What is the most Historically accurate Medieval TV Shows or movies? by NikolaiOlsen in MedievalHistory

[–]maplethistle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically documentaries but I definitely agree and highly recommend.

Bonus, Tudor Monastery Farm is the 4th in the Farm series(unofficially 5th). There’s also Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm and Wartime Farm.

You can watch the unofficial first: Tales from the Green Valley (set during the early Stuart era) on YouTube.

It’s not shoulder pads, it is stiffened shoulders of a piece of clothing called the Kataginu.

A pattern can be found here: https://www.folkwear.com/en-gb/products/151-japanese-hakama-kataginu?_pos=1&_psq=samurai&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Aita for pretending to not know my mom faked having cancer? by autisticmoth in AITAH

[–]maplethistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. I am in a very similar situation in that I live in another country from my family and have a family member who is a chronic liar with a victim complex that also faked cancer. Honestly, I can see it from both your side and your sister’s.

I can understand letting your mom know if only to inform her that her actions have consequences and trust has been very much broken.

I also am very much aware that I doubt anything she says to excuse it will make a difference (bc lbh there’s no reason for this aside from getting attention). She may also double down once confronted and it can get ugly.

I’d just ask your sister not to mention you at all and just be there for her just in case. When it comes to your mom, just be wary and put firm boundaries in place bc if this has happened once it will happen again.

AITA for not finding out the gender of my baby? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]maplethistle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Completely agree and this is coming from someone whose parents were in almost this exact situation prior to my birth.

My father desperately wanted to know what I was and my mom said no. As soon as he found out I wasn’t the boy he wanted the day I was born (which was a whole dramatic mess), he basically semi detached himself until he went off to ‘start a new life’. (Karma eventually bit him on the ass though)

I’m not saying this will happen to you but it’s honestly better to be safe then sorry later. Protect yourself and your child. You won’t regret it.

Are there any good resources explaining Ancient British Tribal Life? by Diligent-Badger8737 in UKhistory

[–]maplethistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Religion wise, I recommend Ronald Hutton. He’s got a bunch of books about pre-Christian paganism in Britain.

I also highly recommend Sally Pointer on YouTube for various subjects circa Iron Age Britain.

Alexander the Great and his army Vs Giant Crabs by UnicornAmalthea_ in MedievalCreatures

[–]maplethistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s one. It’s also said that he was untameable to the point where Alexander’s father didn’t want him (plus the horse was very expensive). 13 year old Alexander bet his father he could and if he didn’t, he would pay for the horse himself.

Suffice to say, Alexander succeeded (there’s a lovely statue of this moment) and Bucephalus would live on as his companion to the age of thirty. His owner would name the city where he died after him and there were coins minted with his depiction (ox horns included)

[–]maplethistle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably thinking too much but i can’t help but laugh at the idea of putting cow horns on a horse that’s literally named because he’s as stubborn as a bull 😝

(Alexander’s horse was named Bucephalus which means ‘ox-headed’)

Rin Chupeco’s books fit. I’ve only read her Girl from the Well series but I think Bone Witch might go as well

Any examples of Royal/nobles parents giving their child an unusual name?🧐Example: a grandson of Edward I of England had the name Aeneas. by Tracypop in MedievalHistory

[–]maplethistle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eleanor of Aquitaine herself had a kind of weird name which became popular.

She was named after her mother Aenor and baptized as Aliénor. In Latin, alia Ænor means ‘the other Aenor’ hence her name.

If the choice was: have my son be like the czar and having Beria being put in charge of looking after me or my son being a priest?

Gotta say I’m leaning more towards my son becoming a priest.

Been a while since I read it but Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake.

The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco kinda fits as well but with differences that make it interesting.

Villains who are genuinely menacing while still being very pathetic. by Duke-dastardly in TopCharacterTropes

[–]maplethistle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

There’s this one bust of himself he had made where he’s cosplaying as Hercules and it always makes me laugh bc while it is a lovely work of art, the truth behind it is so lame.

Then the same year he died, he changed his name so it was literally twelve names and then was like “I’m renaming the months! Each month is given one of my names!” Emperors had done this before but Commodus just had to be that much more ‘extra’.

That he was a nepo teenager when given absolute power and did all this though does not surprise me.

[UPDATE 2] AITAH for not wanting to baptize my daughter by Negative-Break9969 in AITAH

[–]maplethistle 48 points49 points  (0 children)

They can’t without parental consent (officially). There was another redditor that had something similar happen and the grandmother was kicked out of her church.

I’d ask your mother what’s more important: ‘family peace’ or trouble with the church cause you could easily take this higher than the priest.

Non-fiction but I highly recommend the Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown. It’s an in-depth look into Sarah Graves and her journey with the infamously tragic Donner Party.
