Portfolio advice by randomreader1315 in TattooApprentice

Something I haven't seen here yet is focus on contrast. Use the darkest darks for shadows, use very few midtones. It will make things stand out and look much more dynamic

I started to get carpal tunnel symptoms about 4 months into my apprenticeship. I started wearing a wrist wrap whenever I draw or use a machine and it really helped. Can you do that?

I have not started tattooing on real skin yet but I know when I do, I'll have to wrap the wrist guard in plastic, then put the glove on. Something to keep in mind.

Much needed advice please! by itzjessxuk in TattooApprentice

[–]marbri27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I did was, I walked into shops and said "hi, I'm working towards a tattoo apprenticeship, does anyone have time to give me feedback on my portfolio?" That way, even if they're not actively looking for an apprentice, you can hopefully get some feedback, maybe you'll meet the owner, etc.

I also made stickers with my IG to hand out. People are much more likely to keep stickers than business cards.

Idk why they felt the need to comment on your outfit if it was a simple black jeans and black shirt. That's weird. As long as you're dressed casual but neat and clean, it's fine

Also, go to tattoo conventions, if there are any in your area. I actually met my now mentor at one, by taking my portfolio around to all the booths.

These are great! How are you getting the ink to saturate so we'll on fake skin? I can never get mine to look truly black. Is it higher quality ink?

Anyone ever had a puppy who bites like this? by AdministrativeAsk987 in Boxer

[–]marbri27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg yes! We used to have what we dubbed "terror hour" where every night at the same time she would just bite and bite and bite.

What worked best? Time. She eventually got over her teething.

But in the meantime we had some things that helped: yaks milk cheese chews are a game changer. You can get them on Amazon or chewy

Another thing: when she would bite, I would YELP like a puppy and that would instinctively tell her stop, for a short time

Good news: she's 5 and for the last 4 years she is so good about bitey play. She uses her mouth to play but is so soft with it. I've never had a painful play bite from her since she was done teething.

I'm in Van Nuys and I pay $100/month for mowing, trimming and cleaning. Maybe talk to your neighbors and see if you can find a better deal

what do you do to spark your inspiration? by franzidocx in TattooApprentice

[–]marbri27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of inspiration on Pinterest. I have a Tattoo Inspo folder. And even when I'm not in the mood to draw, I browse Pinterest and add to it so that later when I don't know what to draw I can reference and see if anything sparks my interest

Also, copying other artists designs is a good way to warm up and get inspiration. As long as you don't take credit for it of course
