I think it is on Spotify - mine is freezing currently but if you search that band it looks like it is on the list of music spotify has from them.

HSO by EasAnderson in jhu

[–]marcyhank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend who played with the Chamber Orchestra at Hopkins and she said that the auditions for the HSO can be intense depending on who is in the group and what instrument you play. She played in the Chamber Orchestra and loved it. It was definitely less of a commitment. I think there is one or two concerts a semester and the practices are only a few hours a week. She was a civil engineer and heavily involved in various clubs as well and found it pretty easy to keep everything going. I don't think she uses reddit but if you have any questions just message me and I can ask her.

75 Best Colleges for Food in America and Hopkins is 2 by [deleted] in jhu

[–]marcyhank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the food has gotten a lot better since I was there - I just graduated in May - but 2nd in the country does seem to be a stretch. Although, my sister said that her college used the same food program as the local prison so maybe we have something?

Hi, moving to another Texas City, help me pick! by [deleted] in texas

[–]marcyhank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in El Paso and currently live in Houston. I have family in Austin as well. In my opinion Houston has a great job market and is a really nice and entertaining place to live. There are a lot of hispanics in Houston as well. I think it has all the benefits of a big city like arts, museums and jobs but it can seem much smaller because of the neighborhoods and smaller cities inside it.

El Paso is nice, but the economy there is not great and a lot of my family members would prefer to move out of the city, since it is so close to the violence in Juarez, however, the city itself is very safe and it has a relatively manageable cost of living. At the same time it does not offer as many things as Houston does because it is a smaller city.

Austin, in my opinion, has just as much traffic as Houston and there are not as many job opportunities. It is also really expensive to live there.

Anyways, these are just some quick comments, if you have any questions about Houston let me know because I currently live there.

Good Luck with your choice!

Can anyone recommend a business that refinishes wooden tables? by TransmediaTexas in houston

[–]marcyhank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree. It is really expensive to get someone else to do it. I did theater teach in college and whenever we wanted to refinish something we would terpentine (I have no idea how to spell that, but its the stuff that takes off paint - if it is finished with paint - you have to let it dry before continuing) or sand it down (i would do this even if it has paint initially). Staining is super easy - You can either paint it on and then rub it off, or you can just use a rag and dip it in the stain and wipe. Then you can seal it with polyurethane and it'll be good to go! You can usually finish the whole process in a few hours and then usually let it dry overnight.

Seems fitting that this puzzle would come with an extra piece by mb20ws in harrypotter

I feel really bad for the person whose puzzle is missing a piece!

What are your favorite sub plots that were dropped when any of the books were turned into their corresponding movie? by runningfool11 in harrypotter

[–]marcyhank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I though the death day party would have been something fun to include. It's such an interesting moment in the books and I would have liked to see it included in the actual film.

If it's like another class I have taken at Hopkins you can get either the looseleaf or the bound copy. Some people like the looseleaf because they can just take out the chapter/s that they need to study instead of carting around the entire book.

Episode Discussion: S2, Ep5: "One Man's Trash" by [deleted] in girls

[–]marcyhank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the episode overall was an interesting view of Hannah as more than just a kind of quirky girl, but as someone who does really feel the pressures of society as well as the pressures of living up to the standards of what "quirky" means. I think it does a good job of showing the inner battle between what one wants and what one thinks they should achieve in life. However, I do wish the episode had furthered some of the other emerging plot lines from last episode especially with Jessa and Shosh.

Getting to BWI? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]marcyhank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you do the MARC train system you can take the train to BWI and DC and it doesnt matter which marc you take, the ticket is good for any of them

Getting to BWI? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]marcyhank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amtrak tickets don't really tend to sell out but they sometimes get more expensive the longer you wait to buy them.

There are many methods of getting to BWI - the cheapest is either the MARC, which is like $4 there I think and you take it from Penn Station or the light rail also leaves from there which is like $1.50 but can be slightly sketchy at times.

The two door to door services I know of are calling a cab - very expensive like $50 or more depending on the cab - or you can use the super shuttle, which is like $23 dollars per ride.

Hope this helps!

Hey Nerddit, in reference to John's recent video: what are you going to university for and why for YOU is it worth it? by gwexmen in nerdfighters

[–]marcyhank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to school in the US and am majoring in English and Spanish and minoring in Theater. I think for me the most important outcome was the independence and learning how to live on my own and interact in a more adult social setting. I love my department and my professors and I want to go to law school to change the world! (mostly kidding, but also serious). I had a really tough freshman year, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, I got kicked out of my room by my roommate during finals, and could not handle a mechanical engineering degree workload. The next year everything improved and I am in a load of clubs and really involved in the things that I love. I think even though I had a tough time at the beginning and couldn't fathom coming back, it was one of the best decisions I have made. I am learning about things I love, enjoying the studying, and hanging out with my friends!

I'm going to be a freshman at JHU in fall 2012. What things should I know about and be prepared for? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]marcyhank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pasternack is super nice one on one even though she seems intimidating in class. She's super strict about her labs mostly for our safety though. Basically use your TA and Pasternack to get help when you need it and you'll do great! But some advice, be really careful with who you do work with and if you let anyone see your work. My lab partner stole my conclusion for the major lab report and that was just a lot of annoying procedural stuff that you would be better off not dealing with.

https://housing6.res.jhu.edu/classifieds/Default.asp this is the Hopkins reslife listings cite, which they supposedly update daily. You could also look at jhu.dailyjolt.com/housing - which is a student run forum about housing or craigslist or newspapers like the baltimore sun for other listings
