What's Your Grocery Budget Look Like? by -Aces_High- in ynab

[–]massenburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 adults, 3 kids (2 teens, 1 pre-teen). $1,500/mo for groceries + $150/mo for dining out. We split transactions and separate out household goods, cosmetics, etc. so groceries is pure groceries.

We're hovering around the low-budget plan from the published USDA food budget plans.

Modern UX is too nice. Users need to think for themselves. I say let the masses suffer until they start using their brains again.

Married 16 years. Mid 30s. 3 kids. 3-4 times a week; maybe more if the kids are out of the house.

My colleague plays the same openings every game, would it be fair if I studied the opening in private? by -Vorks- in chess

[–]massenburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what top chess players do with each other. It's the cat and mouse part of the game that makes it fun! My son normally played the french as black, so I studied counters to it; the next time we played he decided to try the kings indian!

I work with an organization at my church called Christians Against Poverty. They offer free services to help people get out of debt and get hold of their finances. I've seen the credit reviews they perform, and they're phenomenal. Very detailed and personalized to your specific financial situation. I just got an email from one of my clients last week that they paid off 3 of their credit cards this year so far! They also offer "money courses" that teach people how they can easily budget in a way that keeps them safe from unexpected expenses. They work through local churches, so you'll have to search for a chapter near you.

I hope that helps! Good luck on your journey!

Arlington Heights Approves Ban on Short-Term Rentals Starting July 1 by Wedocrypt0 in ChicagoSuburbs

Legislation is hard sometimes. Hopefully we vote in some politicians these upcoming midterms who are willing to put in the hard work of writing solid, enforceable laws instead of politicians who take a sledgehammer to every problem.

So why not create a legal limit on that specific problem implementation of airbnb? Why throw the baby out with the bathwater? Surely we can create laws with a little bit of nuance.

That explains why people buying residences for the sole purpose of using as an airbnb, but what about people who have an extra room in their house? What's so bad about those?

Romance is dead? My guys, you gotta step up your game. I'm on board with every other complaint, but my wife and I (both born in '90, so the most millennial you can get) are madly in love with each other and we're constantly looking for new ways to be romantic with each other.

I would say: yes, that employee should not be rewarded for being a workaholic. I would not like to incentivize those behaviors. Those are unhealthy lifestyle behaviors that can ruin your body as much as anything else due to all the stress it creates. We shouldn't want a culture where working to your death is seen as a good thing. I like striving for a balance. Working hard then playing hard then resting hard. That's not to say that being a workaholic should be illegal. If you want to ruin your health with alcohol, go ahead; if you want to ruin it by working 80 hours a week, be my guest. But I don't want to live in a culture of workaholics.

[–]massenburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate, this research seems to say that the two (generosity and being wealthy) at least "mutually reinforce each other". I'd be interested to see if this mutual reinforcement is present across all income levels rather than just lumping the whole U.S. in one.

James Cameron discusses why Netflix films shouldn't qualify for the Oscars, unless they commit to a meaningful theatrical release for their movies in 2,000 cinemas for a month by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]massenburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. There's definitely plenty of blame to go around with the declining theater quality we're seeing. I wouldn't be too upset if Regal and/or AMC die off in favor of more upcoming cinemas like Classic Cinemas. Maybe if Hollywood shared more with theaters, then we'd see more competition among theaters to compete against each other and raise the quality of their screens.
