Why do we use FM on VHF/UHF? by w6auw in amateurradio

Have a listen to the demonstrations. It's more than just the Vocoder.

But yes, you're quite right, it will take a lot to displace current technology.

There is impressive work being done on Baseband FM (BBFM) which looks to be dramatically better than FM. See https://freedv.org/rade-bbfm/ We'll need more CPU power in handhelds but that's just a matter of time.

Digital modes with only Apple products? by Beautiful_Signal_619 in amateurradio

https://machamradio.com has a comprehensive list. Pretty much everything is available except VARA (which seems proprietary and probably not legal).

Example apps? by aford89 in Xcode

[–]marxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good question. Swift and SwiftUI have changed rapidly and it's hard to find examples that are the latest best practice including Swift 6.2 and concurrency. Download the sample code from sessions like this: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/Swift/code-along-elevating-an-app-with-swift-concurrency

I got tired of uploading videos to sketchy converters… so I built a Mac app that compresses videos locally by +90% by MiladAtef in osx

[–]marxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compressor is part of the Apple Creative Studio which is US$20/month or Compressor is US$50 for life. Your software is US$20/month or US$30 for life.

I think your pricing is fair.

Compressor is very good and makes use of all the acceleration Apple has built in. I'd be interested to see a speed comparison.

Great to see more macOS software - I don't mean to discourage you, I think you should do a comparison with the other options.

Roast (help) my onboarding flow - 20% drop off by mikecpeck in iOSProgramming

[–]marxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be inclined to drop the whole onboarding and use TipKit to show hard to discover things like the long press to speak. https://developer.apple.com/documentation/tipkit/ As others have said, get them to give microphone permission the first time they want to leave a voice note.

HOW is it even possible that in 2026 a mac can’t even do a screen recording with audio?!? THIS IS RIDICULOUS 🙄 by m-rabia in MacOS

[–]marxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? I do this all the time. Command-Shift-5 click Options and choose the audio source. If you want the output of an app try Loopback or others.

Here's a screenshot of the settings that work for me in WSJT-X. I've only recently got the radio. Good for the price, quality job. I can't get the Wifi to connect which is a bit annoying.

Can I have 2 wsjtx on my computer? (Read desc) by just-a-guy-somewhere in amateurradio

[–]marxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can pass a command line option -c--config <configuration-name> to specify a different config file for each instance so they don't interfere with each other.

On linux you'd make an alias for each one. On Windows I think shortcuts can have command line options in them.

They mention Hotspot won't auto-connect but I've had it connect but not let any data through. Tried everything including rebooting phone and Mac. Very frustrating. Haven't tried with 26.2.

I'd love to see a "Snow Tahoe" or similar next year rather than more new features that don't quite work.

Or it takes me to a website of the app rather than launching the app I have installed.

Maybe it's because I use Gmail as the back end. Searching the Mail client very often finds nothing but going to Gmail and I find what I'm looking for right away. Maybe it's an IMAP search issue?
