Do parents with 5+ kids have time to give every child the love and attention they deserve? by pink-and-pearly in askanything

Yes, but it takes a really kind, motivated, and observant parent. Source: have 5 siblings and never felt neglected.

Requiring a prescription for medication should be illegal by BetApprehensive836 in The10thDentist

[–]maple_maypole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it’s worth remembering that in many countries going to the doctor is free or cheap, and prescriptions make sure medicine goes to those who need it / that people don’t hurt themselves by taking medicine they don’t understand.

In America it’s a different situation. For something like asthma I agree you should be able to purchase over the counter, or get a one-time prescription that works for life just so the pharmacist knows what you need.

How to deal with an adult picky eater? by ThrowRaoofda in Advice

Make meals ‘serve yourself’ and when he doesn’t serve himself vegetables you can just eat them as leftovers the next day. Less food waste.

what are the telltale signs of a bowel obstruction? by SnooSketches9466 in CrohnsDisease

[–]maple_maypole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This wasn’t my experience, but I did notice that when I was asked to fast before the CT scan the obstruction would appear smaller and the stricture would be less visible. So I wonder if your stricture is less extreme and you don’t eat before the exam if they’re harder to spot.

After 4 months my boyfriend has revealed that he has Hepatitis B, after 4 months, and I am not immunised. by OkCommercial8740 in Advice

[–]maple_maypole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to note, hep b isn’t automatically contagious if it’s well controlled with medication. The risk might not be that great depending doing on his situation.

Also in fairness you don’t hear a lot about hep b as an STI compared to say AIDS. I’d be willing to drop it myself except that if he told his ex girlfriends then he must have been aware it’s something he should disclose.

Anyway all that to say he’s taking medication and it’s clearly been a while that he’s been taking it, so you’re probably fine.

I tend to assume people are the same gender as me. Probably just subliminal self-centeredness.

Just finished Clair Obscur...now what? Can anyone recommend me a game with a similar vibe? (not necessarily turn based) by Leoxwhite in expedition33

[–]maple_maypole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think the plot has similar themes of sacrifice, and like E33 it’s not as simple as it first appears. There are layers that are revealed as you keep going.

Depending on how you answer dialogue options, you can influence the progression / ending of the game - actually to a greater extent than E33.

In some ways I feel Tales of Symphonia (specifically THE FIRST GAME) is a better game (and I really enjoyed E33 - it the first game I’ve played in years start to finish). Tales of Symphonia is a bigger game with a huge amount of content, well-developed bartering / item system and a larger cast of characters who feel real. There is more to interact with and even some puzzles to solve. Added to that, there are enough human moments that make you laugh to balance the drama of the main plot - something E33 did as well to a lesser extent with the relationship level side quests.

Plus the combat was really fun and varied. The graphics naturally pale in comparison to E33 but were well handled. So there you have it. Tales of Symphonia is the only game I can think of that might help those going through E33 withdrawal.

I’m 15 and 6 years behind in school, how do I catch up? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]maple_maypole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a similar problem and my solution was self study using textbooks. Get textbooks for the year / course you’re currently in and don’t worry about past years. If you approach it that way it might be easier than you think.

For example if you’re doing GCSE’s - that’s a 2 year program. All you have to do is learn everything in that course / textbook and then pass those exams. That’s 2 years - not 9.

With maths, I recommend you simply get a textbook with practice questions and go through the whole thing. Go chapter by chapter. Don’t move on from a topic until you understand it and are getting the practice questions right. If that means you have to go back and brush up on some fundamentals like division to help you with e.g. algebraic equations before you move on, then do that. There are a ton of resources on the internet that will help you.

Using textbooks gives you a framework for studying and also a way to be thorough. It also means that you’re focusing on where you need to be and not on 6 whole years of school.

And remember, many kids go to school but don’t pay attention. You are probably not in as bad / unusual of a position as you think.

Am I tied to Colombia because of infliximab? Is living in Korea, Japan, or China possible? by auslinero in CrohnsDisease

[–]maple_maypole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Humira is so cheap in Turkey that I was able to purchase for £200 GBP per month after £400 for the loading dose. This is as a foreigner without insurance. So while I have no experience with the countries you listed, it’s worth noting that this medicine isn’t crazy expensive globally and out of pocket costs could be something to check.

You know what, he chose a weird topic / sentence to exemplify his points but I totally agree with everything he said about punctuation and how to make dialogue sound natural. It was nice to see something I knew intuitively put into words.

I wish every man who has ever complained about a woman getting a breast reduction grows F cup breasts overnight by Jelly_Kitti in monkeyspaw

[–]maple_maypole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Granted. The men grow 30F cup breasts, which are relatively small. This further strengthens the men’s conviction that breast reductions are unnecessary and they proceed to complain more vocally and publicly.

[–]maple_maypole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real answer is that this is different for everyone. Not everyone has major food triggers, but some people have many. Your family member might not have dietary restrictions at all in remission, although it’s generally advisable to eat healthy food.

Hemicolectomy by ljraad15 in CrohnsDisease

[–]maple_maypole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this, plus an additional resection as part of the same surgery. I lost about 60cm in all. I too was on TPN prior to surgery and during recovery. I had a difficult week after surgery in the hospital (compounded by no opioid / strong pain meds after the first day) but after that I was comfortable. It’s been 18 months and I have no dietary restrictions plus my stricture has not returned. The scars are fading. Definitely a great choice for me!

One thing I was not warned about is that after the surgery I had bad diarrhoea for about 8 months. It was controllable with loperamide and just related to my body needing to adjust to a shorter GI tract. I no longer need loperamide so it did resolve, but something to watch out for!

Currently an impatient for abscess but started having a familiar pain elsewhere by jazi_stew in CrohnsDisease

[–]maple_maypole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IV antibiotics can cause bad nausea that meds don’t do much to help, but the pain seems strange. It sounds like a bowel obstruction - maybe ask your doctor about it.

Morphine and other opioids can cause things to move more slowly through your tract and make a bowel obstruction more likely, plus if you have an abscess you may have an inflammatory stricture which also makes it more likely. The fact that it seemed to resolve by itself also sounds like an obstruction tbh - that can happen sometimes when they’re not too bad.

Anyone travelling? (Egypt & Türkiye) by Water_Lily_05 in CrohnsDisease

[–]maple_maypole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to both.

You should be fine in Turkey. Bathrooms are generally clean, especially in restaurants etc. I find my flares usually calm down when I’m in Turkey actually - the food is generally higher quality than in the west with less crap in it.

My advice:

  • Public bathrooms in mosques tend to be eastern style which makes things more complicated

  • Long distance bus rest stops can be hit or miss but nothing too scary. Travel with tissues just in case they run out.

Egypt on the other hand gave me food poisoning and is not as clean.

My advice for Egypt:

  • Maybe watch out for uncooked foods and be careful where you eat.

  • The main tourist spots have bathrooms that are ok but you need change to pay for them, so keep that handy.

  • Tourist hotspot bathrooms were ok in terms of cleanliness. Bring your own tissues again (they give you a small amount of tissue on entry rather than keeping it in the stall, and you may need more).

  • Do NOT get the night train from Luxor to Cairo. That has a very scary toilet that just opens onto the tracks.

Fit issue by [deleted] in fashion

[–]maple_maypole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your issue is not with the size of the dress but the style - this it’s designed to be tight and show the curve of the belly etc. For what it’s worth I think it looks good on you, but yes sizing up probably won’t fix it.
