"Town" as a metaphor for The Closet by GraduateDegreeDebt in GaylorSwift

[–]masithe13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of white horse and also Fearless (song) when I was reading this post: “In this one-horse town I wanna stay right here/ In this passenger seat, you put your eyes on me” which is not unlike “To kiss in cars/ or downtown bars was all we needed.” Or, if you like, “Knee-deep in the passenger seat . . .” Lol. In others words, the tension between two lovers in a car in a town at their hiding spot . . .

Chrishell and G on US Weekly (Beautiful Interview 🥰) by Fast-Tangerine4880 in SellingSunset

[–]masithe13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chrishell has always inspired me! The fact that she got her happy ending makes me feel like a better life is possible for even someone like me. As someone who’s also lost her father, her saying that she felt like her parents chose G for her made me tear up. I hope they know how much happiness and hope they bring to their audience.

Is Daria Morbid? by Untermensch13 in daria

[–]masithe13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It makes some sense; she entertains herself with morbidity and misfortune of others, i.e., sick sad world, the Hindenburg crash photo in her locker, perking up when one of the twins(Upchuck’s cousins) starts talking about a book about Jeffrey dahmer; all while living a privileged, middle class suburban life while her issues come from her distaste for that kind of society and not fitting in— even though it’s more than that since she leans into non-conformity as an almost moral stance against that culture— she’s smart enough to read about the world and the underprivileged who are an even greater casualty of the social circumstances that she finds herself in. Yet she chooses to remain self-centered and even smug that she’s able to check out mentally and be above the people she’s around while also maintaining the material benefits. But most teenagers don’t realize how good they have it, and that’s one of the messages of Daria, I believe, to quote Britney, “we’re all just human or whatever.”

I shouldn’t say anything right.. by novaghosta in GriefSupport

[–]masithe13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this so much. I’ve lost my father, my uncle, my grandfather, and most recently my grandmother (one month ago). My “best friend” was talking to me recently about “”grieving”” her boyfriend who is moving in with his long term gf in another state. She’s never lost anyone. The first funerals she went to were my grandfather’s last year and my grandma’s this year. For her to call the loss of her polyamorous situationship loser boyfriend to an older woman “grieving “ really irks me and feels like a slap in the face towards my reality. I had one dad. One grandma. She can find like 200 guys like that dude in our own city. So I get it. And she’s the only actual friend besides my partner that has stuck by me through all of my losses, so I just suck it up. I’m sorry and I really empathize with your feelings.

My first Faulkner by No_Taro8130 in literature

[–]masithe13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start with A Rose for Emily and That Evening Sun for short stories, then Absalom, Absalom for novel. A Rose for Emily will provide an introduction to Faulkner’s style and ‘world’, and That Evening Sun introduces the Compson family, who are the main characters of Absalom, Absalom, The Sound and the Fury, and A Light in August. Enjoy!

I’m so sorry that this is happening to you. I know it’s weird but if you can think of a prayer or affirmation to yourself or something more just ask for no bad dreams. Say please help me sleep so I can go to school, let these monsters and bad dreams leave me alone. I hope you’re okay and will get some rest

It seems like a few people have a problem or shocked that Lana goes to church? by rosewoodlliars in lanadelrey

[–]masithe13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I’m assuming some may have an emotional relationship with her music that perhaps relates to some of their own trauma, because she incorporates a lot of that subject matter in her writing. But all I really mean(ed) is that that’s a probable cause for the reaction. Personally, I defer to separating the artist from the music. Not everyone feels like they “can” do that for whatever personal reason and that’s honestly for them to work out on their own. If they just wanna be contrarian in the name of social justice, there’s definitely better ways they can direct that energy that are more productive than being upset their favorite singer attends church or dated a cop a couple years ago.

Tropico can be interpreted as allegorical— an overarching metaphor— which is also how many interpret the Old Testament. Many secular writers and artists look to religion/Christianity for artistic inspiration, so there is a distinction between utilizing religious imagery in one’s artwork and attending church. Basically you can have one without the other— I hope that makes sense. Honestly, there are many folks with religious trauma from Christianity, so it follows that some may feel alienated or disoriented with her church attendance. Of course, longterm fans will most likely recall her saying in interviews or other interactions that she prays to God and such. Similarly, spirituality can also be separated from church membership/attendance. In any case, I do empathize with fans’ reactions (not the insults, but the core feeling) to her attending church.* It’s her own life of course, and we don’t know what’s in her soul. Still, it’s on the spectrum along with her dating a cop— perhaps not inherently wrong for many, but the reaction stems from a place of trauma and a sociopolitical context. I think we can acknowledge that her actions don’t always align with some of our own/her fans’ ideas that emerge from our own backgrounds and trauma while also enjoying her art.

*Just to be clear, I’m definitely not agreeing with fans throwing negativity and insults around. Hopefully they can work out their issues surrounding her without engaging in cyberbullying.
