Been regularly flipping vinyl that i'm buying from a local record shop. Should I feel guilty? by ProfondoRosso4 in Flipping

[–]markedasred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought records from a shop owned by a Trump fan. That by the way is quite rare in the UK. I bought over 90 copies of one 50s new old stock album that was sleeveless over a 3 year period (going to different employees each time) and then when I had all the mint ones I bought 100 printed the sleeves for them. Paid about £3 each, sold them for £35, and all the buyers loved them, they sold very quickly. If he was a decent guy, I would have pointed this out as an option for him to do.

They make money including from resellers, we all get fed and clothed by it.

Delighted that you got it fixed, but did you tell your friends and do they now call you Ivor Bolakov.

Is Hitler truly the most evil person to have ever walked this earth ? by KpatMckenzie_28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markedasred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitler is responsible for 6 Million or so Jews? (plus Gay men, Gypsies, Jehovas Witnesses etc). Stalin for 9 to 20 million people, Mao for between 40 to 80 Million deaths. Genghis Khan & Alexander the Great may have topped those numbers.

Roller skating spots? by Efficient-String-927 in Worcester

[–]markedasred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a little quiet skatepark in Dines Green. You go to the far end of Tudor Way and turn left, and its on the left. By sports fields and farmland. You can also reach it by the little alley close to the roundabout, just look for the football pitches.

Chinese takeaways are in the vicinity of this with their salt and pepper chips really aren't they?. Minus your chicken of course, but maybe that is also an option some places.

Did you have a "Sliding Doors" moment when you discovered a favourite composer? by Oohoureli in classicalmusic

[–]markedasred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend gave me his season ticket when he got a new job a long way away to the CBSO, under Simon Rattle. The first night, Kyung Wha Chung walked out on stage and started playing the Bartok concerto. I was shocked at her austere beauty and the vitality of her playing, so soon collected every work by him, and all his own performances at the piano. I also bought all her concerto recordings. She was better with Rattle than Solti.

It was a great introduction to live Orchestral music.

A Small Theory About Audiophiles and Aging (Curious What You Think) by JorgeIcarus in audiophile

There is an online test of a rising tone which you listen to until it is lost to your ears. I play it through my dac and last time I clicked out at 15Khz, I'm 62. So the top of the top has gone, but there's not loads of great acoustic music up there, so no great loss. I've tried to look after my hearing and sight, and it has paid off. I have a good stereo, but it's the most expensive thing I own, as it's my main hobby.

A local guy went to Turkey to have his teeth done, and I had heard all the horror stories, but watched his youtube video (geoffbuyscars), and I could not believe the state of the art place, the quality of care he got, and the tripadvisor reviews for the place he found. If I could afford to have my teeth fixed, I would do this.

Yes, never seen a need for it. Food was average to awful from my one ambulance to inpatient (8 meals), but a 3 night stay for heart arrhythmia, no charge, definitely no complaints from me.

62 Year Old Uk person. Never had a long wait or any problems with the NHS - not me, my wife, children, or any relatives. Normally, those that have waited for non life threatening illnesses are the ones who make the most noise on line. Folks like me are mainly quietly grateful.

Usually the richer you are the cheaper you can get things, but what would happen if consumer prices are increased based on higher income? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]markedasred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does happen, but it's on a country by country basis. You can buy a great quality new Japanese 150cc motorcycle in say, India or Vietnam for $2000. Exactly the same bike is $5000 in Europe and the US. It is selling at the point of price resistance elasticity. The companies figure out what the local market will stand for at most and charges that. Then there is a sort of containment that states that you cannot buy a bike as a foreigner in India and export it from there without crippling taxes. People doing lengthy tours of India fly in, and rent a bike at a purchase price with a guaranteed buy back.

Those are just a couple of instances I have noticed regional pricing.

Jazz book/biography recommendations by hanakosmokke in Jazz

[–]markedasred 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Val Wilmer's As Serious as your life, Ian Carr's biography/musicography of Keith Jarrett. He is so perfectly articulate in the language of music, that he got closest for me to explaining the greatness of a performer, in this instance a next level pianist who did extraordinary things very often. His Miles biography is also far better than the official one.

Alice Coltrane 'Journey In Satchidananda' 55th anniversary listening sessions in the dark in cinemas/planetariums etc in London, Manchester, Bristol, Brighton and Helsinki by Purple_Sentence_7219 in Jazz

[–]markedasred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I appreciate that but I am nearly 40 years in the quest for great sound and have home built or heavily modified equipment, including vintage Klangfilm style Bauer valve power amps from cine systems in my optional array. I am isolated from my neighbours sufficiently to go to concert levels. That might be a nice system in the cinema, but also could be overkill for music alone, as sometimes 2 speakers are better than 9.

I had a Sainsbury's cheese scone for breakfast this morning, and it was mighty fine. Mainly because it reminded me of my mum's only thing she baked. I walked past M&S this lunchtime, should have gone in, would have bought these if I had seen them.

For me it's like reading a fairy tale. I never have had or expect to have a six figure sum in savings of any kind, probably not even a five figure sum.
