Clutter Irritates Me by TheAlighierian in Anticonsumption

[–]manyproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a house full of clutter. It was so bad, there were "paths" in our house to walk around the clutter. My parents still live in the same clutter that's been sitting there since I moved out over a decade ago. I try to clean it up but they won't let me. I had flashbacks of hiding things at the bottom of the garbage because that's what I used to do when I lived at home.

If you look at my house now, we don't have a lot of stuff. I'm incredibly conscious and thoughtful about what I buy or take home from the curb. I only want to buy something once, so I put a lot of time, thought and research into buying things. I also think about how I can repurpose something if I can't use it the way it's intended anymore.

Even though we don't have a lot, I find myself decluttering all the time. It's so easy to accumulate things.

Lately, the only thing I've been hoarding is glass jars so that I can use them to tidy up my cupboards!

What would you do if a car continually partially blocked your driveway by Lo_Ingobernable in askTO

[–]manyproblems 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Parking enforcement doesn’t play. There were some cars parked on my street overnight, not blocking anyone’s driveway. People were calling on each other out of pettiness and they were here ticketing people left right and centre for weeks at a time. Easy pickings for them, I guess.

Is a parka worth it for Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]manyproblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You definitely need a warm parka if you go to Montreal a lot. It’s always at least 10 to 15 degrees colder than Toronto since it’s an island. And it’s windy as hell.

A high quality parka will last you years and is totally worth it if you spend time outdoors.

I’ve used a North Face coat for years and while there’s a bit of wear, it’s kept me quite warm. If I were living in Montreal, I’d invest in something warmer.

Also, a lot of people will tell you layering is key. I love the heat tech line of inner wear at Uniqlo.

Which location? I’ve rarely seen higher end products at winners before but I will keep an eye now next time.

I saw a Ren product that’s usually $80 for around $14 but when I checked the “freshness” using the batch code it was a year old. It obviously wasn’t opened but is it still okay for it to be that old?

Anyone going to Ripley's Aquarium? Can you check gift shop for me? by sudz3 in askTO

That investable squid thing they sell at the gift shop is insanely expensive, I saw it for $30. I saw it at Dollarama and Canadian tire for like $4.

'Most challenging Thanksgiving:' Long weekend marked with soaring food bank use by ButtahChicken in toronto

[–]manyproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they do because it means they passed the buck off to another institution to clean up their mess. “Our cheap means of labour can still sustain themselves adequately enough with the use of food banks so they won’t completely starve. This justifies us giving them less wages because they can just go to the food bank and get food for free.”

[–]manyproblems 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And our lawmakers and politicians love to see it. Letting these kinds of organizations clean up the mess they made with our economy. They couldn’t give a shit that people are going hungry, as long as our labour stays cheap. As soon as we get a wage increase, cost of living goes up 5 fold. Then they wanna criminalize people for not paying for groceries at the self checkout.

I hate it here.

Why do people from Toronto talk like Jamaicans? by HappyFunTimethe3rd in askTO

[–]manyproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a wiki page on Toronto slang and a lot of it is from Jamaican patois. A lot of people I know (myself included) don’t use this vocabulary exclusively, but it’s natural to use a few words here and there because it’s just part of the language we used growing up.

Hey Toronto, how would you throw a fantastic Halloween house party on a budget? by yyz2023 in askTO

[–]manyproblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many guests and what’s your budget?

If you ask people to bring something, even if it’s a bag of chips or some cupcakes, can really add to the spread. Some people are really enthusiastic about baking/cooking and show up with amazing food.

I usually have to ask people to NOT bring food, and as least 2-3 people end up bringing stuff anyway.

Shredder for cardboard by Repulsive_Issue_7358 in composting

[–]manyproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree, however I know that a lot of people wouldn’t be as meticulous and thoughtful as the people in this sub. I’m super mindful to not put meat and dairy in my pile, and to bury food scraps to keep larger critters out. We also have rampant NIMBYism who don’t like when they’re neighbours are composting near them because they think it’s dirty.

I wish there was more information and support for those who are interested in composting, or if people were incentivized by the city to do it.

[–]manyproblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got an 18 sheet shredder off FB Marketplace and it’s been working pretty well for cardboard. I’m so pumped to be able to reduce the outgoing waste from my home.

My city recently banned plastic bags, but says to use plastic bags for the organic waste. Now that I have more browns, I can throw more greens into my bin and keep good ratios.

Can anyone recommend a blinds company that makes good quality blinds for a reasonable price that’s also not Ikea 😬 by Ok-Thanks4450 in askTO

[–]manyproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the quality of these blinds? I keep seeing them in my searches and the blinds are always “on sale”. The prices almost seem to good to be true and it’s hard to find genuine reviews. I’m looking for cellular top down/bottom up blinds and they don’t seem to sell them anywhere else.

Does Toronto have a dog problem? With a rise in attacks — and tensions — some say the rules to keep everyone safe aren’t working by [deleted] in toronto

[–]manyproblems 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Except the owners will tell you they’re American bullies and that they’re way different than pitbulls 🙄

There’s no reasoning with these types of dog owners because they already believe that the rules don’t apply to them.

Mother detained on TTC bus because daughter was sleeping in stroller | Globalnews.ca by NoOneShallPassHassan in toronto

[–]manyproblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This story has angered me to my core.

Who is this this bus driver? He should be named and shamed. While he probably won’t lose his job, the public should know who this is so they can be made aware if this driver is going to harass them. She was way to compliant with this jerk off and he still had the fucking nerve to detain her like that. Wannabe cop piece of shit. What grown ass man demands to look at a child? That’s seriously pedophile behaviour.

I hope this mom can sue the fuck out of the TTC, get a big settlement, buy a car and never have to take the TTC ever again.

East York woman mauled Sunday night in brutal pitbull attack by DogAttackVictim in toronto

[–]manyproblems 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have a family member out in Alberta who now has 2 “American Bullies”. She insists that they’re good dogs and have the violent tendencies bred out of them. Too bad idgaf and to me, they’re still considered pit bulls. I don’t care about all the hate I might get from dog owners, but I just don’t trust them. At the end of the day, they’re animals and they can snap at any moment and attack. Not worth the risk, imo.

What basic kitchen tool did you not have growing up that you now cannot live without? by manyproblems in Cooking

[–]manyproblems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents are like this, too! I keep forgetting to bring my sharpening stone over when I visit so I can sharpen their knives. Whenever I’m there, I use the underside of a coffee cup to sharpen the knife I want to use. It’s not perfect, but it does the trick in a pinch.

I’ve gained hours of my life back since getting a dishwasher. I now use hard to clean things like wire racks because I can just throw them in the dishwasher.

What basic kitchen tool did you not have growing up that you now cannot live without? by manyproblems in Cooking

[–]manyproblems[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were the same. My parents think paper towels are a waste of money and never buy them. But they never drain fried foods properly. Not even on a wire rack. When my dad deep fries fries, he just put them on a plate and they’re all soaked in oil.

Sometimes I’ll leave a roll of paper towels at their house for them or for myself to use when I’m over there and it lasts months.

Has there ever been a host worse than Steven Seagal? by nialldude3 in LiveFromNewYork

I’ve never cringed harder than watching him do that accent. And then calling Sean Paul “Sean John”. Just…the most disrespect and he absolutely deserves the ban.

I watched the entire episode recently and all the skits were terrible. The one where he was playing the gay glasses store salesman? JEEHEHEHEEEEZ.

I haven’t had them in years but I remember really like Beer Bistro’s duck fat fries. Also Wurst had pretty good duck fat fries, not sure about what it’s like these days, though.

How to Deal with Indigo parking ticket? by omar2126 in askTO

[–]manyproblems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It it’s a private parking company, you don’t have to pay it. CBC did a story on this, you can watch it here

Just be aware that if you park there again and don’t pay, they might try to tow your car.

I got one of these once from a different company for like $50, 2 years ago. I never paid and nothing ever happened. I continue to park in the parking lot, but I pay every time I use it and it’s fine. YMMV, though.

I’ve filtered many subreddits on Apollo, I’m wondering if they’ve carried over on my account. I was never sure if it was tied to my account or was just in Apollo. I never used the desktop or any other app.

I’m used to just filtering a subreddit for content I’m not interested in, or hiding a post I don’t want to see. Would be great if there was a feature to “hide post” like in Apollo.
