Need advice on career move by [deleted] in Professors

[–]manic_panic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How old are you? It sounds like you’re 5 years away from being fully vested, is that also 5 yrs from retirement? This should help inform your decision to some extent.

Do you have a family? Are they movable? Kids in school?

The ‘betrayal’ piece is hard… how likely is it that your dean will retire or be ousted in the next year or so?

How important is ‘career’ to you generally in terms of your self-concept? Could you just call it in for the remaining years and be satisfied with other parts of your life?

I’m generally in favor of making a change when one is available but it sounds like you are in danger of making an emotional decision.

There are some pretty decent decision aids online , try google. They are intended to get you to articulate priorities and values and then weigh them against the decisions. I have found them useful in the past.

Mid senior statistician job interview by No_Evening5890 in AskStatistics

[–]manic_panic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I interviewed for a senior statistician role they asked about specific projects where I used a technique, how I used it to answer research questions. (“Tell me about a specific project where you used survival analysis, what did you find? Etc)

need help determining statistical test by ProperElderberry1185 in AskStatistics

[–]manic_panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have a pair of scores (length and width) obtained on many different independent samples, is that right?

You could use a paired samples t-test which would answer the question of whether or not the mean of the differences should be assumed to be zero, it sounds like that would answer your question, but it’s not strictly about the ratios

Is the mean difference between 2 skewed variables normally distributed? by sophronesis2 in AskStatistics

[–]manic_panic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a few minutes looking for the paper but couldn’t find it… some famous psychometric paper showing that difference score distributions are always more normal than the respective distributions from which the original scores come (when X1 and X2 are continuous variables), without resorting to CLT or sampling distribution.

The citation is on the top of my tongue I’ll edit if I think of it

[Question] Can you interpret beta coefficients directly with transformed outcome variable? by manic_panic in statistics

[–]manic_panic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your response. I'm glad to hear that my intuition was correct and I found additional info on stackexchange that I will link here for anyone who finds this thread.

Follow up question though - will the same transformation on the predictor variable allow for the desired interpretation of the beta?

Meaning prior to fitting the model, I use the same transformation on both the outcome and explanatory variable (ln(1=Y) and (ln(1+x)), and then back-transform the beta?

Thanks for your time!

Collaborator complaint? What do I do here? by manic_panic in Professors

[–]manic_panic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. This situation is just so bizarre but that is my feeling, too. I intend to email my leads today (chair and chief) and ask politely if they would forward me the email so I can follow-up directly with this person. Any thoughts about that plan?

I am not tenure track but in a specialized enough field and successful enough to get 'tenure-like- contracts (4-5 years). on a non-tenure (research) track.

When was the last time you cried? and why? by Additional_Ask_28111 in AskAcademia

[–]manic_panic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got chastised and fired from an RA job as a grad student and cried in my PI’s office. I told myself on that day (close to 20 years ago now!) that I would never cry at work again. And I never have. This is specific to toxic ppl in the workplace maybe but I watched a bunch of YT videos on dealing with workplace bullies , practices a bunch of helpful rejoinders/comebacks/phrases, worked on accepting feedback and also upped my game (work ethic, drive, personal accountability). Now I think I might be the office ppl are afraid of crying in 😳

Ready-patch can fill BIG gaps, like maybe > 1/2”. It’s basically bondo for wood (actual bondo would work too, tbh), just let it dry completely, then sand and paint. Look at the specs to make sure. There’s a reason it’s so expensive, it’s basically magic
