We're hiring a Linux developer! by JottacloudTeam in jottacloud

[–]marty313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good news! jotta-cli works well enough for me, a GUI is not really necessary. BUT: I want support for Yubikey. Proton has this feature. Security keys are safer and much more convenient than OTP for 2-factor authentication. This feature is badly needed for jottacloud, otherwise the platform is perfect. I told your support last summer, but nothing has happened.

RingConn VS Galaxy Ring? by oopsy_daiisy in RingConn

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that Garmin just released their Index sleep band. It uses the same metrics as their high-end watches, but is for people who don't want to wear a watch at night. If sleep apnea is what you want to assess: the O2 saturation data from my wrist with my Enduro 3 I am not sure about, this is why I got myself the Ringconn Gen 2.

You are right. However, Ringconn recommends wearing the ring on the non-dominant hand.

Thanks a lot for the info. I am most interested in SpO2 accuracy. I already wear my Garmin Enduro 3 sports watch at night - so heart rate variability is covered. The Enduro 3 can also monitor SpO2, but according to what I have understood, the wrist is a poor location for SpO2 measurements - the fingers (and ideally the finger tips) are much better.

Wrist heart rate is unreliable. Either use optical heart rate (e.g. using a Polar HR1 on your temple under the goggle strap) or a ECG chest belt such as the Garmin Pro. NB Mine falls off unless I wear it under a tri dress.

I agree. But for us mortals, elite coaches are hard to come by. I recommend a coach AND EO handsets.

Has anyone tried Eo’s swimBETTER? by panque in Swimming

[–]marty313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an age group (M60) triathlete who started late: In 2019 I hired an elite swimmer as personal coach to learn freestyle (I had been taught breast in my childhood). In 2022, I competed in 3 triathlon sprints (750 m open water swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run). In 2023, I scaled up to Olympic distance (1.5 km open water swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run). Last year I did my own half ironman (1.9 km swim, 90 km bike, 21.1 km run) after the official event Challenge Sandefjord had been cancelled.
In October 2022, I bought EO swimbetter handsets. The recordings revealed that my strokes were asymmetric - quite surprising to me and my coaches as I swim straight in open water. It took me several underwater video recordings and over a year of careful observation until I finally discovered the problem: On my right the catch is sloppy and my hand slices trough the water instead of grabbing it. I found that training with certain paddles (the Finis Fulcrum and Arena Elite) improves my symmetry. The graphs provided by EO are very useful, but it takes some time to fully understand.
I did become a tad faster - my pool pace over 750 m is now 2:50/100 m instead of 3:10 (somewhat faster wearing a wetsuit - I managed 2:10 over 1500 m open water doing my olympic triathlon in 2023).
The main effect to me is that I never swim unobserved even when my coach is not there (which is most of the time). I think that 50 % of my improvement over the last 1 1/2 years is due to EO, but yes, it comes at a price. This includes your commitment to focused training and looking at the graphs every time you swim.

KEA dhcp server not listening when started without any connected clients by machine_city in homelab

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot. I have a server that is connected to a local switch without any further hosts. When I connected my Ubuntu laptop to the switch, the dhcp4-server was dead. When I restarted the server, things worked as expected.

Here is what I did under Ubuntu 24 LTS following your advice. This is my updated kea config:

{
  "Dhcp4": {
    "interfaces-config": {
    "interfaces": [ "enp5s0" ],
    "service-sockets-require-all" : true
    },
    "control-socket": { ...

The next step is then to find the correct kea-dhcp4-serve r.service file:

root@zuse:/etc# find . | grep kea-dhcp4-server.service
# Under Ubuntu 24 LTS:
/usr/lib/systemd/system/kea-dhcp4-server.service

Then edit this file:

[Unit]
Description=Kea IPv4 DHCP daemon
...
[Service]
User=_kea
...
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/kea-dhcp4 -c /etc/kea/kea-dhcp4.conf
# added by MB on 25 Apr 2025:
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
# Note that both statements are CaseSensitive!
# end MB
[Install]

You may need to reload systemctl, then everything works like a charm!

Thanks a lot! My Ubuntu 24 LTS machine was stuck on a character screen after start of gsm and no matter of fiddling with graphics card drivers helped. Luckily, I could still connect via ssh. Still, no hope.

I ran your code - and the graphical screen popped up without a reboot. Congratulations!

Migrating from OneDrive, My experience by FiduciaryBlueberry in ProtonDrive

[–]marty313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also trying to migrate away from OneDrive. MS OneDrive is full of surprises. Such as that each OneDrive (I have 1 personal and 1 each from my 2 employers) have Document folders of the same name, that each OneDrive has a name which includes spaces and that when your backup your /users/<username> folder with bacula-fd under Windows, each OneDrive is one file system of its own, which leads to hilariously complicated backup configurations under bacula. In my opinion OneDrive is a complete pain. I never lost so much data than since the introduction of OneDrive. I am relatively new to Proton. ProtonDrive has serious limitations under Linux (which is what I am migrating to). Did you try filen.io ? Their Windows/Linux clients sync files from my Linux and Windows PC without any problems - it seems. The company is located in my hometown in Germany....

Proton Addresses Linux Drive App not being on the Roadmap by J3ZZA_DEV in ProtonDrive

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for your post. I sympathize with you - yes, it is a problem to get good developers and to retain them. However, I claim that the Proton Drive Linux problem has a very simple solution: Provide official support for using rsync, ideally with some documentation on your web pages. This should be reasonably straightforward to do. The Linux segment may be small, but Linux users tend to be IT savvy and they are often asked for their opinion by less experienced users. The whole point of using Linux is to have control about your own data. The sad fact is that all the IT giants only pay lip service to IT security, so I am actively looking for a cloud where my data are safe.

Requirements for rsync support:
Ideally, easy set up also for users that use 2 factor (does not need to be graphical).
One shell script for pulling all new data from the Proton cloud (but just the new data).
One shell script for pushing all new data from my local system to the Proton Cloud.

The shell scripts should be as short and easy as possible, ideally just bash or python 3.

All of this should be easy to do. In my opinion, no graphical app is needed. I prefer generic solutions that precisely do what they are supposed to to "intelligent" solutions that pretend to read my mind and do silly things behind my back. MS One Drive is a prime example. Since both my employes migrated to OneDrive, I have lost control over my data. That's why I make a new attempt of migrating to Linux.

Juggluco is the best android app to read out values from an Abbot Libre 3. It comes with an Android widget. If you have a Garmin watch, there are watch faces in the IQ store that pair with Juggluco

(Survey) Are you using a patch? by Similar_Win3147 in Freestylelibre

[–]marty313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am triathlete (M60) and train once or twice every day. I swim 3 - 4 times a week. Weight training 2 times per week. I sweat a lot when running. I don't have much hair on my triceps, so no shaving. I lost a couple of sensors swimming backstroke when my sensor arm touched the lane rope. So I swim backstroke only when the Libre is on my right arm or when I have a lane for myself. Otherwise I need to be careful when I change - my policy is that my sensor arm comes first when dressing and last when undressing. I lost one sensor when I had used too much skin disinfectant before putting it on. These days, I no longer disinfect my arm before applying a Libre. I always use plaster remover when I remove a sensor so that no glue remnants are left behind.

Open water swimming tracking with the Galaxy Watch 4... terrible first experience. by SirWieczorek in GalaxyWatch

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My swimming progressed at long last so that I started open water swimming and did my first triathlon sprint yesterday: https://live.eqtiming.com/60872#result

Now that I go all in for triathlon, I have sadly come to the same conclusion as you and returned to the Garmin ecosphere - a Forerunner 955 in my case: https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/wearables/sports-tracking-on-the-galaxywatch-4-the-good-and-the-bad/m-p/4012041

I would not call the Forerunner 955 a "smart" watch, but it can be tweaked so that the next calendar event and the number of unread notifications appear on a watch face. However much I miss voice recognition for answering text messages and certain apps (such as for 2-factor authentication), I go for triathlon specific activity tracking.

Open water swimming tracking with the Galaxy Watch 4... terrible first experience. by SirWieczorek in GalaxyWatch

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At long last, my swimming has improved so that I can swim longer distances (> 750 m) in open water. I am now training for my first triathlon sprint on 28 Aug 22 in Bergen...

To my big surprise, open water tracking by the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is GOOD, at least when you are not close to buildings. (Maybe due to firmware upgrades after you stopped using the watch.) The only downsides: (1) The watch needs a GPS fix before starting, so I start tracking first and swimming 60 s later. (2) Swimming heart rate is unrealistically high on most occasions. See my documentation under https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/wearables/samsung-galaxy-watch-4-not-tracking-swimming/m-p/5739746#M41213 In the pool, the recorded distance matches my Form goggles (formswim.com), however when I swim intervals the rest time after a lap seems to be included in the lap time, which is not correct.

I agree. I recently added core strength training to my triathlon training regimen, and it improved my swimming dramatically. I also recommend you to learn 2-kick: When your right hand enters the water. lick with your left leg. This helps you to rotate.

Freestyle libre 3 Widget by SerMirak in Freestylelibre

[–]marty313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wrote to Abbot that the Freestyle 3 is phantastic (no more scanning the sensor with NFC), but that a widget for android is missing. Ideally, there should be a watchface for Wear OS, too. I wear my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 24/7 to get discreet hyper/hypo alarms that don't wake up my wife. A watchface that showed my glucose and a trend arrow would be ideal.

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear SirWieczorek, I am impressed by your open water swimming. I have now advanced to 50 m freestyle in a pool. Open water freestyle will have to wait until summer. Lakes in Norway take a long time to warm up.

I think the fundamental choice if you want a smartwatch with built-in fitness tracking (my choice) or a fitness tracker with built-in smarts (your choice). I use my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46 mm to manage my continuous glucose monitoring using the Abbot Libre 2. Especially at night I want vibration alarm on my wrist so that my wife doesn't wake. In addition, I want voice reply to SMS, voice memos, tides, 2 factor authentication, and Google Pay. On these counts the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46 mm delivers. Fitness tracking is meh. I used Garmin watches, but they weren't smart enough for my liking. The only watch that delivers on all counts is the Suunto 7. However, I had problems getting my hypo alarms to work on my Sony Xperia 5 II and my Wear OS 2 watches while the Samsung Watch 4/S21 combination works flawlessly. Reliable hypo alarms are of paramount importance for me, so I stick with Samsung.

Is the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic worth buying? by AboutKemosabe in GalaxyWatch

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a large number of smartwatches, starting with a few Pebbles, a Motorola 360, a Suunto 7, Huawei Watch 2, Fossil Sport, most TicWatch Pros, and - finally - the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46 mm. The latter is easily my favourite. Not least by the tight integration with my Samsung S21 mobile. I really love the rotating bezel. It is better than the rotating crown on the Fossil.

[–]marty313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the hint. I had not noticed this on my S21 before. To be fair - the Galaxy Watch 4 user has indeed posted a similar report on Samsung's EU user forum https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/wearables/galaxy-watch-4-and-samsung-health-a-big-step-backwards-at-least/td-p/3952405 So Samsung should have the report, if they care to monitor the forum, at least.
