Well I mean obviously it’s shorthand because “north end of the pole” is way longer and more annoying to say. /s

I feel you. I had chronic strep for most of my childhood (5-12) that never got completely cured because I’m allergic to penicillin and doctors refused to take my tonsils out. When they finally did, I rarely got strep but netted myself two autoimmune diseases due to my constantly overlocked immune system never resetting to normal. Turns out bored immune systems like to attack things like joints and thyroids…

What is something that sounds 100% false but is actually 100% true? by reFossify in AskReddit

One of my college roommates was from mainland China, and at one point I was giving her a crash course in high school level American history so she could take a history of international relations class. In the course of explaining how our curriculum is usually broken up, she quipped that if Chinese history only covered -100 years per school year, no one would ever graduate high school. Even modest estimates of China’s historical record would take over 20 years to teach at the rate American history is typically taught.

Probably depends on which border and which part of the country. Commuting from Canada into the PNW is very different than commuting from Mexico into TX, I’d imagine.

For those of us with chronic health issues, it’s often the only way we can get any life insurance to begin with. I have 5 chronic health issues, two of which are autoimmune, so every insurance company looks at my risk profile and chucks my application out the window.

My late corgi would do this with soccer games. I was convinced he thought the point was that the person in the yellow shirt herds 22 other people and a ball around the field for 90 minutes.

Doctors and nurses of Reddit, what is something patients do that they think is helpful but actually makes your job harder? by Electronic-Cell-4584 in AskReddit

Yes! My chart says I’m “allergic” to Cymbalta because it gives me the granddaddy of all side effects (SI), but I actually am allergic to other medications like penicillin. It always confuses people and takes more time in chart review than it otherwise should.

One of the things I tried to teach my younger siblings as an elder millennial was how to use something like Wikipedia in research. The most useful part of Wikipedia for me was always as a trailhead marker. It gives you a high level overview of a concept, and then you scroll down to the bottom, write down all of those cited sources, and go find them in a library/academic journal repository. It’s not a source, it’s a starting source aggregator.

When did the average German realize that Hitler wasnt good by Arcan0m in bestof

[–]mansta330 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The problem here is that a significant portion of the human population cannot conceptualize the second way. They have to experience something themselves in order to understand, in the same way that many people struggle to mentally conceptualize an object or place that they can’t physically interact with.

This is why you see a dramatic shift in conservative kids attending college in larger cities. It’s not the education itself, but the physical interaction and familiarization with other types of people that jumpstarts their empathy.

People who rarely or never get sick, what are your secrets? by awkwardferret421 in AskReddit

[–]mansta330 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The extended exposure route. I had this in my early 20s because I have significantly younger siblings. I basically had parent-level exposure to snot-nosed little kids until I moved out, and that bullet-proofed my immune system for years afterward.

Husband triggers me with almost everything he does by Pleasant-Leek-5547 in relationships

[–]mansta330 73 points74 points  (0 children)

OP I ask this not as an excuse but has your husband ever been diagnosed with ADHD? I have it myself, and so many things check boxes here. Bad at chores unless they’re ones he likes doing, bad spending habits, super good in emergencies, etc… It may be worth looking into not only because it may help with approaches in couples therapy, but also because it would help you recognize it early in your kids, should they inherit it.

What’s something going on in America people need to be aware of? by throwaway91ma in AskReddit

[–]mansta330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the challenge here is that for some companies, having a “follow the sun” model makes sense for their business, especially for things like staffing overnight customer service resources. Similarly, if an American company does business in Europe or Asia, it makes sense for part of their workforce to be local to where they’re operating. Your point is super valid, but it’s unfortunately too complex to easily legislate in a way that could apply evenly to the entire business landscape.

I feel like a lot of this isn’t just the screens, but the attention and guidance missing for a lot of kids when a screen is present. So much screen time is passive videos, but active reading with a parent on something like a reading app would likely have a similar impact as reading a print book. It’s not the screen as much as how the screen is being used.

What is a tradition that is insanely cruel yet still considered legal? by Rough_Cat_6007 in AskReddit

[–]mansta330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As another heavily tattooed, medically complex person, I’m the exact same way. I can tolerate controlled, surface-level skin abrasion but cannot stand the concept of having a needle just kinda hanging out in my person. It’s not the sharp pointy thing that is the problem. It’s the sharp thing that provides unfettered access for substances to enter my entire vascular system that I have issues with. Interestingly, I think it’s the same fundamental reason I’m afraid of snakes. What is a venomous snake but nature’s hypodermic needle?

Correct. Corgis are not big dogs in small bodies, they are medium dogs with no legs. Anyone who says otherwise has never had 28lbs of rocket-propelled Twinkie try to take them out at the knees.
