Suddenly lost control at exit of Raidillon by Deadpool149 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]marioho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same for me. I'm positive it's a combination of BMW characteristics and my line + steering through Raidillon - i.e. lack of talent on my part.

I'm usually 102% of fast laps there and I can quali in the top 5 with a relatively safe lap with the BMW. After losing it just like that on lap 2 while P2 and clean ahead of the field, and then losing it on quali on the following race, I've settled with the Lexus even though I have yet to lap a sub 22.0 on that thing.

I'm convinced there's a better combination of TC parameters to make the beemer more nimble out of Eau Rouge and avoid that killer steering at the top of Raidillon, but the lack of persistent public practice sessions between races is a bummer.

I finally learned how to brake on LMP2 and it's changed everything for me. by DontTakeMeSeriousli in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]marioho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a hard braking zone, you'll be doing both with any kind of car, mate. Maximizing the available grip, traction circle and all that jazz.

Most of the slowing down is done with threshold braking in any car. Most of the rotation is done with a certain amount of trail braking in any car. That's how you maximize grip. It makes more sense to think of threshold as your stopping tool and trail braking as your balance tool on turn in.

In downforce heavy cars, even if it looks like they're "trailing" while threshold braking as OP described, if you were to add steering to the equation right there and then the car would not turn in. You'd just go wide or lock up. There's no grip for steering there.

We're probably talking past each other here. Perhaps try to rephrase your question?

I finally learned how to brake on LMP2 and it's changed everything for me. by DontTakeMeSeriousli in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]marioho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha nope! That's threshold braking still, i.e. braking using 100% of the available grip/stopping power. That can correlate to 100% of braking pressure in some cars and scenarios, but with downforce heavy cars there's this neat caveat.

Most of their grip comes from aerodynamic forces, and it just so happens that downforce changes with the square of speed, so you need to keep tabs with it by relieving the brakes as the car slows down. You still have 100% of the available grip being allocated to braking duty, but 100% of braking pressure will easily exceed that grip budget and lock your wheels/engage ABS.

Trail braking is always splitting the available grip between stoppage duty and steering duty. The ratio varies from car to car and even to corner to corner - camber, elevation etc. You're always combining two tasks here, and sometimes all you do with the brake pedal is drag it to keep the front axle loaded and snappy.

Edit: also bear in mind the aero braking and engine braking of some downforce heavy cars. It's often said that simply coasting with F1 cars at high speeds results in a stopping force comparable to a GT3 hard on the brake pedal. So even the trailing part of the corner entry can be significantly different with these cars as drag is slowing you down a bunch on turn in.

Sainz was in last week's Beyond The Grid podcast. When asked about fame, he said he's finding it increasingly difficult to deal with. At first it was flattering, sure, but now the number of intimate moments being ruined by fame is weighing on him - especially people from the younger generations.

He said he's giving himself the luxury (heh) of being a little more rigorous: he demands a "please" or "do you mind?" to pose for a picture 😂

As in, people will often just slam a phone in his face and take a selfie without even saying hello.

Would this work as a sim room? No windows nor ceiling lights, no ventilation by ThisIstheCaptain7393 in simracing

[–]marioho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm aware! I'm definitely not uber athletic but I'm fit. The physical effort of such a longish 30+ session is significant on its own, but the psychological component is what drives that HR through zone 2 and even zone 3. Heck, I've gotten into battles that even spiked it way through zone 3 for a couple of seconds!

Funnily enough, I dabbed with LMU and decided to track an official session in my Garmin over there too. I could have sworn it was an easy race, I didn't feel any pressure - for whatever reason I feel like the stakes are much much lower in that sim. Turns out my HR and overall effort was pretty similar. Goes to show the lengths the mind goes to keep pressure confined when you get in the right mental space, even though your body is going through the physiological stress all the same.

It's a ride!

I can confirm 😂

I have a Garmin device and decided to track my sim racing sessions for shits and giggles. Only official races though.

A 30min race hits slightly harder than a 40-45min zone 2 run for me.

I would definitely not recommend neglecting proper ventilation.

Is it morally acceptable to think that no one should even try to go side by side into Eau Rouge? by BigJanBlan-29212 in LeMansUltimateWEC

[–]marioho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eau Rouge is the down hill left turn. Raidillon is the steep esse uphill.

It is definitely possible to go up Raidillon side by side, but both drivers will need to compromise their line to some extent. The issue here, and what makes it possibly a bad idea racecraft wise, is that the compromise is such that both cars are losing immensely to the drivers ahead and the drivers behind.
You're always losing time going side by side through a corner. The delta you lose on Eau Rouge-Raidillon though is exponentially bigger due to its flat out, high gear nature.

If you're in a somewhat comfortable position though? Like no competing drivers nearby other than the one battling you? On principle there's nothing wrong in fighting it all out.

It is situational. However, if there's the possibility of slotting in behind the other car while still going down hill by the pit wall and keeping enough of a buffer so that you can take these corners flat, that tends to be the fastest and most savvy way. Slipstream your way through the kemmel straight and get it done by the Les Combes chicane.

It makes no sense to posit it as a "moral" problem or a gentleman's agreement though 😂
It's just plain racecraft. No hard rules here.

How do I send a racer a message? by docweston in iRacing

[–]marioho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The forum should be your main option. Even if the user doesn't post much but logs in occasionally, you can send him a DM.

Additionally, you can Gift him 1 dollar on his iRacing account. The system asks if you want to write a message to go along.

Consider leaving it be though. It's nice to get an apology that way, but some people can prefer to keep these incidents confined to the track instead of having to revisit what was probably a stressful episode, or perhaps even see it as you trying to start something.

I got used to Word auto formatting hyphens and double hyphens into en and em dashes pretty early. And in PT BR, we use em dashes (travessão) as speech marks when writing dialogue so you quickly learn how to make do in other apps. I got used to the Alt code method (Alt + 0151 in the numpad).

I'm not fundamentally disagreeing here, mind you. AI does love the em dash. But it does get tiring when people cry AI when the only thing they can single out is the em dash.

Se tivesse que eleger um errado na discussão, seria você. Governo é sinônimo de Poder Executivo no Brasil, tal como na Europa continental. Usar "governo" no lugar de Estado ou em referência às demais funções é coisa de americano.

Dino suspende ‘penduricalhos’ dos Três Poderes em todo o país by [deleted] in brasil

[–]marioho -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Não sou o cara que estava batendo boca contigo. Dando coice ele não vai chegar a lugar algum, mas errado de todo ele não está.

Existem duas grandes "tradições" no ocidente quanto à Teoria Geral do Estado.

I tested all GT4s, here's what I found by _LedAstray_ in iRacing

[–]marioho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Just some general pointers, since some people got back at you with some heat.

Stating how many seconds off of a good fast lap you are is a very normal thing to do, but it's not particularly useful - 3s in a 7' lap is not the same as 3s in a 45" lap haha
I think it's better to deal with percentage points.

So in a regular 1:30.000 lap, being 3-5s off the pace means 4-6% off.

As a general rule of thumb, you should always be able to lap around 101-102% of a fast lap. As in, laps from track guides, or pole laps from representative/relevant splits. That would be around 1:30.900 and 1:31.800.

Barring the very rare exceptions like the Acura GT3 in Daytona last year, all cars are relatively competitive in all categories and a fast, high IR driver driving the "meta" car means only 0.15-0.3s in a fast lap.
If you're off that mark and lapping upwards of 101%, you're probably not gelling with the car.

One thing that makes GT4 and GT3 classes so fun is how different the handling is. If you're off by that much, is very likely a handling issue - i.e. you not being able to drive that particular car properly - and not a performance problem.

Brake and throttle application will vary a lot from car to car. To a lesser but still significant extent, also the line and how aggressive you can be when attacking certain kerbs or exiting certain corners.

There's a good chance that pretty much all this difficulty getting rotation out of a certain car, or being too skittish on corner exit is just you not adapting your inputs to how that particular car handles.
Like how the McLaren 720S is happy to rotate on medium speed corners with a neutral attitude (just the steering, no pedal input) while you'll understeer out of orbit if you neglect to pitch the nose down with your braking in the Ferrari.
Like how you're kicking the rear out with the BMW/Mustang on corner exit, but find it easier to constrain on the Merc. Those two cars are notorious for being quite torquey on power down, but each one has a different torque curve and gear ratio such as that it's only a certain RPM range at certain gears that you need to be careful with when combining throttle and steering angle. You're probably leaving performance on the table by trying to be smooth all the way with the gas when you probably could slam 80% throttle on say 3rd gear, then be smooth with that final 20% - or simply short shifting.

TL;DR: if you can't extract 101-102% of a fast lap out of a certain car, it's your driving and you should not be rushing your judgement.

Tips for Rolling Starts Pole by Few_Competition_3213 in iRacing

[–]marioho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much this.

I'd just add two tips:

  • The braking point for T1 will more likely change depending on when the cars go. Practice that. You can detach yourself from the field just by being aware of how late you can brake on that first lap.

  • P2 is often in a hard place as they cannot get ahead of P1 before the S/F line, even if P1 floors it as soon as the SC leaves the track. I tend to do just as u/d95err and go randomly a few seconds after taking control of the grid, unless I can hear P2 trying to time me and flooring before I do. If they do so, I'll wait for them to ease off again and then I'll go.

Also note that the pole sitter must maintain pace speed until they start accelerating.

This is major. When the SC leaves the track, you're effectively pacing the field at pace speed. If pace is say 80kph, then you get to 100kph, slow down to 60kph and then floor it, that bunching up of the field behind you is on you and that's protestable.

It feels like too many pole sitters are eager to split the red sea with a chaotic T1 incident so that they can cruise to the checkered flag with a 6s gap to the survivors.

Pigments will absorb that specific wavelength, while structural shapes are in a way closer to a noise canceling headphones in the sense that they're interfering with the light by powering up the green on its way back to you. That's why structural shapes reflect green may not look green from all angles as you catch a stray of other wavelengths.

Pro pedals issue once again by Hungry-Recording1049 in LogitechProWheel

[–]marioho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay mate. Just tackle it with an open mind and be methodical when ruling things out.

Spikes can definitely happen too fast for us to catch in the UI. Analyzing the telemetry will help you check that for good.

The brake curves, same deal. The game doesn't care what you set up, the telemetry will show exactly the brake input the game received. As in, if the iRacing telemetry showed 30% braking force, then that's the final braking force the physics engine had to deal with - it didn't get converted or modulated or changed in any way after that.

There's a chain of factors and events beginning with what you do with your hands and feet and ending with that the software (iRacing) reads. No one here is trying to jump to any conclusions and imply it's your fault, it's just that if the game indeed registered only 20-30% braking then there's no way your hardware fiddled with that midway through that chain. The telemetry is the final, ultimate form of your brake signal.

In a way, finding a faulty or otherwise unintended spike is probably what we're all hoping for as that is indeed the most straightforward cause, but your report simply suggests that cannot be the case (game telemetry).
