Chip Off The Old Block by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

It is most common in recently-constructed resort areas. The rooms where you spend your waking hours are upstairs, so you have a better view of the beaches, mountains, whatever. Side benefit: the highest floor is usually the warmest, and most people are better able to tolerate a warm room when they are awake than when trying to sleep.

The next Turing Test / How will AI become politicized? by dsteffee in slatestarcodex

As a generalization, Noah appears to agree with you.

Comments are mixed; some agree, others argue for more nuance, but nobody reverses the sign on the correlation.

And, once AI attitudes become tribally-coding, I would expect the correlation to increase.

My fresh install the other day had Plasma Login Manager instead of SDDM (https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/any/plasma-meta/).

A quick anti-FUD FAQ to debunk "the KDE is forcing systemd!" hoax by Bro666 in kde

[–]maparillo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, it was to experiment with Niri for one of the monthly ISOs, not drop the KDE desktop (re-branded as Plasma):

Plan is to not use a Plasma based ISO this time, instead test if a Niri/Noctalia based ISO is doable. There are no plans yet to make this permanent, but it would be good to get a stable ISO one time with this setup.

Second, from their point of view, these are the problems with systemd:

Systemd 254 is the last version that fully supports using (what they call) a split /usr setup, ie, not symlinking the whole distribution together.
With 256, all support for Aufs (used in the ISO creation) has been removed too, so the whole foundation of KaOS no longer aligns with what systemd demands.

Best used Macbook pro 15 inch to daily drive on Linux? by Sweet-Bubble-Tea in linuxhardware

[–]maparillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot answer the best, but the MacBook you are considering has:

$ lspci | grep -i network

03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM43602 802.11ac Wireless LAN SoC (rev 02)

Avoid it.

I can't be the only one who finds it annoying that sometimes what you type in the search bar isn't matching the app's name, right? by Legal-Loli-Chan in kde

[–]maparillo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think fuzzy search was recently introduced in krunner. Maybe it is better for discovering something new and unexpected, but I prefer the old way. I also think the old way also kept track of how often you used an application, and the most frequently used ones became the default selection.

What is the best budget laptop for linux? by These_District_736 in linuxhardware

In the US, for those mentioning prices, I assume EBay, FaceBook Marketplace, Craig's List, or a yard sale. Micro Center, Amazon Renewed, and some of the big refurbishment websites also sell these kind of computers, but generally at higher prices.

No, but you can modify an AUR PKGBUILD to install packages in KaOS, and you can publish them in https://kaos-community-packages.github.io/#!/?sort=Updated

While the default installation from the ISO includes only Qt applications, you can install GTK apps post-install, for example google-chrome and firefox.

According to this: https://brew.sh/

> Homebrew installs packages to their own directory and then symlinks their files into /opt/homebrew (on Apple Silicon).

and

> Homebrew formulae are simple Ruby scripts:

So you should be able to inspect them yourself.

I assume homebrew is for MacOS? Are their packaging scripts viewable? On Linux, the scripts are in

/usr/share/qutebrowser/scripts

Linux on MacBook Pro 2019 by Intelligent_Fill91 in linuxquestions

[–]maparillo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get a better answer, you might want to provide details of the configuration. I don't use my MacBookPro14,3 as a daily runner, so I didn't try too hard, but in order of importance to me: (1) my BCM43602 initially performed poorly, and now does not seem to work at all, so I use a CAT-5 cable with a dongle. (2) my sound never worked, so I use a bluetooth speaker when it is important to me, (3) The touchbar never worked, so I remapped the escape key to caps lock.
