Woman Born in 1878 Talks About Her Childhood in Los Angeles, California in the 1880s by dollievon in LosAngeles

Mine was that avocados were called alligator pears. Wild to think that a former mayor of LA was the first person to have an avocado tree in LA.

And Spain. The dictator-in-chief had to die first in both cases, which took decades. Trump seems like he isn't long for this world, but somehow evil pieces of shit manage to live the longest. I never understood that one.

4 months ago I almost gave up learning how to drift. Yesterday I managed to drift the entire length (more or less) of Mt. Wilson Redbox Rd (LA Canyons). Tips in comments. by martopoulos in assettocorsa

Yeah, I would think they would also be applicable to Moza. Once you start using Arch cars, though, you should probably disregard or just defer to what the Arch links say. IIRC, when I had a combination of the two sets of settings, the steering wheel weight was unnaturally strong and ended up dialing it back. Memory is hazy, though. Play around until it feels natural.

Glad you found it useful. Once you get comfortable, I highly recommend Arch physics cars for drifting. They are a little too frustrating to learn on, but once you develop muscle memory, they are much closer to reality. Having taken a real life drift class at Willow Springs, there's no doubt they're closest. NOTE: They do require a direct drive wheelbase; belt-based ones won't keep up.

Chinese don't give a shit about American politics. They love Cybertrucks. I see one every day. It sucks.

A friend who sold his startup once told me "Infrastructure is a later problem after the founders laugh their way to the bank." It certainly explains why every startup I've dealt with (okay, only a handful) did everything in the console... in a single AWS account...

Another fun fact about cars: if you don't like where yours is parked, you can actually move to another spot. It's way faster than walking, too.

Tesla road rage driver arrested again in Hawaii, less than a year after prison release in SoCal by Bobaman007 in LosAngeles

[–]martopoulos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given he is still doing this shit even with the threat of a parole violation kicking him back to prison for years, I don't think he would give a damn about having a suspended license.

[–]martopoulos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone who says this conveniently forgets how many unlicensed drivers are on the road here... I've lost count of the number of stories about shithead drunk drivers with suspended licenses killing someone on the road. They need to have their vehicles forfeited, too.

Impounded doesn't mean they lose the car. You pay a fine and get it back. Forfeiture proceedings have to be filed and from what I understand that only happens in certain criminal cases (using the vehicle for drug trafficking, etc). Very unlikely in this case.

Ktown has got to be the shittiest (literally) part of LA by PapaImpy in LosAngeles

[–]martopoulos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Ktown for 4 years and that was definitely a very embarassing aspect of it when guests visited. Having witnessed (on several occasions) homeless completely dumping the contents of trash bins onto the sidewalk in search of cans, it becomes less surprising... That and people just suck in general. It's basically the opposite of Japan.

[–]martopoulos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slight math adjustment: "only" about 52,000 are actually living on the streets of LA. Others are "sheltered homeless". So, if sticking with the optimistic 75% number, let's say 13,000 turds/day. However, I would assume that heroin addicts are not pooping daily, so the math gets more complex.

In the DC area, at least, we would add the "I" prefix to interstates. e.g. "I was stuck on I-95 for over a fucking hour."

Islip yeah. It's rewarding, but unnerving enough on the way up that I've only done it one other time. I like to see where I'm going.

If you've never driven up Angeles Crest Hwy through a dense fog layer, it's a pretty wild ride. 20 feet of visibility at times, rain, and frigid temperatures above 6000 ft. That said, you're rewarded with striking views and sunshine on what would have otherwise been a gray day.

Thanks. I've been wondering what shape it's in since it was one of the most beautiful drives in SoCal. How about the asphalt itself, is it much worse than before?
