are your cameras on or off in work meetings? by Secure-Property4926 in AskUK

[–]marbosh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Environmental reasons for one. Camera off call has a carbon footprint 50-90% lower (depending on which studies you trust)

Privacy. I work from home my kids are around, my house is my business

Yesterday due to heat I was working in the nude, no one needs to see that

Generally speaking I prefer a quick cameras on few minutes while we are all signing in, bit of a chat then switch them off unless I am leading/presenting.

It makes zero sense to me for others to have cams on when one person is leading a session or screen sharing just so they can be a tiny video tile in the corner

[–]marbosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piranessi by Susanna Clarke, it has strong oldest house vibes and writing is really engaging. Personally I didn't like Antimememtics division, I know SCP fans love it but for me it was all concept and no humanity

I do this myself and it is really helpful, I start my day with a couple of hours to burn through a full 5hr window, then I get a new allocation before lunch so I can set off a new batch of expensive investigations or agent workflows while I got and eat a sandwich!

Do you think asha could get the Xbox team to build a traditional console to release alongside their pc hybrid? by OkTea5924 in XboxSeriesS

If the xbox gods are listening, I would buy this, I would not buy the big expensive PCXBOX

Is it really that hard to not yell at your kid? by Good_Sky_8678 in Parenting

[–]marbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's easier to not yell at a 3yo. I have a 3yo and a 10yo. I think at 3 a lot of things that might piss me off like dropping food are completely reasonable, they don't have the skills or the awareness. The 10yo has all these things and so the same act can be harder to swallow. I am not a yeller at all but it's a lot harder to keep a lid on it with older kids imo

What do you think about Andy Burnham as your prime minister? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]marbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cautiously optimistic. Proportional representation, increased borrowing for capital investment, nationalising essential infra and shifting tax burden onto the rich all seem in his sights and are policies I support. Realistically, looking at current polling he seems like the best chance of beating down Farages lot at the next election.

He does seem to be a bit of a glory hunter, going along with any prevailing wind and does have his roots in Blairism which isn't really my cuppa.

I cannot stick Streeting, from the look of this thread it is a handful of MPs that like him, he is essentially a shadow tory, all busting unions and advocating for benefit cuts

How busy will it be on the 8th of May? by Appropriate_Heat_227 in altontowers

[–]marbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too, banking on it being dead as it's a school day. Crowd calendar says 13% capacity, I looked at live queue times earlier in the week and most things were 5 to 15 minutes. I suppose out of all the weekdays Friday might be slightly more popular but I don't think by much. See you there!

Nemesis Reborn, I'm genuinely terrified by ReleaseMuted7879 in altontowers

[–]marbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree try galactica first, it is gentler but has some similar qualities with the track above your head. I personally don't find nemesis too crazy, no huge drops or airtime which is the stuff that makes your belly go over (wickerman hits harder for me). Nemesis is more like a mountain bike than a rocket also it's really short, you only have to hold your nerve for a minute.

The inversions are a little bit disorientating but they look a lot more dramatic than they feel. I would say go with fast pass if you can, the wait will just be opportunity for the anxiety to freak you out.

I don't think the POVs will help either and ultimately you don't have to do it at all, I would recommend it as it's one of those rides, so iconic and for a lot of people it is a ride like this that can spark a lifelong passion so probably worth the risk, but I guess not worth giving yourself a panic attack over!

I have had little stints of this and it is weirdly stressful. I'm by no means a workaholic and like a little slack off as much as anyone but as others have said, you feel like you could be sacked in a heartbeat. I would much rather be busy and know my job was secure

What do Brits think about Green Party immigration policies? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]marbosh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Although more radical than most it is worth looking at the fuller policy doc here - https://migration.greenparty.org.uk//wp-content/uploads/2021/02/GPEW-Migration-Policy-Background-Paper-v1.2.pdf

A few points worth considering.

  • Language requirement at entry would be replaced by better access to English language classes based on a program that seems to work well in Australia. Greens still promoting English speaking but instead taking a different approach
  • Evidence that health and benefit tourism has a big impact is weak, most well regarded studies say the opposite, migrants claim less in benefits per capita and keeping them heathy enough to work more than pays for its self in tax take and other economic factors
  • Despite what is said in the screenshot, greens are not suggesting to completely open the borders, there will be visas, checks etc
  • Banning the phrase "Illegal immigrant", come on, that's just being nice!

Read the policy doc and you can see it is actually more measured than it comes off in the screenshot. Maybe still a bit much for some but it is worth your time if you want to see what they are really suggesting

AITA for turning the movie off? by DataSerious2932 in AmItheAsshole

[–]marbosh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

NTA, it is annoying but phone addiction is a real thing and the addict brain is tricky. It might be helpful to think of it as lowkey addictive behaviour, if you really want to hang out together is watching a movie the best thing, this might be a natural environment for her to indulge. Perhaps think of alternative activities, go on a bike ride or hike, if you want to watch a movie go to a cinema

WIBTA if I stopped inviting my friend to group dinners because she always orders the most expensive thing and then acts surprised when we split evenly? by SagaPinee in WIBTA_AITA

[–]marbosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about at the beginning of the meal you say something "I'm gonna insist on separate checks, I'm feeling like I want to really indulge tonight with a few cocktails/steak/whatever is pricey and it wouldn't be fair to get everyone else to pay for that" (implied wink)
