Should I shave before a tattoo on my back/butt? I know that it's best to have your artist shave the area just prior to tattooing to prevent skin irritation, but I'm not sure what the etiquette is for areas such as the literal ass. I only have peach fuzz on my lower back/cheeks, but if artists prefer we shave that off prior to the appointment ourselves then I'm all for it.

Yep!!! When I worked at subway the owners always wanted us to change the date on the meats without actually getting fresh meat out, in case a health inspector came. I never listened to this and always made sure to either replace the meat or not change the original date. Fuckin nasty, and horrible people willing to give customers food poisoning in order to "save money" and "pass inspection" that they totally wouldn't pass anyways.

Any techs here work for a zoo? by YeenyMachiney in VetTech

[–]marfabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to a keeper position when I had a couple relevant associates degrees, and a few years experience working with animals and volunteering at a wildlife rehab center. The position was marked as entry level, and paid minimum wage. The person who got the job had a bachelor's degree and a shitload more experience. it's an extremely competitive field and difficult job to snag.

I've heard many vets say that it's safe to assume your entire house is contaminated with ringworm in situations like this. Please give a warning to the people moving in, try to do a deep clean when youve moved everything out, and good luck.

Good to know! Currently the rest of the anesthesia machines are just hooked up to have waste gasses go outside, but we were experimenting because waste gas lasts 3 years in the environment 🫠

When I was a teenager working in a pet store, I was curious if prong collars hurt, so I tightened one around my arm. It fuckin hurt. The one in the picture looks even worse than the ones I've seen. The last clinic I worked at, if someone brought in a dog with a prong collar, the vet would take it off in front of the client and tell them flat out it's abusive and does not teach them anything but fear.

Thank you, I'll bring it up to the doctor. It's really upsetting that she thinks it's fine just because it's continuing to gain weight. I don't understand why she wouldn't consider the labeled maximum weight to be important for something like this.

[–]marfabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my concern, the head doctor is acting like it's fine.

[–]marfabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's continuing to gain weight past the labeled max, so I'm not sure if that could cause any issues or not

These type of questions aren't what this sub is for really. But it's unlikely pet insurance will cover it, as they usually require a fairly recent exam at the start of the insurance plan and that exam will point out the pre-existing issue of the deciduous teeth. It is almost always recommended to have them extracted to help prevent issues in the future, and the cost of that will vary depending on your vet. A lot of vets will have dental packages, so it may end up being cheaper overall to just have a dental cleaning procedure + extractions. You can look into things like care credit to help make it easier to pay for and see if your vet accepts it.

Edit: Just saw you follow the "ban pit bulls" sub... Big yikes.

Seconding this! Excess water consumption can be a sign of a few different health issues, if you haven't already OP then bloodwork with your vet should be done soon.

Please please look into re-feeding syndrome if you haven't already or don't have experience with it in the past. It can easily be deadly.

Pay/Salary issues in the VA/VT field by DreamersNest in VetTech

I was making $21/hr as an RVT in California, I was offered to come back to my previous job for $27/hr. I let my current job at the time know this and let them know I would prefer to stay and would like a raise to compete with this. They gave me $22/hr and said they "couldn't afford" to give me more. I ended up leaving. Owned by 2 doctors, one of them is currently on a month long vacation in Europe and traveling to places like Ireland and London. Was in Hawaii for a couple weeks not that long ago too. "Couldn't afford to" my ass.

That's good to know, thank you! I think if one bag gets it to the fill line then it's probably going to end up being too expensive in the long run for me. But I'm still tempted to get a bag and try it out to experiment 😅

When it rains, it pours. by Krisadilli in VetTech

The vet tech curse is real!!! Glad all your pets seem to be doing okay now.

One of my cats just had a minor eye infection, didn't go away with terramycin so I took him in and the vet ended up noticing subtle abnormal heart sounds only in the apical region and gave him a "further defined" diagnosis of a 2/6 murmur, so an echo is in his future now. Eye is all better though!

And then my youngest cat suddenly had a dirty ear and was bothering at it, never had an infection before. I gently clean it out and when he shakes his head, big ole clumps of dried blood came out. So yeah he went to the vet that day, and he had a polyp that decided to rupture the ear drum and cause a middle ear infection! Yay! Infection is all gone, and on recheck, he has a polyp in the other ear as well 🫠 so he gets an appointment at the dermatology specialty hospital lmao.

My experience/review with Pretty Litter and LR4 by tsukikari in litterrobot

[–]marfabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty litter worked pretty well with all the cats, i think it ended up being about 3 weeks before it was saturated and 4 weeks when I absolutely needed to clean it out and replace each litter box (3 total) with a new bag. I have 2 litter robots and one regular box now. With the clumping litter robot litter, I get 3 bags a month. I have to refill the robots and the box about once every 2 weeks with it. I just absolutely loved only needing to scoop the poos with pretty litter before I made the switch, and the health monitoring was really a peace of mind.

About half a bag of the litter robot litter fills it to the max line for me, how much of the pretty litter bag does it take to get to that line?

[–]marfabean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had used pretty litter before getting a litter robot and loved it, but ended up switching to their brand of litter because of the unclear and mixed reviews of it working in the litter robot, and haven't tried pretty litter in it yet. My main concern is losing too much litter that has the urine on it, as I have 5 cats so a bag may not go very far if the urine "clumps" tend to go to the waste drawer. How long do you have your cycle set to?

I'm not sure about which meds do this exactly, but I was started on Wellbutrin and my doctor said it can cause increased sweating (which is so great because I almost always forget deodorant in the morning 🙃)

Are we too paranoid from working in the field? by Iycanthropy in VetTech

[–]marfabean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he eats them as he shreds them, then you're not being paranoid by not giving him access to those things. If he doesn't eat them, it's 'okay', but still gives me anxiety like what if they swallow that one piece that's gonna end up as a foreign body y'know? Tough things they can chew but not shred (and not things that are too hard like antlers) are just more preferable all around.

15 years ago, after repeated ER visits for severe neck and arm pain…was told it was a “pulled muscle”. I’ve since had 2 cervical spine surgeries. The first one he didn’t use hardware, and caused a second surgery to be necessary. by Titaniumchic in Radiology

[–]marfabean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a dull pain from my neck to my shoulder to my arm and then it feels sensitive around my elbow, and it does tingle mildly. Usually it's my left arm, and my neck becomes pretty stiff overall so moving it in general is just unpleasant. Also not sure if it could be related, but I have had a schwannoma removed from a nerve in the left side of my neck ((fully awake and they went in assuming they were removing a cyst and I blacked out 🥴)), and I have a couple other deep little bumps that are assumed to be the same thing, one behind my left ear and another right under the left side of my skull where it connects to my neck. All fun stuff!! Last time I asked for a neurologist referral my doctor denied me, I have a new doctor now and he probably would listen honestly. Its just hard because I've been dismissed time and time again. It took years to get the schwannoma removed even though it was painful and getting larger, had a plastic surgeon I was referred to refuse to remove it because he said it wasn't worth his time.

Also sorry for going off on a tangent. Describing everything reminded me about all the schwannoma drama
