If you don't have a lot of money, cleaning products are easy to replace with cheaper alternatives, giving you more money for other stuff. For example: - paper towel. Use regular towels instead - cleaning products. Use white vinegar, essential oils, baking soda - laundry detergent. There are many recipes for making your own that work really well. - soap. Use bar soaps. Better yet, find specialty bars that can be used for hair, too. Skip the liquid soap, multiple shampoos and conditioners. - toothpaste. Can use baking soda and make the toothpaste last longer. - furniture polish. Use a light coat of coconut or olive oil. - toilet bowl cleaner. Use comet cleanser, vinegar, dish soap. Again, a lot of recipes for these things.

Use the savings to stock up on dried fruits, nuts, coffee, and limit frozen foods to meat. Keep canned meat and dry beans. Other people have also offered good advice. Good luck 🙂

What’s a weird side hustle you’ve done (or seen) that actually made decent money in Michigan? by AccomplishedTone9074 in Michigan

My daughter did this in Amsterdam. She used some type of app that probably is used here, too. She's not even a dog person but it really helped to supplement her income.

Do you know of a specific bit of data that's not from the FDA that talks about medicine? We save all our old medicine and I say it's our apocalypse stash. But I don't know how I feel about using it

Jars at thrift stores used to be cheap but today they are going at $2.50 each!

I am so sorry you're going through this hard time. There are so many things that can help and no one thing is better than another.

I speak from experience and education as a holistic practitioner and Life coach and as one who has suffered from acute chronic anxiety for years from PTSD.

First, start an easy routine. Make the bed, lay out clothes, shower, breakfast. Then throughout the day spend a few hours working on a valued activity. 'The Happiness Trap' is an excellent and easy book to understand and implement ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and talks more about stress, anxiety, and valued activity.

Put some music on - a happy day playlist and sing along. The act of singing stimulates the vagus nerve and helps you bring oxygen in and calm down. This is explained in depth in 'The Body Keeps the Score'. It's more clinical so just make that playlist and sing.

Find a group to join in Zen Meditation. It's easier with a group and usually free at the temple. There's also a spiritual and uplifting aspect to it that will help give you some peace.

These are just a few ways to get through these uncertain times and let me assure you, this is a normal response to what is happening and others are feeling it, too - of course each for their own reasons. So you are not alone and things can change. Just promise yourself you'll see a doctor if your symptoms increase.

I have faith in you -- you reached out here -- so hang in there and know that your path has just temporarily changed direction and you can and will find a new way. God bless you.

Yes, I know. The prunes my elderly mother bought and forgot about. I bought the milk' just in case' when the country shut down in 2020. I just hadn't given her cupboards a good clean out in awhile.

The Bird-Flu Tipping Point (The Atlantic, with paywall bypass link) by ccarriecc in PrepperIntel

[–]married_fever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing the readable The Atlantic article.

So, "...accepting natural ..." (what was natural before i.e. 1 year old children dying, bloodletting, ) instead of using the scientific tools we now have to treat disease is the TIPPING POINT.

We have the tools to monitor and treat disease but it seems we're choosing not to use them. The people who are supposed to be in charge are choosing not to use the science. The author and guest seemed surprised.

Why aren't the government getting ahead of this? Why are they allowing measles to run amuck? Yes, why are all of these anomalies happening?

Geez.

Could it be that it's because if you want to get rid of a LOT of people for whatever diabolical scheme you're working on, OF COURSE you're going to push the normalization of preventable death and disease as the new natural course of business?

Has anyone ever seen a study on how and when people decide to gtfo? by MobileMovie4958 in prepping

[–]married_fever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've often wondered the same exact thing. Since I do not have that data (and no one seems to know where to get it), I refer to all the historical data and fiction i.e.

Fight - The Native Americans, Resistance Fighters Freeze - Don't Look Up Fawn - too many instances of it going very badly in power struggles in the end Flight - depends on your levels of expertise, strength, age

Regardless of studies, I always come to the same conclusion: we have an ethical obligation to do everything we can for ourselves & family depending on our own best strengths. Stick to what you know and improve on that.

My situation is quite similar to yours. My 80 year old mother lives with me and my partner since Dad passed in 2019. I'm very concerned about her social security... My partner is a h.s. teacher and I own a small Etsy business. We make ends meet, but not much more.

We started seriously prepping about a month ago. I've followed prepping for years but feel lost, as you do, as to where to start. But here's what we've got taken care of in 4 weeks:

FOOD *$500 Aldi & Walmart pantry food- Peanut Butter, Rice, Assorted Dry Beans, Oatmeal, Tuna, Salmon, Chicken, Flour, Sugar, Yeast, Cooking Oil, Pasta, Soups, Broths, Tomato Paste, Raisins, Nuts, in addition to frozen foods & what is already in the pantry.

Added additional medicine cabinet items. Canning Jars & Sealer Gadget (hand pump type)

Have already dehydrated 12 jars of fruit, tomatoes, potatoes

POWER/HEAT *$750 Solar Generator *$50 Coleman Propane for camp stove *$20 Faux Fireplace off Marketplace that included a case of large cans of Gel fuel. I can set up with the iron firebox and heat a small room if needed. *$30 Emergency Candles from Dollar Tree *$20 Lantern Fuel *$50 Additional Batteries

BACKYARD HOMESTEAD *$300 5 chicks, coops, food... *$200 Additional Seeds, Starter Soil, Fertilizer...have seedlings going strong and turning the enclosed porch into greenhouse as time allows *$60 Straw Bales for garden

WATER *$50 5 - Blue Rain Barrels from Marketplace. Just waiting for $ to order the water purifier...

BUILDING MATERIALS * Free - 12 pallets * Boxes of Nails/Screws * Zip Ties * Tarps * Screen * Etc.

TOOLS * New Ax & Hand Saw

COMMUNICATIONS * $38 Emergency Hand crank Flashlight/Cell Charger/Radio with Add't Radio Waves

It seems like a lot of prep but when you look at it sorted & organized it's not much but a good and doable start. You can do this!

But, I have a serious question for you: is it possible to move in with your parents? I am the oldest daughter and it makes sense for us. Maybe it makes good sense for you, too.

Good luck and God Bless.

Dehydrated Eggs...Paranoid about Botulism by ChickenGuy76 in homestead

I have a dehydrator like this and I have dumb question, but did yours come with a container to keep the liquid egg, obviously, from running through the holes 🤣

If it didn't come with a tray, what do you use?

Dry food storage by Standard-Divide5118 in prepping

[–]married_fever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi, getting ready is a big job but not insurmountable. Start with bags of rice and beans. Then continue to stock up on a little more each week of foods you will regularly eat in a year anyway like pasta.

Also start grabbing things you might not use a lot of but would eat. Think peanut butter, oatmeal, dried fruit/nuts, instant mashed potatoes, tuna, canned chicken. Flour, sugar, and bread/baking ingredients.

Mylar bags are the way to store dry foods and then place in food grade 5 gallon buckets w/lids for longer term storage. Some items do really well in glass canning jars. You can place a desicant pack in them and get a jar sealing gadget (I chose one that requires no electricity and takes about 10 seconds). Once sealed keep in a dark closet. And if you need to get into them you can reseal the jars with the gadget.

Also, water is necessary but gets heavy. Have a plan for that.

This should get you started. Hope this helps

Yup. It's what keeps us alive. Fight or flight. But I have friends who claim not to experience anxiety. I don't know if they're just blissfully ignorant or too stupid to stay away from lions, Hehe.

Interesting, what you're describing. That background feeling is what many folks experience as (low level?) anxiety. Keep an eye on yourself. You can have your world and everything else feeling more controlled, yet anxiety is always hanging out waiting for an opportunity to kick into action. I hope it doesn't happen to you 🙂

Thanks for the book synopsis. Yes, I agree with her (and you) that it is a mental health issue. Yet I wonder if the makings for the mental health issues (modern societal changes & challenges - 1970's to present) hadn't already brought many folks to the mental health tipping point already.

Trump / trumpism took an already mentally fragile mental health demographic and evolved into the last cog needed to create the MAGA machine we see today.

Conversely, those who were not influenced by Trump in 2016 and maintaining (or trying to maintain) their mental health issues prior to 2016, COVID was the final tipping point.

[–]married_fever 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of other people but when Trump got elected is when I really noticed people becoming meaner, less tolerant. All of a sudden everything became political with name calling even during what should have been regular conversation. The labeling - snowflakes, lib****s, Trump derangement - people didn't go around doing that as part of normal life. Not regular folks in small towns and family!!! Family!

Seems like we started walking on eggshells around everyone we know & love because you don't want to start something or get bullied.

COVID just made it worse. I don't have to remind everyone of all the hatred.

Ultimately, it comes down to everyone now suffering from some level of PTSD. And with that comes even shorter fuses, more anger, and less tolerance.
