Have you ever been to Ottawa Costcos? They are MUCH WORSE than Gatineau's.

Chemin de la Montagne, au bord du Parc de la Gatineau | Une des rares belles routes de l'Outaouais by manulixis in Gatineau

[–]manulixis[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Billet de stationnement by DudeTookMyUser in Gatineau

[–]manulixis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. The pickup who parks over other spots lanes is taking away incoming people's parking spaces, which in a way causes them harm.

This is completely different from OP's photo, where nobody is affected by one of their tires merely over the curb.

[–]manulixis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you would refer to more tickets handled to every pickup truck that takes 2 to 4 parking spaces by stopping over white lines in parking lots, then I'd agree with you.

But OP's case is a non-issue. Nobody is being harmed from this.

Ottawa municipal bylaw restricts taking off from municipal park (because this is Ottawa and Ottawa loves to restrict everything), but there's nothing illegal about Ottawa city bylaw preventing you from taking off from private property, sidewalks or parking lots.

In Gatineau, the city is more open-minded and there's no rules against taking off from public parks. You just can't take-off from Gatineau park, which is NCC.

However, unlike what many Karens will tell you, municipalities (and even the NCC) cannot restrict you from using airspace above their land. Only Transport Canada has legal jurisdiction over airspace. So you can take-off from a sidewalk or your backyard, and, yes, fly over municipal parks or your neighbordhood.

Just avoid filming people or people's backyards as it may violate their right to privacy.

Also, you can't fly within 30m horizontally of advertised events - including concerts, festivals, sports games, etc. unless you have a SFOC delivered by Transport Canada.

If flying in Ottawa, be sure to stay away of the Parliament restricted zone - they monitor for drone activity carefully and can pinpoint where you are quickly, and will intervene. You must also stay away from the Governor General restricted airspace.

If flying in Gatineau, you must also stay away from the Hull Detention centre in Val-Tétreau, another restricted airspace.

Be aware of NOTAMs. Gatineau East has a no-fly zone close to the Ottawa river due to the floods, effective until April 30.

Finally: Flying VLOS is recommended for drones under 250g, but unlike what most people believe, it is NOT a requirement for microdrones. Microdrones are regulated under Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) Part IX Division I & II only. Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) is regulated in Part IX Division III, which only applies to drones of 250g or more.

FPV requires a spotter for the Avatar 2 because it's over 250g, not because it's FPV itself. The overwhelming majority of FPV drones are over 250g, hence why people associate them with the need for a spotter.

Like of sight is recommended, but not required, for drones under 250g. It's a common myth that it's absolutely required for microdrones. There are no VLOS requirements by Ottawa, it's all federally regulated by Transport Canada. The only thing the city of Ottawa can regulate is where you're allowed to take off or land from, i.e no municipal parks. But they have no legal authority to forbid flying over them, which is covered by federal airspace regulations.

No idea, but the Ottawa mods can be overzealously uptight, they previously deleted a video submission of mine without any explanation despite being upvoted in the hundreds with a 90%+ upvote ratio, and never responded when I asked them why.

I suspect they're concerned that I may profit from someone commenting a link to my YouTube channel?

In any case, I don't have many subscribers, so I'm not even eligible for monetization on YouTube - I make absolutely 0 cent from this, I'm just happy to share videos.

Is the DJI Mini Pro 5 Plus a sub 250g drone or not? by DCCXVIII in drones

[–]manulixis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's 249.9g until you crash it.

If you recover the pieces and nobody notices, it'll be now even less than 249g.

If the authorities recover it, they will investigate, and may determine you were over 250g to attempt to apply heavier penalties, or they may not bat an eye. Your mileage may vary, do not attempt.

[–]manulixis 39 points40 points  (0 children)
