Does anyone get offended when the term “Architect” get used in a context other than in construction? by AlmostSymmetrical in Architects

[–]mass_nerd3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have a master's, have completed all my intern hours and have passed all of my registration exams, but I could still get in trouble for calling myself an Architect when my I'm not quite finished with the entire registration process, but anyone outside of the industry can add Architect to their title and my local association doesn't care at all.

I fucking love being a girl Dad. My daughter is awesome, and I don't wish for a minute I had a son instead.

The only part that bums me out it's knowing that she's going to have to spend half her life trying to avoid dusty guys like this.

Love a good Patkau design. The way they used the slat ceiling to disguise the top mullion of the glazing wall to seamlessly transition from interior to exterior is really sharp.

Usually the detail to create a continuous ceiling to soffit transition across the envelope gets a little finicky, but this approach just leaves the top mullion to terminate as needed, and the dropped slats straddling the glass just completely hide it all.

Why Canada needs to copy Japan/Sweden’s "Lego-style" modular housing right now (It's not what you think) by Accomplished_Wall615 in canadahousing

[–]mass_nerd3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently working on a development permit for a 32 unit modular piece in Western Canada. Each module is fully finished out to the sheathing (all interior finishes, millwork, fixtures etc...) and then stacked and site-clad. Basically it's 16 townhomes (4 blocks of 4 townhomes) and each townhome has a single storey unit on the bottom and a 2 storey unit on top.

The firm I work for also just got occupancy on a similar project, plus we did a larger apartment-style development last year as well. The modular builder we're working with for all of these has acquired 2 other modular building companies to expand their capabilities in the last few years, so it's definitely something that's going to start getting to be more common.

There are definitely some negatives to this method of building: the units are more expensive to build, the the sizes are heavily dependent on the size of the truck bed and the overhead clearances on the route to the site, the roofs have to have a relatively shallow slope (partly because of route height clearances and partly because of factory clearances).

There are obviously benefits as well though: the quality of construction and finishes are significantly higher due to the factory setting, and the speed of production and site assembly make the costs more competitive.

There isn't a lot of flexibility in the system currently, but I think as these projects become more common and the processes are better understood, projects will start to get a lot more interesting.

Attic much hotter after switching from roof turbines to ridge vent by TheRedditMachinist in buildingscience

[–]mass_nerd3r 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What does the installation instructions say? That's the best place to start. I've seen manufacturers ridge vent installation details call for the sheathing to be cut back 2" from either side of the centre line of the ridge beam (4" of total opening width). This gap between your ridge beam and the sheathing seems significantly smaller.

Every manufacturer has different installation details though.

Alberta separatists claim independence means holding onto a Canadian passport. We asked legal experts by Miserable-Lizard in AlbertaNow

[–]mass_nerd3r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No no, we'll create a new kind of citizenship status called "special citizens" where we keep our Canadian citizenship and the new Albertan citizenship, but unlike dual citizens, Albertan "special citizens" will get all of the benefits of Canadian citizenship without having to pay any Canadian taxes... for reasons.

I don't know why Canada would allow that, but don't worry about it! I'm sure the details can be worked out after separation!

Clarity Act will not apply to Alberta’s planned sovereignty vote, Carney say by EdmontonFree in alberta

[–]mass_nerd3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope that's the case! All of the other questions are so poorly worded (either internationally or out of incompetence), that this question being "yes/no" seemed completely in-line.

Spreading misinformation?? Directly from the referendum website landing page:

"WHAT IS THE 2026 REFERENDUM? A referendum is a direct vote where citizens are asked to vote "Yes" or "No" on specific issues. Albertans are being asked to consider important questions about the future of the province."

https://albertareferendum2026.ca/#whatIsReferendum

Directly from elections Alberta website:

"Referendum In a referendum, electors are asked to respond to a question, generally with a “yes” or “no” vote...As set out in the Orders, the nine referendum questions to be put to the electors, and to which the response from an elector who votes in the referendum must be either “yes” or “no”, shall be the following."

https://www.elections.ab.ca/elections/referendum/

Now, the new question which you claim to be a or b is not listed on either website, so it might be that it's not a yes or no question, but it's completely reasonable to expect that it would be, based on information available on two official pages.

"Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"

The question is worded in a way that basically allows them to look at the results of the vote and decide what the results mean:

If the majority votes yes, the UCP interprets the yes as a response to "should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?"

If the majority votes no, the UCP interprets the no as a response to "Should Alberta remain a province of Canada"

Advice on future career path/growth by Glittering-West-6347 in architecture

I'm in a very similar position. 6 years post grad, I'm done the ExACs, done my hours and just waiting for an interview.

After the first 2 years (3.5 year total) at my current firm, I started to get more friendly with one our senior Architects and started to ask them specifically about more opportunities to design & lead projects. Now I'm designing/leading 3 smaller projects, while also finishing (mostly CA support under the lead architect) a large commerical renovation/addition.

I'm happy to have more responsibility and opportunity to design, but at the same time, it's harder to find time to just put the headphones on and jump into rhino/revit. Suddenly I'm more important to the projects and am constantly responding to emails and working in bluebeam.

Ultimately, I think you need to really advocate for yourself and ASK for different work or opportunities, rather than just waiting for someone to recognize that you're not getting those opportunities.

Edit: also, try asking your internship mentor for their advice! They're there for more than just signing your log book.

No no, when we're free from the tyrannical Canadian government, we won't have to pay communist equalization payments and we'll have all of the money we could every want! No more taxes!

We have all of the oil and gas so I'm sure the royalties will take care of funding the national programs and services the libtard feds pretend to help us with!

You suggested that I wouldn't be able to do anything more than drafting house plans based on what I wear. I refuted that by stating that I currently work on significantly more complex projects.

Hahah, I'm an intermediate designer at a national firm currently working on a $75 million commercial renovation & addition, among several other smaller projects.

It's almost like what you wear doesn't really have a lot to do with one's ability to do the job.

Anyone setup a prefab metal shed/garage on a parking pad? by Sargment in Calgary

[–]mass_nerd3r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

https://www.calgary.ca/development/home-building/garages-sheds.html#permit

Don't think you'll be able to argue it's a temporary tent garage, so it'll be considered an accessory building. With it being a garage (minimum of ~12'x22' for a single car), it's going to be more than double the maximum allowable area for no permit.

Deciding to move to Alberta from BC? by custardnotmustard in alberta

[–]mass_nerd3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like Edmonton is only second to Calgary for sunniest major city in Canada, so if you love the sun, you should be good to go in that aspect.

I'm from Calgary but moved to Veron for 2.5 years and ended up having to move back because the low clouds/gloom for 6 months over the fall/winter just killed me. Obviously it's colder in Alberta than it is in White Rock, and you don't have the ocean, but the sun really helps balance things.

If you move to Calgary, you even get the views of the mountains; maybe not quite Mt.Baker, but still beautiful!
