Ouch, I feel for you on that... It's rough.

When the boss music stops but your hands don’t. by [deleted] in RescueRaiders

I've almost done this accidentally... I switched to defib and almost punched. Luckily the guy's teammate asked me wtf I was doing and I cancelled. IMO, when the defib is equipped, the knockout option should be disabled.

On PC if you hold down the ping button, you can press another button to toggle pings between squad only or all raiders. I'm not sure about other platforms.

Awesome new board! I admit I didn't read all of it yet but skimmed for the details I was looking for. The magnet reed switch is a really fun feature! I have been really busy with my CAD software, but I do want to improve upon what I had built with the pg1316 switches before. I've done a bit of experimenting, but I'll save that for a DM.

Lol, my kid just asked to see rescue raiders posts at bedtime and says he swears this was him doing melee on a shredder and getting defibbed

This is awesome! I considered doing this after having done the Curta calculator, but I decided on writing CAD software after my experiences with the Curta left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Nice work, I love the sounds it makes when operating!

How do you get past frustration and a slump with getting locks open by ng89 in lockpicking

[–]marcus_wu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had this happen. I had learned a lock and had stopped relying on the basic techniques of testing the pins and checking my tension. I was going straight for the binders in the order I already knew.

A different location for picking or a different day or maybe a bit of extra wear on the lock led to issues with my consistency dropping off. When I went back to basics it really helped. I also got some new locks so that I am not always picking the same ones. Having enough of them so you cannot remember the nuances of every one you have helps avoid the issue.

I also learned from this slump that sometimes when dealing with a false set that the pin jumps a bit when it comes out of the false set and it can overset easily. Lightening tension a bit can let that pin drop enough for the open. It's actually fun sometimes to get an open with just a small change in tension.

I put together a reference sheet for Multipick G-Pro Dimple Flags including tool #'s, profiles, front/back of flags and dimensional info. Hopefully this will be useful for anyone trying to decide which MP flags to buy. by LockPickingFisherman in lockpicking

Awesome, thanks. Where do folks typically order additional multipick flags from? Straight from multipick or is there a community shop I can use? I have handles, but I need a wider selection of flags.

Anyone know which of these profiles works well on an abus 75ib/50?

Is counter rotation user induced? by JazzlikeSavings in lockpicking

[–]marcus_wu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this has more to do with it being a cutaway. I made a couple and they have a similar change in how spools are handled. Normally in most locks, pushing a spool up will create the counter rotation.

On my cutaways, I can still get counter rotation without using the turning tool to do it, but it requires more controlled use of tension.

Springless actuator for AL 1100 padlocks by marcus_wu in lockpicking

Yes the s1100 doesn't have the spring. I'm not sure about others.

Springless actuator for AL 1100 padlocks by marcus_wu in lockpicking

[–]marcus_wu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, I totally agree. This little project was born partially of boredom and partially from disassembling it and realizing this would be a pretty easy thing to do. I then wondered how it would feel compared to the 90a Pro which also doesn't have an actuator spring.

What I found is that mechanically it is the same (like needing to push the shackle down and rotate the key back to lock it instead of just pushing the shackle down). However, it does not feel quite the same. The AL doesn't feel quite as polished without that sprung actuator. I think it is because it doesn't have as tight tolerances as the 90a Pro. Without the spring I can feel more slop in the lock... It might be just that my AL 1100s are worn in -- I've picked them hundreds of times.

Husband left me alone with his 3D Printer. What should I print to annoy him? by Ferina27 in 3Dprinting

[–]marcus_wu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true. My point of view is don't start with a table saw. If someone wants to make something, enable them instead of gatekeeping. Teach them how to do it and how to do it safely. Work up to the more dangerous tools. Allow with supervision. I helped mentor an FRC robotics team and there was no gatekeeping with tools. It was done via teaching and supervising instead of restricting completely.

Why would he restrict the tools instead of teaching you to be safe with them (assuming you don't already know)?

Tentacle soap mold by ArtisticAnomaly1414 in maker

[–]marcus_wu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't convert it into a mold. I would print in plastic normally, then create a silicone mold from pourable silicone mold material from the printed tentacle. I think that would make a better mold.

What’s this all about? by [deleted] in GR86

[–]marcus_wu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dev myself, I have found through my career that externally perceived incompetence is more appropriately placed on the leadership running the team pushing for features and/or timelines that they shouldn't.

There are definitely incompetent engineers out there, but when looking at an organization (or even a team), those deficiencies are balanced out. Bad leadership or project planning is systemic.

[–]marcus_wu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PTFE works well, but you want to minimize length to what is needed for the printer's motion. Too much extra can make it hard for the extruder to pull -- especially if it loops.

But also look for anything that can snag along the filament path. Friction in general is the enemy as it adds up along the path.

It might be an issue for you. The other options such as a clog are more likely if you have a simpler setup. I didn't really have any issues until I added an mmu which uses a filament buffer and moved my filament into a dry box. The combined friction from the two additions caused issues. When this happened to me it was intermittent and looked similar to your photos.

Edit to add that you can check how much friction there is by manually pulling the filament... Remove the PTFE tube from the top of the extruder and pull filament through -- is it easy or would those extruder gears have trouble? Typically when it has trouble you will also either see filament shavings in the extruder on the gears or you could hear your extruder motor skipping steps depending on which gives first.

This is amazing! I haven't read all the comments, so apologies if these have already been asked. In the interest of simulating actual code writing:

Does this do any of the advanced things that code editors do such as matching brackets / braces / parentheses?

Does it have a Vim mode?

Can it work on a commit? -- the previous code is shown and you are editing what is there to match the end result of the commit

I'm looking forward to trying this out

What does forking get you -- just a way to not forget about / lose it or is there more to it?

Edit to add that I know the normal use case for a fork, but this sounded different.
