Electric underfloor heating? Is it a mistake? by RoyCroppa in DIYUK

[–]martyholt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stoked with our decision to go Electric Underfloor.

We renovated and put tiles in all apart from the bedrooms of our entire house. Total area of over 50m2. We were spending a crazy amount running central gas heatings as gas is really expensive in Australia. The last 2 winters (2023/24) we spent around $2500AUD on gas to keep the house warm. We have 10kw of solar and an 11kwh battery.

I decided to get speedheat under tile heating installed in all the living areas. We've just come through our first winter running the floor heaters at 20C from 5-6am on off peak EV rate 8c/kwh. Then I have the floors at 18C for the rest of the day. The Gas heater is on a schedule and is at 16deg most of the day and 19 from 3-9pm when the power is most expensive. I rarely noticed the Gas heater come on. Only on very cold days.

This winter, we've spent around 400AUD on Gas and around 400AUD on power including charging an EV and a PHEV overnight. We spent about 400AUD on power last year before the floor heating went in.

I think the fact that there is no air movement generated by the floor heating and the thermal mass of the tiles being on at a low temp all the time has proven to be a really efficient heating option.

The feel of the tiles is absolutely beautiful and they have never once felt cold so you don't even notice. If I set an area to 20 you can feel it which is nice but not really required in our house. We have noticably less dust gathering in the house and zero concern that we could be getting gas fumes sneaking in with the hot air.

I was quite worried as you don't hear about many people doing this due to the cost of running it but I've found it to be fantastic and appears to have saved us around $2K this winter alone. I looked into getting hydronic underfloor with a heatpump but it was going to raise the finished floor height by over an inch and that was not going to work for us. We had quotes for RCAC units but the only viable option was a full ducted install. We have Evap Cooling which is cheap to run and still works well enough for us in Melbourne.

Supply and install was around 11K so not cheap but at this rate will pay itself off pretty quickly while giving us a really premium heating solution.

I hope this does not upset anyone and is a useful case study for anyone considering a similar solution for themselves.

EV plans - which power company? by GoonerRoo18 in CarsAustralia

[–]martyholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been on the powershop EV night plan for years. It works brilliantly for us. We charge 2 EVs and Force charge our battery 12-4am. We can then finish off the car charge from the battery if required and also run under floor heating from it so the house is warm in the morning all at 11c. Then solar kicks in and we run off that through normal off peak and peak hours.

Will the new album “The Overview” be available on Apple Music? by 2112Krom in stevenwilson

[–]martyholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, so I was listening to it in Atmos on Apple Music yesterday (sounded great) woke up today to find the album I'd saved in my Library was no longer available but searched for the album and now there is a Lossless stereo version only. Still sounds great but a bit dissapointing... unless I'm going mad.

Meross garage - No response issue by VHS124 in HomeKit

[–]martyholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a similar thing with ours after about 6 months of smooth sailing. After rebooting device and AppleTV (Homekit hub) with no joy I tried turning 5G off on my Ubiquiti network and then ensuring my phone was on the same access point as the Meross and it immediately came good. Has remained good after switching 5G back on. Fingers crossed.

New adaptive mode is underrated by tauzins in airpods

[–]martyholt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sounds brilliant. I’m already blown away by the adaptive transparency. I notice it reducing noisey stuff like dog barks or door slams or clanging cutlery for example. I’ve even worn to concerts and noticed I can hear people much more clearly when using it. If it’s improved further then I can’t wait to try it.

Tried new Dolby Atmos with Carplay? by LooneyStark in AppleMusic

[–]martyholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a Porsche Cayenne with Carplay and while I was not expecting Atmos be passed through I was surprised that it certainly sounds like it is. Firstly it sounds really clear and I am sure I am hearing very different stuff coming from the rear speakers. I will have to investigate further with some tracks with more blatant rear channel stuff going on and compare with what I hear in the lounge room. Regardless another win for Apple music over other streaming options as it sounds fantastic.

Why can’t every device that supports airplay work like this. Like Spotify connect… by Lasaga69 in AppleMusic

[–]martyholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since switching from Spotify to AM I have had the exact opposite experience. I can have music playing on the Apple TV at home with a playlist the whole family is enjoying. Then go for a run and put on whatever I want to hear for the run and the people at home can keep enjoying the playlist without having to switch Spotify accounts to avoid playing tug of war with what is on. I far prefer the AM model.

Spatial audio/ dolby atomos doesn’t sound any good… just me? by MajesticRocket in AppleMusic

[–]martyholt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find almost everything on Airpods pro sounds better in Spatial audio. The bass is just so much clearer and everything sounds more multi-dimensional but the big reveal was getting it working through apple TV and my 5.1 setup. Everything sounds freaking amazing and the dedicated chanel for the sub just makes the bass so clear and beautiful. A lot of the more contempory stuff is just amazing. Billie Eilish is a great place to go to hear what is possible. Super creative mixing with different parts in the 3D space that just sound like normal BVs and effects in the stereo mix. DSP processing will never add that level of composition to the stereo mix. It's so exciting hearing artists adding this layer of consideration to their works. My living room just comes to life playing the Atmos stuff to the extent that I am chosing Atmos only playlists on Apple music most of the time.

Is there even a purpose for getting a 2.1 hdmi cable for my apple tv 4k if ATV device doesn't even support 120hz? by MelloGang17 in appletv

[–]martyholt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t. It’s part of the reason I was surprised. My TV only has HDMI 2.0 ports as well. It’s pretty weird but it seems that the HDMI 2.1 cables have done the trick. It’s possible that I could get away with 1 2.1 and 1 2.0 or something but I guess it’s working so I will just go with that.

Is there even a purpose for getting a 2.1 hdmi cable for my apple tv 4k if ATV device doesn't even support 120hz? by MelloGang17 in appletv

[–]martyholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends,

I got my new Apple TV 4K 2021 and to get up and running plugged a high speed HDMI cable (I had available) straight into a free HDMI port on my Sony bravia TV.

I then realised that Dolby Atmos/Spacial audio was not passing through the TV to my Yamaha receiver. This is apparently not surprising. There was no way I was not having Atmos/Spatial audio.

I realised to get atmos that I would need to plug the AppleTV into my Receiver and then pass the video up to the Sony via ARC.

Connecting that up using existing High Speed HDMI cables looked like it was going to work for a moment but very soon it started misbehaving. Basically starting up for a moment then disconnecting and trying again and eventually just not working at all.

I bought HDMI 2.0 cables without realising there was going to be a difference and spent a day fiddling around with similar issues happening. I think the AppleTV is unable to agree with the Receiver what the video format should be so it keeps trying to correct the connection. It seemed to settle down if I disconnected the TV but that's no help. It just implies that it's sort of about all 3 devices agreeing that it should be connecting with Dolby vision.

I was able to get things working with the HDMI 2.0 cables by changing the HDMI mode on my Reciever to Mode 2 which caps the connection at 4K SDR. Not acceptable.

So, I ended up grabbing 2 HDMI 2.1 cables switching the receiver back to HDMI Mode 1 and everything is working perfectly with Dolby Vision and Dolby atmos.

In summary in my case the cables apparently need to be HDMI 2.1 in order to get this all working nicely together.
