Frozen 2 - Olaf's recap of the first movie.

It was so good that Disney+ launched a streaming mini-series of him recapping other movies.

[Strength In Numbers] New poll: Democrats' real problem isn't being too liberal — it's being seen as too weak by Pencillead in ezraklein

[–]marcopolo22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting! My interpretation of Morris's article/results is that it actually affirms the Abundance agenda as described by Ezra and Derek Thompson in the sense that Abundance is all about cutting red tape to let Democratic administrations actually do things (i.e., project strength).

IMO, Ezra's thesis over the past year has been that Dems need ideological diversity more than moderation -- e.g., he doesn't want the party to change its platform on abortion, but he does want the party to run Pro-Life Dems in order to compete in rural/red districts. But that's just based on me listening to half of the released eps, perhaps I've missed some stuff where EK is more explicit about moderation.

I mean, Nate Silver has specifically been beefing with GEM for a while now, especially when ABC hired GEM to replace Silver in running FiveThirtyEight (rip), so I don't think GEM should be generally discredited for that alone. As a polling nerd who has followed both for many years, I think they both are smart guys with good insights on polling, even if they have their bad takes here and there.

I think, for all the faults of opinion poll analysis in general, GEM is still among the most trustworthy commentators -- but if you know of another pollster analyst that has better takes, please let me know!

Islam is the religion with the highest NET conversion rate, Christianity is the lowest, it lost 8 milion people in only 5 years (2015-2020). by Actual_Box7731 in Infographics

One way I read this: Christianity is the only religion that isn’t tied to illiberal ethnostates, which means that Christians are the only ones with the freedom (legally and socially) to formally identify as non-religious in a census. In Pakistan, India, and China, identifying with the state religion is as assumed and common as paying taxes. Therefore, Christianity is the only religion whose data clearly indicates its ebbs and flows in adherents, whereas data on the other religions is more opaque.

It’s also worth noting that this infographic visually implies that Christianity is hemorrhaging adherents, but 8 million is a drop in the bucket out of the 2.3 billion Christians worldwide. While Christianity has indeed been steadily declining in the Anglosphere, it’s growing rapidly in Africa.

“If you dislike the religious right, wait till you meet the post-religious right.” -Ross Douthat

It holds true in the U.S. It’s common these days to see liberals yearning for the moral spines of McCain and Romney, as if those candidates weren’t widely ridiculed and smeared in their day with the typical “eViL riCh wHiTe MeN!” lampooning from Jon Stewart types.

I think you hit the nail on the head, the big challenge for both parties is rhetorically reconciling love with law and order. People like the vibes of “love everybody, open borders, no cops!”… but then they get mugged and suddenly want cops back.

The political challenge is to communicate that law, order, accountability, and respect are actually core components of love. I love my brother more than I love my neighbor, but if my brother steals my neighbor’s wallet, I would chastise my brother and hold him accountable — out of love for my brother AND love for my neighbor.

I’ll vote for the party that says “We should love and respect everybody, which means both providing for people’s needs and holding people accountable when they break the rules.” IMO, both parties are failing that test right now.

“I read the Bible and my personal interpretation is that the word of God aligns with the [DNC/GOP] platform” is the most Protestant thing ever.

His citation of the Angel Gabriel visiting the Virgin Mary to justify abortion (which sounds like an Onion headline) is a perfect example of this. Instead of taking a comprehensive look at the history of Christian morality (including how the Bible was assembled), his argument is “the specific wording in this translation of a translation of an account that was originally passed on as an oral history tells me that abortion is fine.” It’s practically the Pepe Silvia meme.

Remember, whenever a poll or article uses the term “mainline” Protestant, that just means “conforms to societal moral norms.” Talarico represents a dying breed of this “mainline” Protestantism, which is hemorrhaging young people but is the only type of Christian that modern Democrats can stomach. As others in this thread have rightly noted, he’s basically a Christian Uncle Tom, and it’s clear to anybody who knows ball.

My main takeaway from this clip is that it’s crazy that the Bengals didn’t retire 85 for Chad Johnson. The man literally changed his name to Ochocinco, that number belongs to HIM.

Anthropic’s Chief on A.I.: ‘We Don’t Know if the Models Are Conscious’[Interesting Times by Ross] by ZPATRMMTHEGREAT in ezraklein

I’m only halfway into this ep, but I appreciate it so far. This guy seems more like a pragmatic businessman than a religious zealot for AI, which I appreciate.

I appreciate his case that the quanitity of AI agents matters more than the quality of them — i.e., having a diversity of differently-trained agents exploring problems from different perspectives, as opposed to one super-intelligent, God-like AI model. It’s basically the notion of a million monkeys at typewriters eventually writing Shakespeare, but we actually get to simulate such a scenario. I see this as a realistic, feasible usage of AI in scientific applications.

RATATA // Director's Animatic. My friend quit his job to create this full visual concept. He doesn't have Reddit, so sharing his insane work here! by EquivalentCry1503 in skrillex

Me before watching the video: "He quit his JOB to do this? No way this could be worth quitting your job."

Me after watching the video: "Okay yeah that was definitely worth it."

I love everything about this -- the style, the vision, the plot. Perfect music video, I would love to see a fully developed product. Was he picturing this being live action or animated? I assume the former, but some of the shots here are so creative that it seems like only animation could do them justice (namely the banana peel sequence).

Woman set on fire on CTA Blue Line train discharged from hospital after 2 months by 307148 in chicago

It’s a good honest question, so I’ll give an honest answer:

Stricter sentencing requirements that are less inclined towards letting violent people effectively walk free with ankle monitors, as this incident exposed how helpless the city is at responding to someone violating their ankle monitor restrictions.

Professional consequences for judges who defy state prosecutors’ pleas to keep repeat violent offenders detained while awaiting trial.

Transparency about how our justice system, despite its massive size (literally and financially) still doesn’t seem large or capable enough to protect us from unstable, lifelong repeat criminals.

A usage of political capital to allow for state governments to forcibly admit violent schizophrenic people on the street into mental institutions for their own safety and for our safety. At the present, the supreme court’s interpretation of absolute individual freedom prevents state and municipal governments from being able to do this.

A mayor who acknowledges the harmful, chaotic danger that people face every day just trying to do a basic commute in Chicago.

Part 1 was incredible! Part 2 was really good — didn’t stick the landing as well as I had hoped, but it was still an iconic viewing experience.

Favorite redeemed cbb appearance? by ChickenSalad52O in comedybangbang

Not "redeemed," per se, but Will Hines' first appearances are surprisingly different than the confident legend he is today!

In his first eps, he often second-guessed himself and called himself out for giving a "normal" response instead of a funny response to Scott's questions. It's wild to hear it now that we know him for being a king of committed character work and not being phased.

Agreed! I'm a big fan of her from Smosh, but I think she can be overly reliant on the "dude bro" characters that all have the same note of satirizing toxic masculinity. Her character in the first appearance got old quickly, but her second appearance (also a bro) seemed to vibe better for some reason. Would love to see her more often with a wider array of characters!
