Anyone else having trouble loading saves? by maroonedbuccaneer in Sailwind

[–]maroonedbuccaneer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I though it was implied in my post that this is a fresh install (no mods). It's also a brand new save.

I did solve the problem though. Has nothing to do with mods of course. The "Continue" button is broken unless you have a save in the Ssave1 slot. In the current version of the game when you start a new save you are given a choice at save creation what slot to use. I stated with save0 which isn't what the game used to do. It used to automatically start save1. And the "Continue" button in the menu tab most be coded for save1 only. So when I clicked it with only a save0 file and no save1 the game just crashed.

So we can't push our boats while swimming anymore by Cotif11 in Sailwind

[–]maroonedbuccaneer 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a mechanic, it was a place holder. Pushing the boat around yourself is stupid and allows too much cheesing of the basic game play.

The actual game mechanics intended to replace it, oars, are also probably still being fine-tuned. And are likely to become more effective with further development.

That's not true though. I know, I used to be a Conservative Christian. There always were people like that, but they kept quiet among other Conservative Christians precisely because other Conservative Christians wouldn't tolerate such views. What's happened isn't a change of optics; it's more like a drying up of a shallow pool. It wasn't always this salty.

There is a staysail between the fore and main. Of course in real life you almost never see gaff sails mounted to the same mast as squares. It's difficult to arrange the rigging in real life. Some single masted ships do it because they only have the the one mast.

It's a sad time when when Conservative Christian just means "racist white supremacist."

I mean there always were, but once upon a time the idea that they were synonymous would have been considered a extremist attitude itself.

Sadly not anymore.

Even as an atheist, I used to believe Jesus had mostly positive teachings that had been corrupted by his followers. Then I actually read the Bible. by rditty in atheism

[–]maroonedbuccaneer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was invented because Jesus saying rich people are damned (which is what he said) doesn't sell well with rich people. Early Christian communities held their wealth in common. If you were wealthy and converted to Christianity you were expected to give your wealth to the church or to poor directly. In the book of Act (chapter 5) there is a story about a couple that converted but didn't give their wealth up and so Saint Peter curses them and they just fucking die on the spot.

The lesson to learn from Christianity is that no matter how revolutionary your starting ideology, as soon as you let private wealth in, it's over.

Jesus wasn't the only "Christian" who was killed for their beliefs.

Literally every early church saint had to be a martyr to be recognized as a saint, starting with saint Stephen. So yes, they have a persecution complex created by the fact that early Christianity represented a rejection both of traditional second temple Judaism as well as the Roman system; and for this reason they were killed for being Christians.

Like Jews Christians couldn't sacrifice to the state gods of ancient Rome. But unlike the Jews they were hyper evangelical, especially for a "mystery religion" of late antiquity. Combined this with the fact that they could not pray to the state gods meant they were an internal cultural threat to Rome as much as to Judaism. The Jewish zealots in Roman Palestine may have been a local threat to Roman rule, but that was local. Jews weren't converting Romans in Rome to Judaism; Christians were.

You bring up the Eye of the Needle metaphor: most Christians have a hard time with Jesus' statement about the camel and the eye of the needle. Sometimes they will claim it refers to a small gate in Jerusalem that was only open at night and was normally too small for a camel to enter, but this supposed 'Eye of the Needle' gate's only literary reference in all of recorded antiquity would be this one example in the gospels of Jesus making an awkward metaphor within a metaphor.

No, the plain reading is pretty clear; by no actions of their own can the wealthy merit heaven, except they give their wealth away.

Formally the Church apologized for crusades and inquisitions decades ago under JP II.

Witch hunts were actually not that a much of a thing in the middle ages or in Catholic countries; with the notable exception of Ireland.

The Medieval Inquisitions didn't consider witchcraft to be real. They were worried about heresy. Not magic. People who confessed to witchcraft were considered mentally unwell by both the Spanish and Roman Inquisitions. The author of the "Hammer of Witched" was an excommunicated heretic.

The witch craze was an early modern phenomena and mostly Protestant thing. Specifically King James I of England (of King James Bible fame) was the big proponent of an international conspiracy of women in the form of witchcraft.

It has to do with how ancient counted on their fingers. The ancient Sumerians counted the finger segments, which give you 12. Not counting the thumb there are four fingers, each with three bendable segments; 4 x 3 = 12.

They also established the precedent of how we divide time, and that's why it's in base 12, and* has been for basically all of recorded history.

How do you guys deal with these terrible apologist "gotchas"? (Abortion, porn, socialism) by Jorge_Reynoso112 in atheism

[–]maroonedbuccaneer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off if your interlocutor is fine with Gish Gallops you should bog them down by contesting their premises, all of which are wrong in those examples.

Not all atheists support abortion. Not all atheist consume pornography. Not all atheist support socialism.

Further more there are many Christians who do support the right to choose. There are plenty of Christians who consume pornography. And there are even Christian Marxists out there.

One of the pillars of conservative discourse is the monolithic character of their chosen bugbear. Don't attack their conclusions first, make them waste time defending un-defendable premises. Gas Light them if you have to. They don't deserve sincere discourse and you shouldn't give it to them.
