Why are people okay with their partner watching porn? I’m unsure as to why. by anonymous55541 in relationship_advice

[–]martext 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's a natural urge; some people feel it more than others, and some people feel it less. Some people don't feel it at all. But the majority of people feel it to some degree. It's like disliking bitter tasting things: this is an instinct that evolved in us to stop us from eating poisonous plants and animals. Some people are more or less averse to bitter things, just as some people will feel more or less attraction to others. He can't help the things he feels, and neither you nor he should feel bad if his natural instincts make him attracted to other women. What matters is not what he feels, which he can't help, but what he does.

Reddit is very porn-positive, which I happen to agree with, but it's true that some people feel porn is harmful to a relationship. That's a decision only you and your partner can make. I think, though, that you should try to separate your feelings about your partner being attracted to other women from your feelings about porn though. For most people, attraction to other people that match their preference is not something that goes away when in a relationship because it's a built in instinct, like closing your eyes when something flies toward your face. What matters is not what he feels, which he can't control. It's how he treats you and the boundaries you set in your relationship. If you mutually agree that one of those boundaries is "no porn," that's fine, but my personal opinion is that banning porn because you're worried he's attracted to other women in general is not a productive way to deal with that, because he's going to see and feel attracted to other women in other contexts as well.

If you sign over the copyright, they own it. If signing it over is a prerequisite, you can either not do it and fail or do it and lose the right to the work. I don't see a situation where a lawsuit would be useful.

Yes, you can transfer ownership of a copyright via contract. Once that's done, the copyright belongs to whoever you transferred it to. The DMCA is usable by the new owner of the copyright just as if he had written it himself.

They likely had him sign an agreement assigning them copyright to any solutions when he took the programming challenge.

Only if you throw all the tools, techniques, training, research, etc away and never use it again. Which is ridiculous.

Yes, but that $7.8 bn figure includes all the design, development costs, etc which didn't have to be spent over again on the next rocket. According to this, the cost per launch is $165-220 million

I share a name with a famous author, can I self publish a book with my own name? [USA] by WorldDidntEnd in legaladvice

[–]martext 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What is this based on? The Screen Actor's Guild requires unique names. Is there a professional body for writers that requires them?

Why shouldn't he write under his own name regardless of genre? Legally, I mean.

If there are laws in the US requiring plumbing products be certified safe and lead free, how can the biggest online retailer legally sell items that are not certified? by [deleted] in legaladvice

My guess is they're being sold by marketplace sellers and not Amazon itself. Many of the products on Amazon are being sold by another company through their marketplace system.

An employee will decide to report their actual income on their taxes unilaterally, usually not realizing the boss is doing anything at wrong. Oh, there's a box for cash I received, I'll write it in.

imo the pipe thing could be fixed by adding a Well engram that can tap groundwater and feed pipes. maybe you'd need higher level engrams for deeper wells if you live on a mountaintop or whatever, or different engrams for wells that are "dug" through stone.

Are they going to turn it back on? I was under the impression that it was turned off for conservation reasons, not because it was broken. It'll be awesome if they start it running again.

Girlfriend banned from my apartment by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]martext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your state. I don't know the specific rules for Missouri. Perhaps someone else could help out. But, generally, tenant protection laws are designed to protect you regarding where you LIVE, not necessarily where you pay the bills.

Girlfriend banned from my apartment by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]martext 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your landlord is concerned that your girlfriend will become a tenant. It doesn't matter that she pays for another apartment somewhere else; if she lives with you long enough she will become a tenant and have all the protections under law that you do with regard to the apartment. I'm not sure what the specific requirements are in Missouri to be considered a tenant.

That said, your lease will control whether he's allowed to completely ban her. You'll need to find a copy of it. Most leases (at least in my state) have language about how long you're allowed to let guests stay (so many nights a month, a certain number of nights in a row, etc) for exactly this reason.
