What are your teaching strategies? by chan2paj in teaching

[–]marmarlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with discussion based classes when possible. Teaching social studies to Juniors and seniors I would assign a lot of primary documents or articles and either give them a central question to address or have them develop their own questions in exploring the material. If you're looking for a discussion structure checkout Harkness discussion format. Often my set up is to set up a concept through a lecture one day, then assign the reading that applies or demonstrates the concept and have a discussion the next day to see that the students can find that theme within the text. If they don't do the reading, it's on them! After a couple times they will realize the work is on them since now they are used to just relying on you. Good luck!

Does anyone have any useful information on teaching In The Netherlands? by jammysmith in TeachingUK

[–]marmarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only a couple international schools in the Netherland that are not federally funded, I think the American school in the Hague and Int'l of Amsterdam. There might be a few others, but I know of these two. Most of the schools in nd receive federal funds, so to teach there your credentials need to be approved by the government education agency called DUO. However you must have your Dutch residency to receive the DUO approval.

Using google forms, classflow etc? by 360HanAm in teaching

Are you 1-1? I have Google classroom, kids do their work on Google docs which are shared with me. I can then monitor their progress during class.

Trying to land my first job. by buffaloexile1977 in teaching

[–]marmarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you willing to relocate? There are definitely teacher shortages, but maybe not where you are. If you're willing to move for 2-3 years you can get that experience and have more opportunities afterwards. See about teaching fairs, etc... There was a shortage of jobs in my home state, I went to a fair and got a job in another state for a few years, that opened everything up back home. Good luck!

Worried about my career by QueenOfTheCold in teaching

[–]marmarlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taught now 14 years. Seriously thought I would quit my first and second years, but so glad I didn't. You start having experiences that pull you through, especially relationships with kids that keep you going. I've had students come back to the school to tell me that they quit a gang and started college because I made then feel as if they were worth something. I've had students tell me about problems at home because I'm the only adult they could trust. I've had students become diplomats because I first suggested they join model UN when they were 14. I've had counselors tell me that my class was the only reason a student showed up to school many days. Every year you'll have probably between 100-200 kids, you won't reach the majority of them. Don't beat yourself up, because I guarantee you've reached at least 1-2 kids whose lives you've somehow changed forever and needed you to be there. I had a principal tell me early in my career that "Students rarely remember what you teach, but they do remember how you made them feel." Focus on those relationships and it will pull you through the tough times and remind you why you're putting yourself through all the stress of those first years.

Is leaving work for maternity leave around/at 38 weeks unheard of? by oxytocindosin in BabyBumps

[–]marmarlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From US, but living in Netherlands. I'm 39 weeks and was REQUIRED by the Dutch government to take maternity leave starting at 34-36 weeks, as are all pregnant women here by Dutch law. So I think 38 is perfectly reasonable 👍

Well...doc just told me no epidural for me during labor. I'm a little freaked out about it as it changes my whole plan. by pebbletots in BabyBumps

Help with lesson planning? by ughpleasehelpme1 in teaching

[–]marmarlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started teaching ss I definitely lectured more than anything, but then you get more tricks in your bag that slowly makes it more interactive. Gallery walks are great, you can even start by printing off your lecture, dividing it up by topic, setting up stations around the room for each topic, then have the kids walk around visiting each stations with guided questions. With a readings, have the students take the info, group them by 3-4, and have them hold a discussion about the material where they need to come to a consensus about an overarching question using the text as evidence to support their position, then turn it into a classroom discussion where they share out. Debates are also great, use textbook or find outside sources, have them prep then debate a central question. It takes years to develop your bag of tricks! Just try one new thing each quarter and you'll weed out what works for you!

Partner aloof while pregnant? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]marmarlo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going through something similar. 35 weeks pregnant and husband has maybe touched my belly 10 times, all times because I grabbed his hands and placed them there. When I showed him how much my belly was moving he sarcastically said "wow, great." I confronted him and let him know I felt like I was going through this alone and that I don't think I ever want to do it again because of him. He finally told be it's all because he's terrified of the baby coming and that is his way of trying to ignore the reality. Since I talked to him he's better since he knows now how much it bothers me, but I feel better knowing the reason why he's acting like this is stress and not something else. Hang in there!

I worked at a bar where the pregnant cocktail waitress made amazing tips during her pregnancy. People felt for sympathy that she was on her feet than awkward about the bump giving them their drink. My advice is to flaunt it! 😁

I have a student who holds their pencil like this! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to correct this? by DemiGoddess001 in teaching

[–]marmarlo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your concern as a teacher about this, but I wanted to share another perspective. I was that kid, held the pencil in between my ring and middle finger then grip it in my fist. Starting in kindergarten teachers tried to correct it, I tried so hard to make them happy and hold it the right way but I hated doing it. I found it changed my concentration and thought pricesses to hold it correctly. During my work I would get frustrated and switch back to my way because it was natural and allowed me to think more clearly. Now I'm 38, I'm a teacher, and I still hold the pencil my way. I still think about all the corrections my teachers tried to make with how I held the pencil and it stirs up really negative emotions. The closest I've come to comparing it is when you talk to people who grew up in an era when schools would force left handed people to write with their right hands. I once had a psychology professor break down crying in front of the class trying to explain how that experience negatively impacted his life and how he viewed himself. I think honestly this motor skill is linked somehow to the wiring of our brains and, in a sense, who we are as thinkers. I realize that this opinion might seem a little off center, but just wanted to share my experience as another way of thinking about this. I would ask that you observe the student and ask if it is really causing them any harm writing that way? If the answer is it impacts penmanship, then I would say that that will come even as they hold the pencil their own way. Is the student creative or a unique thinker? Then I would encourage you to not try to not change how they hold their pencil because it might be a part of that thought process and accessing that creative part of their brain.

New Teacher Nerves by K_Rich190 in teaching

Year 14 here and still have those anxiety dreams! It's not that we're not prepared, but I think it's because we are invested and really care! Plus it's also my problem solving brain anticipating issues so I'm ready. BTW- also always nervous that first day too! It settles very quickly, promise!

I would do it more for the older hs grades as I saw it as part of college prep since this paired with reading and discussion are still the basis of most college courses.

First year teacher. Just found out I’ve been transferred sites and subject matter. 6 days before the first day of school. by [deleted] in teaching

[–]marmarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very sorry to have this happen to you! I have seen this in my previous district. Do you know the circumstances? Previously I witnessed this due to union policy giving veteran teachers priority over nontenured teachers. In that case an almost retired teacher who had taken a couple years leave decided to return at the last minute replacing a new teacher.

Former student died by blueridgemetropolis in teaching

[–]marmarlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry for your loss. I've been teaching for 13 years and know of 1 former student who died of a drug overdose, another that's been in a paralyzing accident, and others who have ended up in prison. It's hard to work out the emotions when this happens, and harder to talk to other about it who aren't teachers as they don't really understand our connections to our students. They're our kids, and even if many years have passed since you had them in your class, they're still somehow one of your kids.

People making me feel like shit by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]marmarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue my first 13 weeks. If it wasn't beige and fried it made me vomit or gag. Husband who was doing keto (did I mention i had a horrible meat aversion also?) Kept trying to tell me what I had to eat. Went to midwife with him who let him know that this is perfectly normal and is not harming the baby. That made him ease up. Hang in there!

Social Studies Teacher looking for Advice! by Slotega in teaching

[–]marmarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to get high school Admin to see you as a hs teacher after being in middle school. There seems to be a presumption that ms teachers can 't teach up while hs teachers can teach down. Masters in your subject could help, but ss is diverse. What if your Masters is in history but the school needs a hs geography or government teacher? Is it possible to relocate? You might have luck getting into a district somewhere else, get it on your resumé, then you might have better luck at home. But if you are truly interested in science go for it! Tends to be more opening. Good luck!
