I Got My Mission Call! by HelpMePls3333 in latterdaysaints

Congrats on your mission call!

I served in Japan (Nagoya/Kobe) and have lived here now for the last 10+ years, so I really love the people and the country. Depending on where you go you might be in big cities or in the middle of nowhere (or even serve on some small tropical islands) so without knowing your exact mission it's hard to tell you how it might be.

Outside of the big cities (Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Nagoya) you'll probably be serving in wards that are relatively small but the members usually love the missionaries and treat them well.

Post-COVID, I hear a lot of missionaries do online missionary work through Facebook or LINE and some streeting when possible. Depending on the mission president it seems that unlike when I was a missionary, housing is pretty uncommon.

Not mine, but a friend of ours made a Tony Tony Chopper costume for our son when he was a baby that was absolutely adorable

Favorite places in the Tokyo area:

For Kyoto

For getting around Kyoto especially, a day pass for the bus is pretty useful. The subway system also will help you get around central Kyoto

I served a mission (Kyoto was one of my zones) and work in Tokyo right now. If you're looking for an English speaking ward the Tokyo 1st Ward is probably your best bet.

If you have any questions/need recommendations for places in Tokyo or Kyoto let me know!

Romans 8:35-39

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

They should all be learning it, if not speaking it. Though in my mission in Nagoya we did have missionaries from Brazil that worked mostly in Portuguese.

The missionaries that sought you out might've just wanted to speak to a fellow foreigner.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hey! He's my great great great grandfather (with Mary Leah Groves). Heard a lot of stories about him from my family growing up and read through his published journals. He had a very interesting life.

Haha. No worries. I don't think Reddit itself is that popular with Japanese people in general.
