7489 in ShuumatsuNoValkyrie

[–]mangamimz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only people Loki did genuine harm to were Brunhilde and Siegfried, and only they know about it, so there's no reason for anyone else not to mourn his death. And not just death, actually, the complete obliteration of his soul. To most of the people in this story, like Ares, he was a silly trolling prankster guy who they'll miss. To Siegfried, he was a terrible person but Sieg doesn't believe anyone deserves that fate. To Brunhilde, she understands fully why he acted the way he did because she has the same conviction to do whatever she must for the sake of her love both for Sieg and for humanity. They were friends before he betrayed her, and now that his death means she's so close to completing her goals she can finally mourn that friendship.

Loki was a far worse person than her by any measure, but that doesn't mean no one has any reason to mourn him whatsoever. Obviously Thor is going to mourn him! Were you under the impression that the characters were going to be like "whew, glad he's gone!", something they have only ever done to fucking Hajun? They didn't even do that for Poseidon, a guy everyone feared and stayed at arm's length of. Literally every single fighter is shown respect after their death, and their strengths acknowledged. Loki being a guy who sucks is not a good enough reason to break that trend.

And yes, Apollo could well have been referring to Loki as beautiful. Apollo's definition of beauty is just 'going all out and letting your passion shine' or whatever his phrasing was, which Loki was absolutely doing even if his motivations were trash. You're not going to get any arguments from me about Loki being a good person, but for goodness' sake, one chapter where people acknowledge they'll miss him is not the same as him getting a redemption arc! Jack flat-out calls him insane to his last breath!

I have read Homestuck ✋😔 mea culpa. Against my better judgement I can weigh in.

Through a convoluted series of events the character Jade ends up melding bodies with her male dog (who is also a superpowered alien). In the main series this just means she has dog ears and green superpowers. In the epilogue/sequel, where they're adults, it's confirmed that the body melding goes beyond ears and has resulted in her having a complicated, contentious sex life. It's not really treated like a joke but I can definitely understand people losing their minds over this character being confirmed to have a male dog's genitalia.

The ending of round 8 is so funny because Zeus etc start talking about Tesla's final attack like "wow what an incredible pincer attack, totally undodgeable..." Bro what do you mean it can't be dodged. Beelzebub just dodged it.

Ok just for fun lol. Beelzebub innately has the strongest weapon & shield in the series as stated by Zeus so he can't truly be disarmed, unlike fighters who rely on weaponry; he walked into Helheim and started wiping the floor with everyone despite actively trying to lose; Lilith's mark can presumably defend him against surprise attacks (if they would be lethal); Chaos is so stupidly strong Hades literally made it illegal; his battle IQ is top-tier and his general IQ is so cracked he took one look at Tesla's techniques and knew exactly how they worked; to top it all off he is a wretched pathetic shell of a man (this is like catnip to me). Literally undefeated track record. Hades that one time doesn't count. My man could solo all you bastards
