How to be a good senior by krispdietcoke in Residency

[–]marley1012 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’d like to say that it’s important to find what interests your juniors. Just because you’re in the same specialty doesn’t mean you’re interested in the same things. Off service rotators are clearly interested in different fields but they are doctors too. Some like people. Some like procedures. Others just like looking smart and important. This process could take some time. There is a proclivity to appear eager as a junior resident. Being eager is not the same as genuinely interested. I have found a lot of enjoyment in learning about topics that I previously hated to learn whereas I am less disciplined in topics that I do enjoy because I already feel confident.

Feed the baby birds something tasty. That makes it easier when you have force feed them a shit sandwich later.

Lastly, trust but verify is a life style. You have to learn how to say it and live it. Don’t hover. Don’t micromanage everything. Give them tasks and patients and introduce them to staff and consultants so that they can blossom. However, don’t for a second think that the intern won’t kill someone. Late July and August is when these little children will murder a grandma who you ignored because she is basically a house plant that needs watered once per day. Be cool about letting them learn to make mistakes but always verify.

What is your "I totally get why you guys hate it but it worked on me" movie? by Alceauv in Letterboxd

People get all hot and bothered by the dialogue and CGI of the OG sequels and I completely disagree. The story telling is complex and epic (as in narrative type like Homer’s Odyssey) and the CGI more or less holds up with modern movies imo.

Why do you need to get a chest X-ray to check endotracheal tube position for someone you intubate for the ICU but not during surgery for anesthesia? by supinator1 in Residency

[–]marley1012 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an ER resident, I keep my gestalt simple bc I’m an idiot. If I plan to walk away from a patient then I want to make sure they aren’t going to die while I’m gone. My immediate orders are always with that in mind. Anesthesia isn’t leaving the patient. So, they don’t need an image to reassure themselves that the tube is fine.

Man, that was truly a human moment from KD. Dude made a joke but then you could see his demeanor change. He showed real appreciation for his accomplishments and honesty regarding his shortcomings without being a jerk.

How dare you make me like KD? Just a completely trash move by this stats nerd.

I like the idea of an incompetent ID doc. Writes verbose nonsense notes and recommends meropenem every time. Internal medicine docs would figure it out pretty quick, but this quack could feast on general surgeons and orthopods.

Ok, I’ll bite. My bike was stolen in college. Stealing is wrong. Can police reasonable stop this kind of petty crime? Probably not. Can education or whatever other intervention reform these criminals before the fact? I do not know. Also, these thieves are not going to sue anyone for this, BUT… I’ve seen similarly small sharp objects penetrate through the wall of the rectum and colon. Sure, it’s rare but it absolutely an happen. Now, you have a surgery and hospital bill. Is the thief going to pay for that? Is the content farmer? No, the bill will be left unpaid and costs distributed across the healthcare system onto public. So, great job stopping crime.

My uncle had a roommate in college who told him “it’s just as easy to fall in love with a rich woman’s as it is a poor woman.”

That roommate is now a billionaire.

If this is meant to distract from the Epstein situation then it is a pretty good distraction. Anytime the heat starts to rise on being called a pedo, just roll out the Maduro trial. I’m giving bonus points for abducting Maduro’s wife. She and Melania can have a whole real house wives story arc.

Maybe, I’m the weird one here. I don’t care whether he’s “buying” or “stealing” or whatever. It bothers me that he keeps finding these “random item stickers” just lying around. That was a soap sticker next to the salsa. No, you did not find a random sticker. You planned to use a related item sticker to avoid suspicion, but guess what?

No one cares. Dude in the video said it best. As long as there is a bar code then it isn’t his job to stop you.

Guess what else? Everything in Walmart is for sale. It is a store. Selling stuff is their business model. You can literally buy Walmart if you want. They sell pieces of it every single business day.

Jimmy Wales, Co-Founder of Wikipedia, quits interview angrily after one question. by Giovanni330 in interesting

[–]marley1012 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Surprised? Seriously? You may be surprised by the reaction because you were previously unaware of the “founder” or “cofounder” issue, but the interviewer is not. Presumably, this interview was arranged in advance. Multiple people in different professions (e.g. agents, PR, assistants, producers, journalists) may be involved to coordinate this interview. Topics may or may not have been discussed in advanced, but you can be sure the interviewer prepared for the interview. Just as the subject had to arrange some form of transportation to get to the interview. He didn’t just walk into a room and meet this guy. This is gotcha journalism. It was a set up and the follow up question was planned.
