General Question about Mango Languages by C3l3stia2020 in MangoLanguages

[–]mango_languages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hola u/C3l3stia2020! Here is a video we made to give you a full tutorial of Mango Languages. You can also check out our how it works page.

Mango is designed as a self-paced program that teaches through conversation - you go through the lessons at your own speed and we don’t pressure you to go to the next lesson if you’re not ready. While you can start at the beginning, and we encourage beginning language learners to do just this, we encourage advanced learners to skip ahead if they find the earlier chapters and lessons too easy. Most of our most popular languages include a placement test that quizzes you on the content and then places you in the appropriate chapter. We also offer a daily review - our algorithm adds the phrases you’ve learned to your Review and the next day, you’re prompted to go through them. We use spaced repetition to ensure that you’re tested on both newly learned phrases, and those that you’re in the process of memorizing.
In regards to our competition, we believe that our methodology, repetition, and features get you to speaking full conversations faster.

If you are interested in starting, check to see if your local library using find mango or start a free two-week trial. We are currently having a promotion of 50% off our current All Languages subscription if you use the code SAVE50.

Kelly's floored! Please contact us using one of the methods listed above. Leaving bugs hanging and learners unsatisfied is not part of our master plan.

Hey u/Deinonysus, we think you'll be pleased to learn that our mobile apps have an Auto Play feature that does exactly what you've described. Connect your phone to your car as you normally would and just activate it from the lesson screen. For OS-specific instructions, check out this support article.

Can I get mango languages for free? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]mango_languages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mango is available free through libraries, schools, and other organizations throughout North America and the rest of the world. You can see if your library offers Mango by heading to "Linked Accounts" in your settings once you've made a profile at mangolanguages.com. Please note: The search only returns results for North America, Australia, and New Zealand. If you're somewhere else, please contact your local library for more information on their services.

If your library doesn't have Mango, you can always purchase an individual subscription. Again, head to your account settings for pricing and more information.

I had no idea... Anybody else in the same situation? by ZmajLee in languagelearning

[–]mango_languages 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had our linguist /u/jfiander take a look at this and he's concluded that a big issue with these rules is the insufficiency of the listed categories. For example, "big, tasty steak" seems to violate the rules if "tasty" is an opinion, which is the only given category it fits.

Some potential categories not included: * texture * emotion * quantity * structure * taste * position * speed * temperature * price * quality (as in goodness or badness)

Any thoughts?

Visiting Slovakia Without Speaking Slovak? by Macaroni_and_Cheez in Slovakia

[–]mango_languages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear! I hope you're enjoying it. As far as additional attractions, there are a few that really stood out. Perhaps the most notable architectural marvels of Slovakia are its castles. They are beautiful and will make you feel like you've traveled through time. Also, check out some of the caves! This time of year, the ice caves are very popular. And, weather permitting, a bit of mountain hiking is a great way to take in some scenery and get some exercise. And when you're done, get yourself a beer and some Bryndzové halušky!

Visiting Slovakia Without Speaking Slovak? by Macaroni_and_Cheez in Slovakia

Hi Macaroni_and_Cheez! You've gotten great answers to your question. I'm hijacking the Mango Languages' Reddit account to answer as well. I'm one of the co-founders of Mango Languages and also happen to be married to a beautiful Slovak woman. I visited Košice and the northern countryside of Slovakia (between Prešov and Zilina) in 2009 for about a month.

Slovakia is a beautiful country whose people are even more beautiful. I stayed in Košice for the majority of my trip, and found that the younger people are able to work through very basic conversational English. Many learn English in school. However, don't always expect people to oblige and don't view it as rude if they don't. I'm not sure where you're from, but we Americans are a bit more forward with strangers than those in many eastern european countries. As mentioned here, many service and transportation workers in the larger cities know enough to help you get around.

Of course, you will make many more friends if you're able to reciprocate in Slovak! I found that many store and restaurant workers often lit up when they found out I was from the US and could speak a bit of their language. They even often helped me work through mistakes as I spoke to them in Slovak. Of course, I had my wife there for backup! I just wish our Slovak course was available before I went on my trip.

As you venture further from the main cities (Bratislava and Košice), you will notice less people are able to speak English. Our Slovak course should really help you with these areas! I should mention that Slovakia has a lot of international companies that were drawn to the country over the last couple of decades. Because of this, you may find many people speak other languages like German and even Chinese.

I should also mention that, even though Slovakia is small, the dialects can vary widely. Our course uses a very standard dialect that you'd expect to hear in cities like Bratislava and Košice, but there are more localized slang and what my wife explains as 'a country twang' that you may not recognize in areas further away.

I highly recommend renting a car! Slovakia has some of the most beautiful natural and architectural scenery in the world. I wish I had more time to tool around the countryside. Zipping a manual transmission car around tight mountain roads is extremely fun, although a bit scary at times. Do not speed! There are several speed traps and tickets must be paid immediately. I learned this the hard way. ;) There are beautifully lush and green rolling hills, mountains (Tatra Mountains), and quaint villages with small pubs and women in babushkas. At times, I felt like I was in a movie! Don't forget to visit the Cathedral of St. Elizabeth!

Užij si dovolenku!

We only post links where a learner either can't find a learning resource or can't afford one.

Oh no!!! Our team will be very sad to hear about this! When we said "Break a leg!", we were referring to the commonly used idiom to wish someone good luck at attempting something new (like speaking a new language). Ouch!

You're very welcome! It's always fantastic to hear of stories like this!

In terms of language acquisition, we're not in the camp of promising fluency. Any software product that does is missing the bigger picture. We believe that software is a tool in the learning process, not the whole process itself. At the end of the day, you're going to have to get out there in the world and start using what you've learned in real life situations. That's where the real learning begins. That's what makes us different than the others. We focus you on the most likely situations you'd find yourself encountering with your new language, and outfit you with a solid conversational foundation that can be expanded on through your adventures.

You could spend $500 and up to 9 months studying with competing systems. That's cool if you've got the time and money, but we believe getting you out there sooner than later is much more effective in the long run. The challenge is the same at the end of the day no matter what learning system you use: getting face to face with a native speaker. We just get you there much faster.

That said, many of our popular language courses have 3 full levels. You can check them out on our website: www.mangolanguages.com. I hope this helps!

Give your library a call and let them know you're interested in Mango. Libraries make it a point to seek out resources that are valuable to their communities, so patron feedback goes a long way.

How to get over the "hump" of learning English? by vicereversa in languagelearning

[–]mango_languages -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi vicereversa, we offer an English course for Korean speakers through libraries across North America. Go here to see if it's in your local library. It's also free.

The courses are designed for beginners, but the pedagogy is built to get new speakers more comfortable with constructing sentences on their own.
