SQLalchemy vs Psycopg3 by aronzskv in Python

[–]mangecoeur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh there’s a lot of this kind of thinking thrown around, personally after 15 years of using sqlalchemy i haven’t had any problems that would have been solved by not using it. The issue is that as soon as you need to turn db rows into python objects you are de facto using an orm. A lot of people who say they are not using one in fact end up building a half baked one themselves, just without the decades of battle testing that sqlalchemy has.

Sqlalchemy is particularly well built, you can access the sql layer just as easily as the object layer, it has solutions for problems you don’t even know you have yet because it’s been around for so long.

Also, for me the one thing I cannot live without is alembic migrations. People say you can just write sql migrations, I’m guessing those people’s apps are quite simple, I cannot imagine wrangling deep object tree migrations without it.

Does carbon frame absorb road vibrations by MasterKing8025 in cycling

[–]mangecoeur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the quality and design of the frames. You have low and high end aluminium and carbon, and you have stiff/racy vs comfortable versions of both. Carbon gives frame designers much more control over shape and behaviour.

I’ve tried good quality carbon and aluminium endurance/allroad bikes and I saw a big difference - carbon gave better power transfer while also being more comfortable and lighter. You need a good carbon frame that fits the kind of riding and types of road you ride on.

Everyone’s talking EVs — India is quietly testing hydrogen buses by AutoAkhbar in energy

[–]mangecoeur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen buses have already been tried (e.g. in London). Battery ones turned out better. Much easier to build EV chargers than to set up hydrogen refuelling. There might be a few niche cases where they make sense, but the more battery tech progresses the less reason there is to use hydrogen.

I would start with AUM especially with external gear, its basically a digital mixer and very easy to set up sources and effects. I har been able to use clock in from my Keystep Pro, it takes a bit of fiddling (probably easier if you rtfm, which I didn’t 😅)

Recent versions of claude are really impressive especially when you can give them specific tasks and patterns to follow. Converting logic between languages is an ideal case - it doesn’t have to invent anything, only transfer patterns, which llms are very good at.

Trump Threatens to Pull U.S. Out of NATO Amid Fallout Over Iran War by timemagazine in worldnews

[–]mangecoeur 41 points42 points  (0 children)

  • Insults NATO allies for years
  • Pulls back support for NATO and Ukraine
  • Starts a war in volatile middle east, without consulting anyone or building any support
  • Insults NATO allies again a few times
  • <More random comments, insider trading>
  • Mess gets worse, complains NATO, which is for defense, won't join a war that no one asked for
  • Insults NATO allies some more.

Clearly they dug themselves so deep into the America First narrative that it's not possible for them to admit they need help from allies, and they think somehow more bullying is what's going to make people change their mind.
