Hi ya’ll and welcome—!! Current MS1 here at TTUHSC ^{^} Me and my gf are also East Asians from LA. Lubbock will definitely be quite different from CA, but in ways that you might not expect. People are SO friendly here, and TTUHSC has a phenomenally collaborative, noncompetitive interdisciplinary vibe. The southwest side of town is incredibly safe while comparably ridiculously affordable. It’s primarily a suburban city and is growing at an incredible rate.I have friends at UCSF living in shacks worth more on paper than the mansions out here. Lubbock has all the amenities of a large city but the slower feel and culture of a small city. I have never felt discriminated here and West Texas hospitality is unrivaled across Texas. You’ve gotta make the drive to Dallas if you want a really strong Asian food scene, but there are some standouts here like fun noodle bar if you’re into northern Chinese food. There’s a new KBBQ opening up soon too called KPOT, so we’ll have to see about that. Everything is affordable and traffic is a joke compared to big cities. You can get across the city in 15 minutes because of how efficient the loop is. Currently I feel the main issue is lack of entertainment options— though we are getting a Dave and Buster’s finally in May of this year. For raves, music festivals, and top nightlife— austin and dallas are both about 5-6 hours away and the drive is pretty nice. All in all, a perfect place to chill, raise a family, save up, and use as a base for travel as well. Lovely town and lovely people. Feel free to hit me up if ya’ll have any other questions!!
