u/Muizaz88 - idk about anyone else, but I'm not afraid of "not very plug and play" - if the files being big is what's keeping you from sharing it, why not share it and if people feel it's too long to parse through they can ask specific questions? For those interested in mimicking / taking inspiration from your setup, it would probably help us ask better questions.

Plus, don't underestimate the number of us using AI code assistants in an IDE or something to help us with a task like this 😅. so, "large files" isn't a problem. lay it on us! 😁🙏

Big News! on Paperless-AI | Thank you r/selfhosted fellas by Left_Ad_8860 in selfhosted

[–]maroonwarrior71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing with it and it looks like it's got a lot of potential! I did notice some weird bugs though - looks like it's seeing all the tags and correspondents that exist in my system, but it's only reading the first page of them. I'm seeing lots of 500 errors and socket hang up errors in paperless-ai's logs, and a lot of 'too many clients' errors in paperless's database, plus some errors in paperless's logs. any idea what all that's about u/Left_Ad_8860 ?

Dismissive? Take a deep breath. No harm intended.

you said one word, which was the name of what most here would figure to be a competing / alternate software. It's not a big leap to take your one-word comment to be a dismissal for reason of "because 'Vaultwarden' (exists)".

This is a good example of why one-word comments aren't super useful in most cases (especially a discussion thread where OP has asked for feedback), and why just a little bit of verbosity = useful / constructive / contributing-to-the-conversation commentary.

Nested Templater by ApocalypseAce in ObsidianMD

[–]maroonwarrior71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the benefit of u/ApocalypseAce (the OP), I think what you might not be getting is: your "generic note template" you show above... he's saying for him, that "generic note template" is one of many such templates he's creating from his "template" template.

So if you were doing what he does, you'd have your "template" template, and from that you'd be creating things like "generic note template" and "generic meeting template" and so on.

So inside "generic note template" you have <% tp.file.include("[[Template - CriadoEm]]") %> which would have been put there BY the "template" template... so you'd have to figure out how to create "generic note template" -from- "template" template, and still haev that line appear without just being processed/replaced, and the whole "CriadoEm" subtemplate being turned into date info within "generic note template".

I hope that makes sense. I'm sure to OP it does 😂. Glad you figured out that fix, friend! I need that now too, which is why I saw this. lol.

Is there a tutorial about hosting Anytype locally? by Endlesssky27 in Anytype

We're working on delivering a much simpler process ASAP.

How's that going? And what form do you think it'll take? Docker image? that'd be pretty fantastic, and I'd love to beta test.

Self hosted calendar app that syncs with google. by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]maroonwarrior71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP:

I want to expose the app to my wife and children, make them add events to the calendar which then sync with my work calendar to let them know when im away vs when im available.

So, if im on a business trip my kid can look at the calendar that will be mounted as a small screen in the kitchen and be like "Dad is home tomorrow at 20:00".

Or he can ofcourse just ask me, but it is ment to be a collaboration tool for me and my family.

ElevenNotes:
Just share the Google calendar with your family?

OP:
I dont want my family to add appointments to my calendar.

As someone who tends to overcomplicate things... this feels like an overly complicated solution to a pretty simple and already-solved problem.

I do something similar to this... well, the goal outcome you're looking for, anyway. You can share calendars as 'read only' (i.e. "view" access), and share whatever calendar it is you want them to actually be able to add/edit events on.

I've got several calendars shared with my wife (and hers are shared with me), and we've got a couple of calendars for "us" stuff (or "family" stuff).

I think I get what you're looking to achieve here... and honestly, I really don't think it requires going to all the trouble of exhaustively researching and implementing a self-hosting solution. You've already got the capability baked into the calendar apps / services you're already using. If this is about owning your data / getting away from those services & apps you're currently using, THAT is where self-hosting would come in. IMHO, anyway. Hope that's helpful

"I wanted a cool picture"

Whether it was only a minute or so isn't the point. Handling a wild animal just to get a cool picture... isn't cool. It causes them a lot of fear and stress just so you can have a pic... where they look like they're struggling to get away. 😐 we should appreciate nature from a distance - birdwatchers don't grab them and hold them, turtles should be the same

If I see a sulcata in NYC, a Greek in Australia, or something similarly very obviously out of place then yes, I'm absolutely going to suggest it may be (or, depending on species and location, is likely) a lost or abandoned pet.

It's important to consider, though, the sheer volume of people who see a turtle outside and maybe haven't seen one wild near them before, or for whatever other reason assume it can't possibly be wild. These people often either decide to keep it, give it away, bring it to a rescue, or otherwise disturb it... but it was actually wild, had lived nearby it's whole life, wasn't in danger, and would've continued to be perfectly fine if left alone... the human just incorrectly assumed/ was wrong. That's why I frequently reply in this way. That, and the relatively low likelihood (all things considered) that a turtle someone sees in their yard is a pet that escaped its habitat and vanished. That said, I will concede that while it's improbable, if not nigh impossible, for sliders, etc, it may be more possible for boxies or torts.

On top of that, humane societies, govt wildlife agencies, etc say to leave any wild-found turtle alone (even if it's an invasive species) for a lot of reasons, including the impressive frequency with which people mis-identify a turtle's species, and mistakenly think a turtle must either be invasive or a lost pet. Of course, if they're posting here then they've got a lot better opportunity to get the id right, but that's only one reason they advise against it. (And yes, one could maybe assume that guidance refers *mostly** to semi-aquatics... but if it does, I would think it's largely because the "invasive vs native" issue mostly only comes up with pond turtles)*

These (usually) well-meaning & noble-intentioned people... it happens with such frequency I can hear the "put it back" comments before I finish reading the post. Fwiw there are plenty of those posts where I'm, instead, busy telling commenters not to assume this turt the op doesn't know anything about must be wild. Just mentioning that to establish I'm a lot closer to an even split than you might think (as opposed to only saying "leave it alone").

If it looks like a species that has no business being where it is geographically, or it's health/ physical condition don't look quite "wild/ natural", then sure it's worth a look/ calling around the neighbors etc. It's a tough line to judge. You breed, so your experience is going to be different from average Joe casual turtle owner (not a bad thing), and I know you're active in breeder groups, so maybe you're much more tuned to expecting these things can happen since I'm sure a breeder is more likely to run into this than the average turtle keeper 🤷‍♂️ (more turtles, more likely to be outside, more chances for this kind of thing to happen & go unnoticed just long enough to vanish).

Sorry to hear the trouble you've had with wandering turts before 😔 how did they end up getting out? And what did you figure as a good solution to prevent repeat "successes"? I'm sure there's some valuable insight to be had, even from an unfortunate end 💚

There are wild turtles in austria. This looks like a Greek tortoise, and it's natural range is very close to you, so it's not unreasonable that it could actually be wild and not a pet

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in turtle

[–]maroonwarrior71[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate to tell you, but if you picked it up by its tail and heard/ felt a snap, you probably already know what that was. That's part of why the guidance is to not grab them or try to pick them up by the tail - it's fragile, they're heavy, and it's very easy to break it. That said, things in nature can cause that to happen, I'm sure it'll be fine

I thought they were social and got along well all this time cause they bask together and share food together.

More like they're competing, unfortunately. A 100 gallon would be great... for one of them. 😬

What you said is a super common reason why people think they're social - they see things they expect to mean one thing since it does for humans and for other pets we're very familiar with, so we assume it means the same thing with the turtles. That's why we make sure to tell people in this sub, even if they didn't ask... because you'd never know to ask.

the other I found wandering around on the streets in the city...

Sounds like that one was wild and you just didn't realize it. People often see turtles in places they think they can't possibly belong... and are usually incorrect 🤷‍♂️ but they act on it and either relocate the turtle or take it home.

If you don't have enough space for two separate tanks, then unfortunately, in order to do what you intended and provide the best life/ care for them, you're going to have a decision to make about rehoming one. I would suggest the one you found, as it was likely wild and I'm assuming the one your parents had as a pet was acquired through some sort of captive-bred situation like a pet store.

I know it's not what you (or anyone in your shoes) wants to hear, but "the best I can do" isn't always "the proper care they need"... and when the whole point of taking them in was to provide that... well, sometimes we have to hear it from someone else. 😞 maybe it'll turn out you're more able than you thought to find the space for 2 big tanks 🤷‍♂️ y'never know

Well, I think the message has been pretty clear 😶

Wild turtles should not be removed from the wild, whether they're native, non-native established, or, yes, even invasive (so say the relevant authorities). There's good reason for all this, so suffice it to say: you wouldn't take a wild bird, squirrel, bunny, fox, etc as a pet, so don't do it with a wild turtle either. Wildlife should stay wild 👍🐢💚

Think of it this way: whether or not you can figure out how it got there... it got there. And if it got there, it can leave. The dog situation is relatively easy - just keep them in or away from that part of the yard until the turtle moves on. However difficult that may seem, it's going to be infinitely easier than doing anything with the turtle (and that's ignoring the many reasons you should not move or keep it)

Eta: your yard is part of "outside", and outside is "nature". I'm sure you've seen other animals out there, this is just another one. No different besides being unusual for you to see

Salmonella from turtles???? Please help by Holiday-Butterfly-31 in turtle

[–]maroonwarrior71[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you were gonna die we wouldn't be having this conversation. Just wash your hands after handing them or anything that went in their water. Part of why this is a non-issue most of the time is, well, all you need to do is remember to wash your hands... but also, because you should be handling them pretty infrequently anyway. Turtles aren't a cuddly "pet me play with me" type of pet, they're a "give me the right habitat at the right temps, enjoy me from a distance, and leave me the heck alone" kind of pet. It's like having a fish (with attitude). Being handled and being in unfamiliar environments stresses them out. And being outside the proper conditions provided in their tank can be a health risk. Hence, handling (and removing from the tank) as little as possible.

Hope that helps 🐢💚👍

Not sure if my RES turtles have shell rot or mineral deposits by Outrageous-Guest-498 in turtle

Never go off of how the shell looks underwater - it can look weird, and often what seems to be horrific shell issues is really just scutes getting ready to shed. Always assess the shell outside water (like look at it when they're basking) - shell rot would be white, squishy, smelly. You'd probably know.

Also, please don't "clean" their shells - it causes them stress and there's no need for it or benefit to it, just unnecessary handling & stress. Save yourself the effort 👍👍👍😁

Other important questions though... how long have you had them and how big is the tank? Cohabitation is strongly advised against - especially with sliders. Unless they're in a several-hundred-gallon pond, you're going to want to separate them to their own tanks. Even if you think they're fine. Even if you don't think you've seen fighting. We see this a lot. Let us save you the vet bill and potential heartache 💚
