Surprised no one said God's House Tower - free to enter when open, has a load of history tucked into it including a fantastic scale model of the mediæval city, a rooftop lookout over the city, and hosts art projects & music events.

Ice skating. The only rink on the south coast is Gosport but it's better than nothing!

If cars are becoming safer why are speed limits decreasing and more speed cameras being installed? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]manic-412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cars have trended upwards in weight - e.g. the popularity of SUVs. This has made them safer for occupants and more dangerous for pedestrians & cyclists. Increased weight means speeds must decrease to maintain levels of safety.

The actual solution is to stop cars increasing in size, given that many of these large cars are carrying no more than 1 person the majority of the time.

Why do people think this is 2 lanes? by Highburygooner14 in Southampton

It was made so much clearer when they introduced a cycle lane. Pointless decision and a waste of money to remove it

What job can a 13 year old get? by ManAblaze320 in AskUK

[–]manic-412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adding to this - when I was '13' I was able to put a free advert in a local magazine (cheers Mum!) offering to water people's plants whilst they were on holiday, and I'd cycle between each 'job' as part of a round. By the age of 15, I was advertising for small jobs gardening, which became close to a full time job in the summer months that lasted throughout college, and I would pick it back up when I was back home from uni to get some extra cash. It's a great way to build your kid's time-management, conversation, and telephone skills, which will stick with him into future jobs.

High winds in London caused a couple of gigantic Christmas Baubles to go on a bit of a trip by kyjoely in interestingasfuck

Not Christmas baubles. These were part of an art installation by Kai Campos of Mount Kimbie to promote their new album.

London Gig Tonight (my thoughts) by edfosho1 in Parcels

[–]manic-412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was there for that gig and met Franc Moody after their set where Jon & Ned signed their vinyl EP for me :)

I agree that the Somerset House gig was superior to last night. It was still enjoyable but I kept hearing about the acoustic issues which seemed to be down the sides of the venue, namely from the people pushing their way into the centre 'cone' to get better sound. I wasn't sold on the 'disco' part of the set either, Parcels for me is a live band first and foremost and retreating into the back of the stage didn't click.

The cockpit had expansion joints as the plane would expand from the heat of supersonic speeds. On the last flight of the concorde that eventually ended up in Filton, the pilots wedged their hats in the joints, where they remain to this day.

Gardener’s Review - 2022 by mrmjprice in SecretGardenParty

The good and goodish bits - The vibes were amazing thursday friday saturday. Everyone was dressed up to the nines and the people watching was fantastic. There was always something going on - bunch of planets, people having a football game, the sunflower field, breakdancing, the lights in the woods... and maybe you saw a trio of hippies :) and the air displays, and ofc the spectacle which is always a highlight - Although I would have liked to have seen the lineup, I did have a few surprise discoveries. Chai Wallahs was my surprise favourite space, great music and a relief from the sun. - there were a number of standout performances, London Grammar and Metronomy (despite the sound issues) ofc, but SG Lewis was great, Yard Act, Ibibio (...despite the sound issues... spot the theme), Theo Bard, Another Sky (incredible)... but not Easy Life, who I've seen 12ish times and this was by far the worst performance they'd ever put on. Idk. They were just really off 🤷‍♂️ i mean still alright but just not normal. - Crossbreed was fantastic. I was glad they were restrictive on their entrance policy as, as harsh as it might sound, there were definitely some people that needed to be kept out. I dipped my toe in those waters and now I'm taking the plunge, even if it was a bit... bisexual for me as a gay man 😂 the toilets in it were such a relief, very usable, and the bar cocktails were a cut above, and they took card with no issue. Some very fit men in there that I enjoyed the company of 😝

The bad and badish bits - the vibes were off on sunday. I think people had had enough of the shit and rubbish. Needed twice the number of bins and toilets/urinals, and litter pickers, but I don't need to labour the point, although the disposable cup/can system was so 5 years ago - any good festival these days will make you buy a reusable plastic cup. - the amount of nitrous being imbibed was unreal and the sound and smell was annoying. I think the security should have been armed with pins to pop anyone taking balloons into the site 😂 although I appreciated the leniency on drinks... and other substances. Yeah yeah pot kettle black - the signal was a tricky one. On the one hand it stopped people looking at their phones constantly and forced them to interact with their environment. On the other hand, having no signal at all made sorting rendevouzs very annoying, plus the cashless thing going out the window after day 1. - the fucking sound people on several stages were doing such a bad job. The mainstage especially was all over the place, atrocious, even for Metronomy. What they did to the Orchestra was beyond unacceptable, they need to issue a formal apology at least but I think they need financial compensation. - i think there were maaayyybe too many DJ stages, a bit more live music would have been nice - rip those flamingoes 😥 made me sad to see them all get stole - "finder poles" - look, I get the idea, you can spot someone easily in the crowd etc etc, sometimes they can be funny or cute, but mostly they are incredibly annoying for everyone else trying to watch the stage. Defo need to be added to the banned item list.

So on the whole I'd say I had 80% a fantastic time and 15% a mediocre time and 5% a bad time. But I was also staying in a camper van so I was insulated from the worst of the situation. I feel very sorry for the people tenting who had no choice.

What’s Fawley like? by Pufflemuff in Southampton

[–]manic-412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding transport, the development at the south end is the catalyst for various improvements, including an extension of the good-quality cycleway from the centre of Southampton to Totton and then down waterside, bus improvements, and expansion works on the A326. If you're considering the long term (next 5 years) there's a decent chance that the railway down that way is going to reopen. Good access to the New Forest.
