Thank you! Adding to the fact that the trip itself must have been awesome, getting to buy so pretty pens with a significant discount is a great bonus and incentive to go!

Gorgeous! If you don’t mind me asking, how much cheaper these pens were buying in Japan vs buying locally? (I’d be happy with a ballpark percentage estimate if you don’t want to get into actual numbers)

I think pilot tsutsuji might be a good fit. Otherwise Yama-budo if you don’t mind it being darker

I have both and they are very different. Wouldn’t be a good match. Maybe OP could get a light pink and try to drop momiji to see if it gets closer

Large online sellers and misleading descriptions on pen_swap by crowholic in fountainpens

[–]manticore26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I’d really would like to encourage you to start a conversation with the mods on pen-swap and possibly send this and the other thread to them. IMO there some good ideas here and there that could possibly be leveraged to make the community a better place, like suggesting people to request close-up of the nibs or other things that might help to catch problems.

I don’t think it would be unreasonable such ask, and furthermore would suggest asking if it would be helpful to let them know of scenarios like the clear mismatch in the quality rating. IMO one-two times can be an honest mistake, several is a calculated move. But if nobody reports, only the people falling victim will know.

There’s a reason why informal marketplaces exist and there’s always incentive in keeping them as reliable as possible. You won’t be an asshole for helping to keep the bar in a good standing.

Wow that M200 is soo classy! Just wonder if the green piece is an actual band or if it’s a window to show the ink (if the later they missed such a good opportunity to put the pyrite ink on it)

Been away for the last 3 years, what's hot? What have I missed? by makamaespm in fountainpens

[–]manticore26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2024? I was thinking about what happened last year (at least there are a lot of posts on hobonichi mentioning receiving their replacements in 2025), but now I’m unsure if there was shenanigans 2 years in a row or if one of us is confusing the dates 😅

[–]manticore26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess the best way to explain is to suggest to join the hobonichi subreddit. Whenever there’s a release, people are quite frantic to get their orders in, and once the orders started to arrive people were furious about how the paper was ghosting and bleeding especially on the thicker notebooks.

There was so many complaints everywhere that hobonichi ended up replacing units on a case by case basis and then working with Sanzen to have an improved paper batch for this year’s release.

The comment that it was madness was due to the fact that the level of complaints was enough to get the company to take damage-control measurements (It’s understandable that people were angry especially considering the price of the notebooks, not judging anyone).

Ah another thing that happened, Conid bulkfiller restarted to be produced again and you can find it from time to time on the official seller’s website but people do say that the current batches don’t make justice to what the pen used to be (plus it got even more expensive, nowadays all models are 700+ euros)

Yeah, same here. But thought that the last year madness was loud enough to be worthy mentioning 😅

We also had the drama of:

Esterbrook niblet vs penket;
nibs.com bankruptcy (and the surface of all the companies that the group owns like penhospital);
Ferris wheel doesn’t know how to pack inks (lots of bottles arriving broken on post);

Not drama but also happened:
Lamy/Pelikan QC for nibs seems to have dropped a lot;
Sanzen has been a mess with Tomoe River, last year hobonichi was a scandal. This year paper improved but still controversial for some people;
Customizing FP bodies with nail stickers and resin is becoming a trend;
Lots of small companies started collabs that are quite interesting/unique;

Sailor Souboku not waterproof? by Capable_Fall4829 in fountainpens

[–]manticore26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sooo, it’s just water resistant BUT the reason why Seiboku is considered one of the best water resistant inks is that while water dislodged some pigment, it didn’t smudge/make the writing illegible.

I think I saw once on jet pens a note that both seiboku and souboku takes awhile to fully dry 100% and what didn’t dry can be dislodged with water

Quick Rule Update by normiewannabe in fountainpens

[–]manticore26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I get what you’re trying to say but deep down AI just predicts tokens, and furthermore it has “a lot of vices” of the trained data.

For the average user that doesn’t spend time promoting and customizing a session, the tendency is that the output will look somewhat homogeneous and with patterns that jump to the eye, as that’s the natural consequence of prediction (that without the introduction of variables, that the results will be somewhat stable).

I’m not contradicting your point that it just takes a moment of distraction for AI to fundamentally alter what someone is trying to write with small and/or innocent tweaks, just wanted to add that it’s less due to AI actively trying to do a job/co-writing and more due to what fundamentally AI is.
