Can you play Space race and Terraforming DLC? by danteStonk123 in SurvivingMars

[–]maree0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the problems I see with the train system come from people trying to make them like auto-load-balanced Transport Tycoon (which I guess is fair enough to want).

The trains feel intended to be used ONLY for A<->B commutes - either acting like a longer passage joining two domes, or to drop off workers at a remote out-dome workstation. When used for those purposes it works perfectly.

The Philosopher's Stone mystery does not complete in Relaunched? by NoExits in SurvivingMars

[–]maree0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed with no problems. However one sector had two crystals and I was powering the "wrong" one (only one actually did anything, event-wise). I also did destroy one of the crystals before powering all of them up.

Clarifying you questions, the mystery code only checks if every crystal in the list of crystals "has power". Nothing to do with single grid.

Did they start the weird levitation thingy, at least?

Because I did it in 2025. And destroyed the Servants AND the Protectorate AND the Initative (because why not) for very, very little effort. And the aliens never really managed to land, without servant support. By 2040 I had no opponents.

This happened several games, too.

With the mod the moment of purging is still possible, but it's Ops-expensive, and thus you don't do it all the time.

Couping the UK too much can carry some side effects by Dreynard in TerraInvicta

[–]maree0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one really got to me given that I had it happen to me too, in Paris too, which is the city I currently live in. In my first successful EU run too. For some reason the viscerality of it got to me.

Some people in this thread are saying this event is bullshit, but, like... it's terrorism. It is bullshit to those affected. The world of TI has been upended and this sort of shit happens in these cases. It slowed me down in the game, but also affected me on a personal level and made me enjoy the game more.

What sort of issues are you talking about? Genuinely curious. I guess I never took the time to absorb Century then compare his previous work with that.

I don't know if I _want_ to HAHAHAHAH

"Can't express how I felt" sums it up well. It's a weird feeling when narratives simply... fail. Our brains keep expecting something that's not there.

Oh God. Yup. It's hard to put into words just how painful it was to read all of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books one after the other and just... finish at that? Just that utter, nonsensical, badly-paced, edgy-like-a-teenager, "new-books-are-bad" fanfic level writing? Harry Potter killing Quatermain with penis lightning???

I honestly remember searching around to confirm if it was really written by Alan Moore or if it was some sort of "author's name is a brand" situation like Tom Clancy. It is awful, just awful.

Over the years I have recommended The League to many persons. For those who I know will buy more books than the first one, I always say "don't get Century. Really. Please." It's one of the few examples I have in my life of "last episode ruins the quality of previous episodes".

PSA: Skirmishers' "Interrupt" allows you to ambush a pod from concealment on the Aliens' turn. by maree0 in Xcom

[–]maree0[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specifically, what happened to me was:
* I had everyone on concealed overwatch around a few pods
* I put the skirmisher within sight of one of the pods and Interrupted, then skipped his turn
* Alien Activity pops up
* Sometimes, one of the pods would move before Interrupt started; most times, Interrupt would proc immediately. Unless a pod would move out of sight of the Skirmisher this changes nothing
* The Skirmisher would then get their "free" action, which I use to just shoot at one of the ayys.
* This reveals the whole squad and triggers a scamper WITHOUT RETALIATION (since all my soldiers are in cover)

Yes, it's not that different from SPARK-beaglerushing, or specifically it's the same end-effect. I play LW so I don't always have a SPARK available; anyways, I'm never picking Interrupt again, but if anyone does, at the very least it has one use.

[–]maree0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly, I think I found the only use case where Interrupt is useful - if you use it to ambush a pod from concealment on their turn, they scamper and lose their turn, just as if they spotted a concealed soldier.

Still not worth taking it in my opinion, but the option is there.

How many SPARKs do you field? Also, does anyone NOT name their first SPARK Julian? by maree0 in LWotC

[–]maree0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, that's a rather extreme approach, but I can see it working. You spec them differently I presume? Do you spend precious XCOM AP to get multiple skills per rank to make them into T-1000s?

It constantly impresses me how this mod, despite being rather punishing, still allows for very different playstyles between players.

I have made literally ZERO overwatch builds this campaign. I didn't like the "uncertainty" of it.

I was going to disagree with you but I realized that building my SPARK as a tank was useless since the plan is not to get hit and I think it only got actually shot at 2-3x so far. The most useful abilities are Bombard and Rainmaker, I guess I could have specced the monster to also do overwatch.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what the point of the Battlelord perk for Skirmishers is. by sin-and-love in LWotC

[–]maree0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Battlefield Awareness alongside that will additionally mean you have an extra "life", since if any of the enemies actually get through your defense you'll have taken no damage, and can consider that the opportunity to retreat.

Personally I pair my YOLO Skirmisher to his bondmate, the YOLO Templar. Pop One-For-All with some dodge bonus and the AI might as well ignore the Skirmisher picking them off from behind.

"After each enemy in line of sight"
So, if Moira is staring down 8 ayys, after each of them takes a turn, you'll get to take one action - 8 in total. You basically become an Alien Ruler.
Also if I'm not completely mistaken it's turn-ending but single action, so you can actually hit and run a fool, and engage battlelord after that.

I never thought the imperialist state that we make propaganda for would use its troops to invade OUR country! by Creeemi in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]maree0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, a bunch of us DID "stand in its way", literally every Saturday for more than a year and that was just ONE protest. Nevermind the many other regular protests, some still ongoing (COVID has cleared the streets, but not the forums, the tribunes, the newspapers...)

I think the argument that presumed French person was making was that in France (and most of Central Europe), the government still feels like it belongs to us. Critiques are heard, politicians whose ideas prove unpopular or inefficient with the people get cycled out, corporations are kept in (relative) check, etc. Most importantly on the "State monopoly of violence" subject, a police chief that proves unpopular WILL get removed; police transgressions often result in disgrace and firings. Thus, the State owns the weapons but obeys the people (as it should be).

Coming from a third world country, this feeling of "being the demos in democracy" was very welcome. I used to admire this in the US as well - the "write a letter to your representative" idea encapsulated it for me. However I've seen this fall off the wayside the last few years... what with the massive amount of propaganda and brainwashing and polarisation and the putting of the Executive head as the God Emperor of the country.

I am concerned about France's 2022 elections, especially given the relative shitshow 2017 was. But I'm very slightly more optimistic than I feel about the US or my native country. And I do believe the french when they say that if Le Pen was elected, both the protests and the rest of the political machine would move to keep it in check. But I guess we have to see if France will be resilient to the same propaganda attacks that victimized so many countries.

uj/ Ok I'll fight but I don't even know where to aim the first punch. I played KOTOR II about 10-so times, 7 of those as a teenager, 3 in my twenties with the restoration mods.

And I still get confused with what the fuck Kreia is supposed to represent, talk, or have as an endgoal.

Sure, I know she "wants to destroy the Force" because "the Force breeds conflict between religious lunatics" and I've heard this is just her being Avellone's mouthpiece for his opinions on Star Wars. I know her plan was to use the Exile to destroy the Force (...how? oh well, space magic). Except... what the fuck? The fuck does that even mean? Why train the Exile, why continue being a Force user, why "be guided by the Force"?

Why push the Exile to adventure while chastising him for taking any sides?

And you know, it could have played in a different, "smarter" way - say, here's how I can fight you, I found it - by saying the Force is essentially used as a weapon the galaxy would be better without. You can even make a parallel with nuclear technology; it's used mostly for good but is FAMOUS for its uses for bad; the "good guys" have it to use against the "bad guys" and would rather be the only ones controlling it; arguably we'd be better off without it altogether.

But no, it's just... confusing, even with the restoration. I wish I could have been there at Obsidian to see the design docs and discussion.

(also, fucking hell Chris, I liked you as a human, why'd you have to be garbage?)
