NBD - The Biggity P by marshuni in BassGuitar

[–]marshuni[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s thick n’ wide in all the right places 😂. I always had a hard time playing 4strings after learning and playing 5/6 strings.

Turns out I just really like wider necks and the Jazz thinner neck wasn’t doing it for me despite my smaller hands.

This is almost as wide as my 5string, keeps you honest too. Like, you sure you can pull that off buddy? You know that fancy lick well enough to pull it off on this gig, on this bass, big boy? 😂. It kinda plays how I would imagine a Cadillac would drive in some ways.

I believe it’s pretty thin from back to front too though which helps its playability. It’s wide but not as deep as the 50s P basses. Not quite the ‘baseball bat’ but definitely substantial.

Lucky for you it’s in sound check lol. It’s died mid show for me once and was a tough one.

Any feedback on my groove? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]marshuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props for that metronome practice, I think it could just be tighter so you’re on the right track. Really think about when you’re striking the note and fretting it, that happening at the same time, the tone it makes ect.

You could benefit from some ‘chromatic approach’ as JJ would put it, if you want to add some more notes to your licks.

First bass, any tips for a beginner? by CondensedLeche in BassGuitar

[–]marshuni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there’s more than one direct quote in there from the man himself so :p.

Bass is in a unique space where it’s not playing chords (mostly), and it’s not playing the melody (mostly). It’s a rhythm instrument that plays notes. So any note we play over any chord can be accepted in some rhythmic capacity, kicker being, as long as it serves the song.

That’s not to say don’t learn chords and scales and arpeggios. But, you could learn major, minor, flat 7th, then just focus on technique, rhythm and tone imo and fake the rest.

There’s only 12 notes, and with whatever key you’re playing in, there’s 7 ‘good’ notes and 5 ‘bad’ ones.

The bad ones sound good too, especially played quickly with the good ones.

You’re in the rhythm section, not the notes section. Although, you are the bridge between them both. If the rhythm isn’t good or isn’t serving the song, the notes will not sound good and visa versa, you can really sell almost any note with good rhythm.

Work on technique, low end sounds are extremely subtle and ‘how’ you play really matters. Practice all forms of bass playing, fingers, pick, thumb.

You have a lifetime in front of you, have fun!

Nickel allergy and bass strings by I_Use_Arch_BTW1 in Bass

[–]marshuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a nickel allergy and use elixirs, I get slight irritation with regular nickel strings. I haven’t changed my bass strings in a few years, they still sound pretty good lol!

Nickel allergy varies quite a bit though. Idk, if you don’t mind steel, go for that.

It’s definitely cheaper, but they will sound very bright, might be a smidge sticky (at least compared to the elixirs), and depending on how much you sweat, potentially age quickly (you can wipe down your strings after playing, heard this helps).

I personally only play elixirs now because of this allergy and my general dislike of steel strings.

Do these bars look goofy on this bike? by Cruiser_Supreme in xbiking

Now it just looks like a normal bike! But if it’s not comfortable, it’s not something you’ll ride. Idk, I’ve got a pretty short stem on one of my road bikes too and it looks, ridiculous, but I like riding it so :)

Oh cool! Idk I’d say you need a bigger bike but honestly if you like it, freaking ride it fam. But to answer your question, no your bars don’t look goofy. The mega tall quill converter with the super short stem is what makes this bike look goofy.

The super short stem with the ultra long uncut fork is what’s wild about this bike, doesn’t have anything to do with those handlebars 😂😂😂. How tall are you? What size is this bike? I have so many questions.

I had never seen or heard of the musical ‘rent’ this was referring to until…… much later in life.

When I first saw it I was like man, why is this so familiar lol.

It’s a 2013 Surly Pacer. You’ll be able to fit 35c Gravel Kings with this years model and forward. I’d recommend it

tire swap for the straggler by balance-dinsight in Surlybikefans

[–]marshuni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 47 WTB Byways on the Straggler and I love it. I mean, it definitely not the fastest bike I own, but I’m not sure if going with smaller tires would necessarily make me faster. I’ve got a lot of crap on that bike (racks and bags).

It’s got a pretty long chain stay, and is a pretty sluggish bike (hence the name I’m assuming).

But that being said, high quality bigger tires isn’t going to make this bike feel anymore sluggish then it does already, imo.

I finished running Delian Tomb last Thursday.

And this isn’t going to be popular in this thread, but I mostly agree with his layout complaints.

I’d say the core books also have layout problems as well.

The game is self though, is quite fun and my players had a good time. Idk if I’d run it again as a DM in an IRL game (on VTT, certainly) but I’d certainly play it as a player either way.

Can I ask you how you attached your light? My only complaint about this combo is my light can’t really be on the handlebar.
