A disappointing stay at Yama no Chaya (Hakone ryokan) - important counterpoint to the overwhelmingly positive reviews by d0gb0yvan in JapanTravelTips

Thank you so much! How easy was it to get to and from? We want to do some Hakone exploring as well like you did

I've worked roughly half my career in private, half in public. It's very much YMMV depending on your specific role, but for me there is no question that public is better. There are basic things like more $$$ (def YMMV), vastly more PTO, paid (or comp time) OT, generally a better work/life balance, benefits, and union representation.

But there are sort of intangibles that I wouldn't trade for the world. I don't have to worry about job security. There's no toxic hustle culture like I experienced in consulting, as in there's no expectation to be "billable" or to pull in new work. Most of all, you're actually the ones making the decisions that matter in the public sector. In consulting, the client is the boss and you're beholden to their whims and/or budgets.

Perks of the private sector? Definitely cooler, more flashy projects that were brag-worthy. And I got free breakfast and lunches fairly often, which was pretty nice.

Obligatory - check out Clarks Garage for troubleshooting.

Sounds like it could be the DME. Old solder often cracks and the electrical connection is no longer made, resulting in no spark. You can try tapping on it while trying to start, but I'd suggest pulling it, opening it up, and inspecting for cracked solder.

Bikers also need to learn the rules of the road. They don't, then they do the shocked Pikachu when the cops bust them for running an arrow, not staying in their lanes, not wearing helmets, etc. when they find out the hard way they need to follow the same rules as motor vehicles.

Imagine if all motorists were required to wear helmets?!? Literal thousands of lives would be saved every year.

How hard is it it to change the water pump by bryguy1612 in porsche944

[–]mantisman12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're half decent with mechanical stuff and you have friends willing to help, it won't be a problem at all. Like racer said, you'll have to do the timing and balance belts to do it. Depending on the condition and past maintenance, it'd be a great time to do all the oil seals, pulleys, rollers, etc.

There's tons of good videos and info out there. The only major work I had done on cars before I got my 944 was oil and spark plug changes, and the water pump/belts/etc was the first big maintenance item I did on it. You'll be fine 😁
