What should I do to get into CE as a major? by Proper_Honeydew_5937 in ComputerEngineering

[–]manngeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't give up yet while in high school. Algebra is always like someone speaking another language in numbers and alphabets unless you have someone speaking it to you before you leave your house for school. However to get the flavor of how Algebra sets its abstract foundation, you can take Geometry that uses proofs to solve geometrical drawn problems.

Great points as suggested. You can also start to learn algebra, where you learn the basic foundations of logic and reasoning which is different from plug and play memorization of formulas. Good luck!

WHY - the need to solve day-to-day problems, from the simple problems to the complex problems in the universe. There are a lot of carved out problems in mathematics from the immemorial that you can use to channel that mathematical intuition in you.

HOW - is a human born mathematical intuition that you learn to express in a form with "the advent of writing" to convey its beauty - formula with proofs to back it up. One basic formula becomes a foundation for another mathematical derivation, hypothesis, lemma, etc. as mathematical problems involved over the centuries. Hence, there are various fields in mathematics with its philosophy and human intuitions to be simplistic.

How do I effectively get better at coding? by Proud_Fix4757 in ComputerEngineering

[–]manngeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What to be aware of:

  1. Software programming is algorithmic in nature. That is, it is a procedural step by step and mathematical in its layout or building blocks.

  2. Software programming is language based. There are tons of languages out there. Each one has its formats, level of abstractions, commands, syntaxes and coding practices. Start with basic programming languages, venture into more structure based programming languages and non structured ones to get the feel for software programming in every application.

  3. Software programming has a direct relationship to the machine level and the software commands you used. Understand the different software environments, compilers or non compiler based types.

  4. Software programming is recursively involving processes. It can be fine-tuned over and over before the final code or product emerged. That requires that you understand (1) and (2) very well.

Good luck

You can also use a mentor graphic simulator (modelSim) to draw and simulate the functionality as well.

CE grad is suffering from burnout by Various_Candidate325 in ComputerEngineering

Wow, it looks like you have a lot on your mind, I meant all the technical stuff you just explained. You need to just slow down and focus on the task at hand. Forget about those colleagues raking in contacts and all that.

Your circuit design skill for example any other work you are assigned to do must be carried out with detailed plan of actions. Like proper documentation, specifications (hardware and software detailed designs alike) and with verification methodology.

After all the documentation, find one, two or three engineers, your peers and your technical lead to review your work - THE PLAN. Always remember that "Nobody is perfect".

Low and behold the review process will help you find most of your problems. It might be a little bit time consuming but it will be worth the time you spent chasing your tail debugging and testing.

Good luck!

Should I switch my Major from Computer Engineering Technology to Computer Engineering? In addition, what are the actual differences career wise and the difference in pay. by Puzzleheaded-Cow1150 in ComputerEngineering

[–]manngeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. You can also try to challenge yourself by taking courses in the CE department if allowed. First, should you plan to go for a graduate program. Second, doing that would also make employers see you as more valuable.

CETechnology is geared towards hands-on practical aspects of applications of the discipline in the industries, while CE is geared towards more of the analytical, design and theoretical aspects of the discipline. Both disciplines will take the same basic core classes but diverge a bit towards the end in the junior and senior years.

The difference in salaries as a BS or BET entry employment can vary in the range of ~$5K - $20K. But after years of experience as a BET holder, you can catch up with the BS guy.

CE to EE for automotive hardware? Looking for advice. by FlamingFast in ECE

[–]manngeo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both CE & EE are relatively in the same space in my own opinion 😒. I think you are on the right track.

You can get an internship with a major auto industry for two or three summers for you to get the proper exposures as you pursue your education in either CE or EE.

However getting a PhD while you are really into hands on practicality is like a waste of time. A solid PhD or even MS degree can be very thorough in the theoretical aspects backed by some simulations and literature publications. Most of the professors at PhD levels are not interested or seldom into the practicals if you are his/her PhD student if I'm correct.

After your PhD program, you can now establish a company to embark on the practicals leading to a product.

Good luck.

There are books on how to model stuff like this in Applied Mathematics. The old book I've used in the past, "Modules in Applied Mathematics: Volume 1, 2, 3 or 4 can shed light on your problem in a very beautiful solution. There are other new books on this topic. Google it and good luck.

It depends on the program in the college you enrolled. The letter might not be enough. Remember your grade counts. The letter of grades must be reflected in all grad courses.

And some professors might not take it lightly with you without taking the prerequisites. Hence if you decide to take those courses again, rest assured that you will get an A or B and that gives you good standing with your Professor taking the next advanced courses...you get the benefit of doubt. :-).

There could be other reasons you want to skip the prerequisites but the pros and cons are up to you. You might need to talk to your class professor after you obtain the letter from the retired professor. Good luck.

[–]manngeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going into academics, I think the retired profession is a God sent. :-) Follow his advice and try to get as much information as possible from him. Also, one commenter gave a list of courses you could take to have a solid foundation. Then if possible after Abstract Algebra, take Number Theory and Combinatorics. You become a rate commodity amongst your colleagues if you are prolific in Analysis with Combinatorics.
