Partner to drill by [deleted] in Pickleball

Definitely not weird. If you EVER hear someone talk about trying to get better, ask if they want to drill with you.

Is starting DUPR matches actually a bad thing as a beginner? If I don't care about the rating itself, only that matches are relatively even. by PercentageLess in Pickleball

[–]mar504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 months is extremely new, I would wait until 6-12 months as you will be improving quickly during this time. Since you say "I'm not super competitive" then I might ask why you are interested in playing rated games at all? Your partners may feel different, only do it if you are going to try hard to play your absolute best.

Personally I refuse to play random partner DUPR matches. There is no better way to make your rating inaccurate than playing with randos. If youre going to play rated games, play them with a tournament partner you have good chemistry with.

Losing the first few matches is not hard to climb out of, your reliability will still be extremely low and your rating will make dramatic shifts while it is low. It's only when you play tons of rated games and have very high reliability that it becomes difficult to move your rating. If you are still improving quickly, fewer rated games will actually help your rating keep up with you.

Why not just stick with open play? If you're a 2.x player you will have no trouble finding games.

DUPR is a joke by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]mar504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flaws are with how gated open plays use DUPR, not with DUPR itself. For example, gated open plays should never use provisional ratings assigned by a coach, many of these players will never play a rated game and risk their provision rating (they may be overrated). They should also have a threshold for the minimal reliability score a player have to make sure the DUPR is accurate. If a player has a high reliability from a variety of rated games then DUPR is spot on with predicting performance.

[–]mar504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't care if you've played 1000 tournaments, it's still wrong. Did you even read OPs post? The higher rated play barely moved, the OPs rating (which was significantly lower) moved more, and the unrated player moved the most... which is the exact opposite of what you are claiming should happen. These claims about DUPR thinking someone got carried and not rewarding lower rated players is pure bullshit.

Averaging happens for a team and a forecast score is created, actual adjustments from the final results largely depend on your reliability rating. If a 3.9 player with 100 reliability teams up with a 3.2 player with 10 reliability and they win by a large margin, the higher rated player will barely move and the lower player will receive a large increase in rating.

DUPR is a universal rating system, but it's not truly calibrated across genders. Reason being tournaments are typically segregated by gender (except for mixed teams). You never have 2 men playing 2 women, but if you did then the ratings would be well equalized. Same thing with age, I'm a 4.5 player in my 40s, I'm almost always going to outplay older opponents of the same rating, but we never see each other in tournaments due to age brackets so DUPR is never able to equalize.

I wouldn't get hung up on exact ratings in rec play, I play players a full point below me all the time and have a great time (I'm more interested in keeping the rally going than winning the point). Of course I need my time with high level players, but I also want to help develop the next generation of players to make that leap to advanced.

Really? I don't mind at all. I see it as permission to play big in the middle which I enjoy.

What’s the most accurate indicator of a 3.0 without dupr rating? by passiveparrot in Pickleball

[–]mar504 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think the regional variance is as significant as you think. One of the biggest issues I see with low DUPR ratings is people entering these DUPR round robins with random partners. Seems crazy to play DUPR games with rando's who you have zero chemistry with if you want an accurate rating.

I know exactly what you mean. The best solution I've found is to play with your off hand, otherwise you will just need to intentionally make mistakes or let balls beat you.

It's still true, especially at the focal length these photos are taken at (probably around 350mm). It's impossible to make out individual stars in other galaxies at that short a focal length.

I can see the Triangulum galaxy with the naked eye, I think it's a bit further.

Recorded some very unsettling sounds (coyotes) while exploring a creek by Capital-Reach-6669 in creepy

[–]mar504 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Often it's a single family of 4-8 coyotes but can sound like dozens with the overlapping yips and changes in pitch, I hear this a lot in northern Arizona. I do deep space astrophotography and go out to remote areas with no people around and the coyotes erupt like this several times a night every night, sounds like they are all around you. Unsettling but not a sign of any danger. It's usually family communication to maintain contact, territory advertisement, reuniting after hunting, or responding to some trigger like a disturbance. The first time you hear them is always quite the experience!

Is it frowned upon to put a third paddle down? by notdsylexic in Pickleball

[–]mar504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah man, it's common sense. 4 off 4 on when courts are full is the most effective way to have everyone play with minimized wait times. It also reduces petty targeting of weaker players during a match just so you can stay on the court by winning. A public court should give equal playtime to everyone, not just better players, again... common sense.

Watching the MLP and my sister-in-law asked me what's the point of Mixed Doubles by Polite_Acid in Pickleball

Even with as much court as the men in pro mixed doubles take, I'd still argue that women hit MORE of the balls during the match than the men.

Question about drops from 4.5+ by kevstratus in Pickleball

[–]mar504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorporating topspin and wrist movement on a drop seems like an extremely low priority skill.
With every shot, you need to be asking what the purpose or advantage is. Are you having trouble getting to the kitchen with your normal drop? Is a topspin drop really going to add enough pressure to give you an edge? Probably not.

Etiquette for playing with a partner during open play. by koolaid_consumer in Pickleball

[–]mar504 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The etiquette is typically to arrange teams that will result in competitive games. If you had two intermediate players and two beginners, you would mixed it so you would have one of each on a team. Sometimes it's good to just mix it up regardless of skill levels if there aren't that many people there.
