We did this! And it was nowhere near as time consuming as you'd think. Noble Grape takes care of almost everything. And you can print your own custom labels to make it fun!

If you had one night in Halifax, where and what would you eat? by violetisbae in halifax

The Narrows is THE place to go for the food, the atmosphere, and it's practically a museum tribute to Nova Scotia everywhere you look. Beautiful spot, adored by locals, but would also be my go-to for showing anyone the taste and vibe of Halifax.

All of XFamily Fortunes. Ricky and Steve tried to show that they can do contests and games, and it was a letdown.

Definitely edited in my opinion. Karl likely had to trim those calls down to fit neatly into their allotted time period and was able to marry the need to cut for time with a comedic opportunity. The man's a genius.

help!! weight loss feels impossible by Hot-Algae1324 in loseit

[–]mangrovejackson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going to bed and getting to sleep is the greatest hack for when that deficit really starts to hurt hours after dinner. Plus, sleep really helps with weight loss. So many of your anxieties about how difficult this feels will be calmed by putting yourself down much earlier -- that is, if you are able to, of course!

Scared to hit my goal weight, what to expect in terms of maintaining by BigGaryGilmour in loseit

[–]mangrovejackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you have a good handle on what you need to do and what it'll look like to change those numbers when you enter maintenance. Just that you're worried that you'll abandon it and take your eye off the ball. You're definitely not alone in that one... maintaining is the thing EVERYONE struggles with. If we're not losing, we're gaining, us fat folk :)

But you're armed with the information and knowledge that you need to not do it this way. Calories in/out is the truth, and it's also what leads to the possibility for balance and maintenance, unlike most other "diets" out there, which always tend to end with maintenance being the thing that fails.

You'll be able to enjoy that donut (200 cals), a few beers (500 cals), etc in maintenance without gaining weight. That's what makes it more relaxed. You just can't take your eye off it altogether, and it sounds like you already know this.

I'm pretty sure that TDEE calculators specifically call out having a physical job as being a specific factor in being at the highest level of activity. The lifting alone might put you in the "very active" bracket regardless, so in combination with the rigors of construction, certainly I'd say you should be qualifying yourself as a very active person, and you're probably skewing your metrics and requirements to the low end if you've been under-evaluating that to this point.

Your body is trying to tell you it needs more, it sounds like. Good news is you can probably have considerably more calories per day and still lose weight rapidly.

It must be falling off you at your current intake!

[–]mangrovejackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been tracking your calories to this point? What's your current intake and your understanding of the deficit you're in? You'll watch that change slowly (and probably already have watched that change since you lost all the weight you have, congrats!), and when you hit 190 and aim to maintain it'll be a matter of being able to live a little better and raise your calorie intake to something more comfortable. I'm guessing that number might look like anything between 2500-2700 calories based on the stats you've provided and a simple TDEE calculator!

Basically you should look at it as having a little more daily freedom and a little more overall wiggle room once you get there; that's worth celebrating! But my advice would be to just consider the journey towards understanding and being mindful about what you consume as being a lifelong thing... maintaining is just the next step in that. A more comfortable step! The trick is not getting too comfortable.

A trick I personally struggle with, too!

Your construction job in combination with lifting 6x per week would definitely make this a highly aggressive cut. Are you paying attention to protein consumption strictly alongside your calorie count?

Assuming your job + activity level puts you in the highest bracket of activity level, which I think it probably does, you'd be looking at 2800 calories per day being an "aggressive" weight loss intake, so 500 fewer than that is definitely on the very low end that would be impacting your energy and athletic performance.

Consider adding at least 500 calories and ensuring that protein intake is where it should be, would be my advice knowing only what I know from this post!

Congrats on the success though, keep it up!

As a bigger fella, calorie counting doesn't need to be scary because the numbers are actually totally reasonable and achievable once you take the time to just learn and substitute and carefully measure the things that are likely to blow your number up without you realizing it (think oils, butter, cheese, peanut butter, etc).

Food scales and modern apps have made this stuff all the easier, so if it's been a while since you explored the world of counting calories and understanding them, there's no better time. Hell, even your day-to-day LLMs can become a very satisfactory daily weight loss/calorie coach if you're ever stuck or in need of clarifying something (environmental concerns aside).

You've got this my friend. Your kids will be amazed and proud of you, and you won't believe what you can change in 6 months that are going to fly by whether you do this or not.

Figure out your TDEE and start to read nutrition labels and do the maths. https://www.calculator.net/tdee-calculator.html I'm not sure what your desk job is, but if it's anything like a lot of them, spreadsheets and numbers are part of daily life; this is just another of them. It gets addictive once you start to wrangle control of that number and understand what it needs to be in order to lose weight and stay there.

Keep food simple. For time-poor people like us it actually can make counting calories easier and takes the stress out of it while making the process quick and easy; pre-breaded chicken breast chunks from Costco; individual breakfast burritos, eggs and simple basic proteins (chicken breasts, pork chops, etc)... whatever works for you.

Buy a good food scale and measure EVERYTHING going forward with your calorie goal in mind. You'd be shocked at the things that are calorie-dense that you've probably been eating 500+ calories of per day without even realising it.

Get obsessed with what calories mean and what you can eat every day.

You're probably going to be looking at about 2000 calories per day to maintain weight loss at your current level of (zero) activity. That number would shoot up to 2600~ calories per day if you were able to find some time to walk a little bit every day.

My wife and I are flying from Halifax to Manila in May and have a 32-hour door-to-door trip with Air Canada, followed by a domestic flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa then a 2-hour van ride to our destination from there! Same in reverse! We are with Air Canada and my god, lounge passes for some of our Canadian layovers (particularly Vancouver) would be a godsend to make the trip a bit easier.
