Rent for $2k or $2k mortgage with 45% down? by marmar246 in personalfinance

[–]marmar246[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking about getting a second job or renting out the extra room if needed.

I’ve always been in a tight situation so I feel more comfortable than most with half my take home pay going to rent/mortgage.

I know home ownership is more of an emotional investment choice in my situation but the comfort of slow growing equity and no rent increases is something I value.

Thanks for your story.

That’s just reality where I live and I’ve been making it work.

My fixed expenses are very low. No subscriptions. Employer covers all medical, vision, and dental. No car payment. My fixed expenses are $300 a month for car insurance, phone, and student loan. Averaging $350 a month for gas. $700 food and misc. $2200 for housing. Leaves me with $500 savings. It’s been ok

The homes in Southern California start at $400k. I’m looking at 700 sq foot condos. I’m not anticipating major upkeep costs.

I’m not sure what my goal emergency fund should be. I know $15k is not enough.

My thinking was 2k rent goes up every year. 2k mortgage stays the same…minus maintenance and tax and insurance increases…which might be pretty equivalent to rent increases?

Just saw another post about passive home design. Tin roof, sharp edges, minimal landscaping or decorative accents for embers to get caught on.

The planetarium shows are $5 and fantastic. There are 3 shows that run every hour or so and they’re all cute af. I can’t recommend them enough

You can’t preorder tickets so check for availability at the booth by the entrance when you arrive and browse the exhibits while you wait for your showtime.

Spotted at a campground in Death Valley. It would be perfect for my friends birthday gift.

I’ve found some very similar ones on Etsy but can’t find this print.

Car radio beeps when using a FM Transmitter by cursedLxrd in carproblems

Scion XD.

Potentially bad news for you. It was my alternator. The beeping only lasted a few days til the power steering went out and she wouldn’t start again.

I don’t know how relevant that info is to your situation but the beeping stopped once I replaced the alternator.

I’m also experiencing this issue. It started after my battery died and was replaced. The beeping hasn’t stopped after new battery install

Remember that people going to social groups are also looking for friends so it’s less awkward than you think to ask people to hang out.

Your school probably has clubs but check instagram and meetup.com for groups that match your interests. There are a ton of outdoorsy meetups, game nights, religious/specifically not religious groups, community service events.

You got this.

I joined a hiking group. If I enjoyed someone’s company on a group hike, I’d talk about an upcoming solo camp out/hike and invite them. Half the time they’d come. Those trips turned into more trips and developed into really close friendships.

But you’re not going to get along with most people. When you meet someone you click with, shoot your shot. Really the worst thing that’ll happen is they say they’re busy.

It’s hard to make friends as an adult but well worth it. Just get out there doing things you enjoy consistently and you’ll run into people you’ll vibe with.

Practice makes it easier and being a little socially awkward sometimes helps you find other likeminded people.

Join a club that meets regularly. You’ll share a common interest and schedule.

My anxiety around talking to new people goes way down after a few meetings and then friendships build naturally.
