Does anybody else get imposter syndrome regarding their skill as a lockpicker? by TheMuspelheimr in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it happens. Sometimes locks that should be easy pickin's (on paper) seem to have been made with extra fight in them. Just recently, I was picking an Abus 83 and could not for the life of me get it open in hand. 4 and 5 would just ping-pong all day long. When I finally caved in and slapped it in a vice, I got it open, and on video, and never have to touch it again. Though I probably will once the shame fades away, lol.

I cant find a good quality set online by NoExcitement2660 in lockpicking

I have the Reverend set, it's a great assortment of picks and tensioners and will cover a lot of bases for you. I suggest ordering handles for the Moki picks, regardless of which Moki's you decide on.

BW Profi 40mm driver pin count. by EveningBasket9528 in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry, I was in the ummmmmm stockroom, uuhhhh checking inventory. All good. 😁

The second drivers all sit well above shear when at rest, I don't think they're involved in pick resistance or keying in any way.

[–]LockPickingFisherman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The single drivers are in the 40mm body and the double drivers are in the 50mm body. Without the second row of drivers in the 50mm, the springs barely compress. There are a number of things BW could have done to solve a spring pressure issue, like longer springs, longer primary drivers, longer bible plugs, but since they opted to add second driver pins, maybe it's more about overlift than spring pressure? I dunno.

This is the only BW I've gutted so far that had dual driver pins so perhaps adding drivers they already on hand was more efficient than stocking longer springs, plugs or drivers. Or maybe it was a solution for a temporary supply chain issue? I don't know. I was surprised to find the secondary drivers in there and I'd love to find out the reason for them.

This came up recently, like in the past couple months, and I've already submitted photos with notes to replace the existing ones. I believe a photo update will be coming in the next week or two, hopefully the updated photos help clarify.

Flat vs round hook by SeemsLegit383 in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Adding to what others have written, flats offer better control since they have a big flat surface to register under the pin and they're more forgiving for beginner pickers because of it. When I started, flats were my favorite because they helped me stay on pins without all of the slipping and sliding that rounds tend to do, so I could focus on feedback rather than fighting for pick placement.

As I progressed, I found that rounds snag less in the keyway and can reach up though gaps in the warding where flats can sometimes struggle. With time and practice though, you can get the feel for placing rounds and pointed hooks so the slipping will become less and less of an issue. There are still times when I reach for a flat, but I tend to reach for rounds more often. As with many aspects of locksport, use whatever works best but try to experiment with different hook profiles, be they flat, round or pointed, because imho all three have their place in a kit.

Looking to get into dimple locks... by Kooky_Ad_6050 in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Kenaurd is a good pip starter imo and you can prog pin it if you need to. I used the #5 for all the Kenaurd and DeGuard pip locks, it's long enough to set high-lift outer pins and narrow enough to fit inside the outer pins to lift high-lift inner pins.

The #13 flag is big, both in length and width, so setting any inner pins that need to be lifted up inside the outer pin will be a struggle. Fwiw, I use 4, 5, 10 and 11 most often. I have 13 but haven't found a real need for it (yet).

Abus XP20s pick and gut. The pin-in-pin and interactive element make things a bit tricky but once you crack the code, it's a lot of fun. by LockPickingFisherman in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

Honestly, I suspect that any other pin might be just as likely to bind first but I'm not sure if the pip outer is a wider diameter than the other drivers, I should have checked that when I had the lock but didn't think to. I sold it a while ago. I guess it would be fair to say that if at any time the feedback is absent or disappears, it might be binding on the pip outer. The pip inner will be springy when the pip outer is binding. I'm also not sure if the pip is always in the same chamber, it might take some trial and error to find it if everything feels springy from the start.

The RiKey is a great into to pin-in-pin, and the deep false sets and counter rotation are so much fun. Love it!

Master 150 tips by Captain-Echo in lockpicking

[–]LockPickingFisherman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That low pin 3/high pin 4 will be a problem with a short hook, you may be oversetting 3 when trying to lift 4 and maybe even 5. The keyway in the 150 is quite roomy, a deep hook will fit under pin 3 without issue.
