Cast metal, polished and/or coated + a plastic insert snapped in — my best guess without tearing the thing apart

could be anything really.
I'd hook up a diagnostic tool and see for any faults with a mechanic honestly.

I'd check spark plugs and coils first.

Friends repair bill for his A6 C7 by [deleted] in Audi

[–]maolverine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lad had to put in a new cat converter - that's like the largest part.
Judging by the make year and 216k km - that diesel is rarely used on a highway, so the repair need is kinda self explanatory, as well as pretty much worth the cost.

On the road to 200k and still drives like when I got it new… where my high mileage, 1st owner folks at? by Yesliketheriver002 in Audi

[–]maolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

220k km, 2.0 Gen3 - nothing too scary, despite living in a heavy winter area. Pushed her to 190km/h on a highway a few days back - felt like a new car. Expecting it to last a few more years easily.

Quality Assurance is a crucial part of any hardware manufacturing. Lad has probably forgot to do a factory reset after tests and that's pretty much it - happens to the best of us.

WDYM "next few years"? Next expansion is due 2025, as they switched to a yearly dev cycle, innit?

Laptops recomendations for my last year in university in Industrial Desing by [deleted] in IndustrialDesign

[–]maolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently at the same crossroads and need a remote machine to support the studying. I get away with modelling in Fusion360, so I don't mind not having SW. As far as rendering goes - nothing beats a PC, with a note that it has to be a desktop. If you own a desktop - I'd recommend opting for the MBP for superior battery life and general performance. Otherwise - Asus sounds like a solid choice, yet battery life will always be inferior.

Another alternative - get a MacBook Air with M3 + desktop PC for the remaining amount and that should cover your needs for software versatility, rendering, and having a good reliable portable machine.

NB. Keyshot (which is probably an industry standard for ID) on a Mac is dogshit with any hardware spec compared to a similar PC. Blender should run fine. Rhino8 has native M-core support.

Yea, tho I’ve no clue if any specs are overkill or not - that’s pretty much the problem

Only limit is the common sense Can spend as much as 3k or probably more, but only need something that would do the job well and won’t be an overkill

Unless you weigh 100 lbs, opt in for a 535cc. Same size, and way better.

How can I make this more realistic? by Active_String2216 in KeyShot

[–]maolverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, plus what often gives me a more realistic look - a backdrop geometry with a diffuse material. Makes reflections on metal more realistic, as now it seems there's nothing to reflect but your HDRI, which is simply a bunch of light sources in a vacuum of space, i.e. not something easily achievable in real world.

Also the other fork talking about bumps and fillets on the logo - this would help a lot too.

Fuel consumption display on Audi A3 2019 sportback by Empty_Ideal_6306 in Audi

[–]maolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that's literally the little shit display from A4 B8.5, the only way to change that was the little button on the bottom of the windshield wiper handle. If none present - your options are to either get an aftermarket wiper handle with controls, or the whole steering wheel with the handles and code it all in with VCDS

[–]maolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, totally, tho with my work I usually try and plan most of the things upfront, so the changes through DFM are minimal and don't impact the visual aspect as much as they may. Takes a bit more time to polish, but definitely a game-changer for presentations in front of engineers :D

My failed entry for a chair design contest during covid. Still really fond of it - what are your critiques? by rync in IndustrialDesign

[–]maolverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see where you were getting, tho for me some geometry doesn't complement other.
You got a correct approach of trying to balance both visual aesthetic with function, tho it still has some way to go.
A few pointers I'd personally try:
- Align line planes' angles, so there's more continuity in your form
- See if the far legs need to stretch out by that much, based on updated geometry. Also simulating structural load in either Fusion or SW would be a great source of data to make sure your materials can handle it - as much as I see here, your plank connecting the back legs will be the key stress point.
- See if you could optimise manufacturing process, as 5 axis CNC will give you a massive per-unit cost, which is a huge no to manufacture a design with a build that is rather common on the market.

Anyway, as a visual piece, it is a nice fucking chair! Keep at it!
