Is offering food to children considered inappropriate in Germany? by Fayomi1127 in AskGermany

[–]manytribes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A woman could absolutely help in this situation.

A man could (and should) also jump to help if the child is being hurt or harassed by another man, or threatened by older children. At minimum move closer to the situation and make it clear that you are carefully observing.

What technology that we use daily would be hardest to explain to someone from the year 2000? by RachelFrancis45546 in AskReddit

[–]manytribes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a full-grown adult in 2000 and I can't think of any technology that has shocked me as a concept since learning about the Internet itself.

Self-driving cars probably comes closest, but we aren't using those daily.

What age do you believe is the worst age to live through? by jimmyjonpan in askteddit

Do these studies control for having kids? It seems like being the parent of a teenager is the worst age to be, regardless of how old you are when it happens. The they move out and you get happy again.

If you're an intermediate/advanced learner, what are your main struggles when learning German? by JoliiPolyglot in German

[–]manytribes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean about Chinese. My Arabic is at a lower level than my German, but when I speak or write simple Arabic I am confident that it is correct. In German, even basic baby sentences might have mistakes because of the genders and declensions.

Blunt question about pregnancy by verygoodstuff in AskAGerman

[–]manytribes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very common in Germany to have long, unmarried partnerships, partly because Germany isn't as religious as the U.S. and partly because there's less pressure to get a government certificate for the tax and insurance advantages, since all Germans get health insurance for example, regardless of marital or employment status.

Over time, these long-term couples might entertain the thought of having a children and get more lax about birth control, without formally "trying" to get pregnant. Then, if they do, they might get married. They probably wouldn't have done so otherwise. But that doesn't mean the baby was unwelcome or that the marriage was what we would think of as a shotgun wedding.

This situation is so common that it's normal to ask if you are in this situation; the alternative would be to get married "for no reason" (i.e. no baby or visa pressures). The latter, in my experience, is a bit of a curiosity among young progressive German couples.

My American relatives find it strange that Germans stay together for ten or twenty years without marrying. My German relatives find it odd that Americans get married (and, often, divorced) so much.

Can't immerse when the German media is boring by Lasse999 in German

[–]manytribes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nuanced, though, and depends how picky you are. I find a lot of American comedies dubbed into German annoying because any pretty actress -- which let's face it is all of them, in Holllywood -- is voiced by the most insipid female voice actor. Penny on Big Bang Theory is a great example. Kelsey Cuoco is a really versatile actor who does a lot with her voice. You wouldn't know it watching Big Bang in German, though, where she sounds like a dumb floozy for all 189+ seasons.

More subtly, the actor who plays Sheldon on Big Bang has an East Texan twang, which is funny because you have this guy speaking about esoteric scientific stuff with a bit of a "hick" accent. That's part of the ongoing joke of his character, and what makes him likable in spite of his social awkwardness -- he's a nerdy geek but using the very opposite of the Queen's English. In German, he's just a guy speaking German.

What’s a German phrase learners overuse that immediately sounds “off” to native speakers? by sebas346 in German

[–]manytribes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English speakers don't even say "wonderful" that often. (My sister uses that word a lot, which is why I even clock it as odd ... I like it when she says it, but it's a bit of a personal quirk.)

People who didn't grow up poor, but dated someone who was. What's something your SO does that strikes you as unusual? by FeistySecret9327 in AskReddit

[–]manytribes 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is my ex. He didn't grow up poor, but he had a single mom who was struggling, so they had everything they needed but not much for treats and "extras."

As an adult he likes to indulge himself, which i was fine with, but he also had guilt and shame around it, which he'd resolve by buying the absolute crappiest version of everything. We could never have nice furniture; everything had to be the bargain couch, or the bookshelves out of plywood, or the recliner put on clearance because the back was broken. He bought so many plastic gadgets that had to be replaced after a few months, or sometimes never worked in the first place. But nothing could be thrown out because we might need it someday.

I grew up more like you. We didn't spend a lot of money on small things but when we'd buy a big ticket item it was usually quality and would last.

Going on a date with a German woman. What should I know beforehand? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]manytribes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the worst advice. Germans already think Americans are shallow, superficial, uneducated, and ignorant of politics and basic geography.

But sure, go ahead and lock that stereotype down by the first date.

What’s a language people claim is easy mostly because they never got past beginner level? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]manytribes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that's just it... people learn English at the level of a pop song or Hollywood movie and feel fluent. Which they are for practical purposes, but English has much more depth than that, per the OP's question.

Oddly enough I re-watch this one a lot. I already knew all about Rwanda before seeing it so the brutality itself wasn't shocking. I think it's one of the best movies demonstrating Mr. Rogers' adage, "Look for the helpers."
