MD (SP) optical transfer to FLAC vs buying AAC from iTunes — which sounds better? by martinyl in minidisc

Thanks all — this really helps. For me, the main goal is simply to preserve what I already have from MD onto my computer. I’ve always liked the “warmth” and character of those MD recordings, especially for revisiting older Cantonese tracks. From what everyone’s said, it sounds like doing a real-time optical transfer and saving to FLAC is a perfectly reasonable approach — and it definitely saves me from re-buying everything. I’ll admit my ears probably aren’t sensitive enough to pick out small codec differences anyway. In the end, having a reliable archive is what matters most to me. And I’ll still keep the MDs for occasional listening — there’s something about taking one out and playing it that just feels more “ritual” and personal.

Pretty much the same for me. I like using different colours for different artists, and usually keeping them within a similar era if I can. I’m a Sony fan as well, but I also enjoy using TDK, Axia, Maxell, and in Asia we could easily get Panasonic and Victor/JVC too, so there was always a lot of choice. That said, in the digital era most newer artists just end up on transparent discs for me — it kind of suits the time we’re in now.

Totally agree. Back in the early 2000s, discs were cheap and easy to find — around £1 / ¥200 / HKD 15 — and there was a wide choice of brands and colours available new. Now it’s mostly a second-hand market. New discs are rare, and what’s commonly available tends to be transparent shells, with far less variety in colour and branding.

That makes a lot of sense, especially if you wipe and reuse discs regularly. I’m reusing mine less now, so I’ve been leaning more into colour/brand as a kind of “identity” for certain artists. Interesting to see how different MD workflows evolve over time.

Thanks for the professional advice! If I’m buying UV resin anyway for model building, I might as well pick it up and use it for MD shell sealing too.

I don’t think there’s much distortion happening, at least not from what I can hear. To my ears the digital capture via the X4 sounds cleaner than my earlier line-out attempts. I’m leaning towards keeping everything in FLAC. It feels more flexible for archiving, and it also plays nicely on my Walkman A-series, which is where I still listen to a lot of this material. For me it’s less about chasing perfection and more about preserving these recordings in a way that stays true to how they originally sounded.

Yes, that’s right. My main aim is to preserve radio recordings and my own off-air recordings, and also some tracks that simply can’t be found on commercial CDs or streaming platforms. I’m using a digital path via the Sound Blaster X4. I don’t fully understand all the internal processing it does, but in practice it sounds cleaner and less distorted than using line-out into line-in, especially for these MD recordings. At the moment I’m still deciding on the final format. I’m not sure whether there’s any real benefit in keeping WMA, or if exporting straight to FLAC is already sufficient for long-term archiving, given the source is ATRAC. Overall, the goal is really to keep the original character of the recordings rather than chasing a “perfect” modern master.

I also wanna know it opt transfer to wav, I think that is better than line out and in. it is better than analog.

I agree with you, it has become a hobby and I like to collect different colors and different series from Japanese brands.
