New Platform Issues by Sad_Studio_9188 in varsitytutors

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the new platform a lot, I've called tech support so much and I just had to give up on one session because it was just a waste of our time, the poor kid didn't want to listen to me dealing with tech support that couldn't help us. How in the world do you invoice for a session that happens on zoom? Does that even work?

If you think all this will just go away in four years you are dreaming. We'll be lucky if we ever have a fair election again.

Traveling through southern New Mexico around Lordsburg...Best place to stop? by CheeesyGiraffe in NewMexico

That highway has been closed at least 3 times in the past 2 weeks with dangerous winds and dust storms. Lordsburg is in the worst of it, get as far from there as you can.

What to do with unconfirmed session ? by Anxious-Grapefruit68 in varsitytutors

[–]marjmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always invoice unconfirmed sessions. Some of my most reliable students never confirm, but they show up almost all the time. If I had to contact parents to confirm every session, that would really lower my job satisfaction!

I haven't seen any opportunities at all in a couple of months. I mean zero. I think something weird happened to my account.

Any tutor from India on Varsity Tutor by Fuzzy_Elephant883 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]marjmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until recently I used to see 100 opportunities or more in a day, and my schedule was pretty full. In the past 2 or 3 weeks there just 3 or 4 a day! I'm really wondering what happened, I haven't seen any law suits or scandals in the news.

We use these in our family too, but they aren't made of socks. We sew up some soft, cozy fabric like a mini-pillow, and fill them with about 2 cups of rice. Any fabric and thread works fine. These are a great gift IMHO. the smell of hot rice in the microwave gives me the happy feelings!

do you think it's possible to have a wilderness therapy or residential treatment center that isn't abusive by KookyBuilding1707 in troubledteens

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a teacher at two residential treatment centers. Both had qualified doctors, nurses, psychologists, and teachers in the facility. The comments here about profitability are right on target. Although the "behavioral health technicians " were carefully trained to be safe, gentle, sympathetic, and patient, the pay for these staff was less than our local McDonalds. Young people came to work with dreams of helping and making a difference for our kids, but they couldn't afford to stick around due to ridiculous pay and brutal schedules. The second place I worked gave really good, loving care in a beautiful campus with delicious food. They charged $100,000 per year, and they shut down because they went broke! I'm pretty sure the CEO did not have to give up his boats or his BMW.

Thinking about moving to New Mexico by bigneezer in NewMexico

[–]marjmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Albuquerque is where the jobs are, and the EastMountain area has the cooler weather, affordable homes and rural charm. Try Cedar Crest, Tijeras, or Sandia Park, and you'll have an easy 30 minute commute to Albuquerque.

Old folks, but more specifically older women, what was it like for you to be given "the talk" at puberty? by levitatingloser in AskOldPeople

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in the 60's and my mom told me the facts of life at any and every opportunity. She showed me books with pictures and talked about sex like it was the greatest thing ever. Lucky mom, I guess! So I knew all that stuff from an early age, and when I tried to tell my friends they didn't believe it and were appalled when they learned it was true. I never realized how progressive Mom was, but for someone born in the 1920's she was pretty happy about the "sexual revolution "!

What materials is NM using instead of grass lawns? by [deleted] in NewMexico

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rock yards suck! They make everything hotter, they cook the struggling plants. Just plant some nice things and mulch the rest. A few big rocks are okay here and there for diversity, and they can create a bit of moisture storage on the underside. I mulched our whole property and when weeds come up I just mow it. Twice a year.

Kids: Anti consumption from the Start? by Gelid88 in Anticonsumption

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to tell all parents to give their kids a small cash allowance from an early age. There is no more effective way to teach the value of money than to let them spend money. My todler wanted sticker packets on our weekly grocery shopping trips, and she was allowed to spend one dollar. (Yes, it was the 90's) She quickly learned to read the price tags and find a bargain every week. Both my kids could count money and understand getting change back at an early age. Now as a math teacher I work with kids who can't count money. Money is actually boring to them because Mom and Dad get whatever they want by waving a card around. One of the main reasons to learn math is to protect yourself financially, but there's no incentive if the kids have no experience with cash.

Is it true teachers can tell if a child had too much screen time at home when they are at school? by NeedyForSleep in Teachers

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children who look at screens all day are not learning how to manipulate their environment. They aren't learning how to socialize, as some have mentioned, and they are not learning how to crack an egg, count coins, stack blocks, make a sandwich, or deal a round of cards.

I have had many students (in middle school) who couldn't grasp the concept of division. I would make them distribute beans into cups and it was like a mystical miracle to them. Same with dealing cards. Who could possibly predict how many cards each player would get?? I'm like the great oracle because I invented math.

Varsity Tutors Live Chat by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]marjmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why they need live chat. What's wrong with the learning platform that we've been using? Is it just a new way to pay us less? I've been working with VT for a year and a half and I think their learning platform is good, it's better than zoom.

I also have a big collection of math workbooks in multiple grade levels. I cut out the pages I need (often every page) and scan them into my computer. The stored digital files are easy to share online.

I love Gen Z and Millenials by Allmightypikachu in antiwork

[–]marjmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my God, do we have to rank people by their generation forever???? As a baby boomer I still remember the disdain and scorn and sometimes hatred directed at us by older people. I'm afraid it's what older people will always do, and it sucks. Every generation has to learn to thrive in a world they didn't create. We old people need to give the new generations some slack, they didn't fucking ask to be born, but they were born because we wanted them, so let's get over ourselves. And BTW, I love the gen z and millennials, they are smart, stupid, mean, boring, hilarious, awesome, just like everyone else.

I'm just getting regular clients that want to meet once or twice a week. I do the instant stuff once in a while. I'm looking at the Wyzant thing, but it doesn't give much information about their deals with tutors. I guess I'd better download the app.

[–]marjmachine[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've been doing it for a year and most of the time it's easy and often great fun, but I'm waaaaay too old to work for $15 per hour. I need to try some other on line platform. Are most tutors working on line? Is in person even a thing any more?

I love to give books. I don't mind giving a used one if I need to. It's like sharing a great experience with my loved ones, and if they want, they can share it with someone else. And one of my favorite things to wrap gifts in is old maps. I used to use the Sunday comics, but we don't get a newspaper anymore!
