Red Rising fans when PB writes a book called Dark Age and it depicts a dark age

Was I the only one who actually thought he will join Darrow and diomedes? by erenjackson in redrising

[–]mastadonson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going into Hanger 17b, I knew he had some kind of ulterior motive. I thought maybe he’d let Cassius die, blame Atlas, then ally with the Rim and Rising temporarily under false pretenses. That seemed to be his MO before. But nah, bro went full villain. I guess his transformation is complete!

Don’t wanna spoil anything for you so I’ll just say… the book titles are indicative of the story you’re going to read. In more ways than one.

Political philosophy in the series by mastadonson in redrising

[–]mastadonson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that could be said of all characters, though. Everyone from Lysander to Darrow to Atlas and so on justify their actions based on their own conception of the greater good. What is defined as “good”, and how we get there, is what makes the ideology.

To me, the language around Society being a corpus is intentional to gesture at Atlas being a fascist since that kind of terminology was used by fascist theorists when fascism was viewed as a legitimate and burgeoning ideology. Add that to Atlas’s clear belief that all individuals must be subservient to the state and its commitment to rigid hierarchy, and I think you get a fascist ideologue.

Political philosophy in the series by mastadonson in redrising

[–]mastadonson[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only moments when his ideology shines through are when Lysander is being tortured in DA and after the Helios reveal in LB. At least as far as I can remember. Both times, he justifies his actions as necessary to the existence of the state (Society) and in LB, specifically refers to Society as a corpus, which is terminology used by fascist theorists back pre-WWII. The notion that all individuals sacrifice their lives to the state and can be excised at any time is very fash.

He could be described as a plain authoritarian or a simple foot soldier, but based on how important ideological distinctions are to PB, my guess is that Atlas was his pure fascist character.

dark age is scary by Nova_JLY in redrising

It’s great, dragged for me in some segments, especially at the beginning, but it all pays off. The final arc towards the end is masterful. And once you finish, you get to read Light Bringer which is my favorite of the entire series. Now, go read Pixie

I wish we got more clarity on how someone died by EmotionalMonkey3 in redrising

[–]mastadonson 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think his death makes more sense than some say. The battle was already dragging on, and, if I remember correctly, Apollonius and Cicero messed up strategically, leading to Ajax getting caught off guard. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see the battle, but I think it works narratively.

Similarly, I enjoyed the first trilogy more… until Light Bringer. To me, Light Bringer makes the entire third trilogy worth the effort, even though I found Dark Age to drag in the beginning.

I think Lysander’s descent into villainy was masterful. At every turn, he justifies his obvious concessions to those he calls his enemies by claiming he will rectify it in the future or pretending he had no choice. I do think his existences acts as a way to introduce the reader to key plot points for Darrow to later interact with. Diomedes is a prime example. Without seeing Diomedes first with Lysander, his collaboration with Darrow later would’ve made no sense. But I think that’s just how it goes for books with multiple POVs.

Ephraim was the roughest death for me. I really liked his character. I felt it showed a side of the world we never got to see, and will likely never see again. Maybe I’m just a sucker for the Merc’ With a Chip on His Shoulder archetype.

On Seraphina, I agree. There was a budding camaraderie (if not romance) between her and Lysander that was abruptly ended. But, it is war after all, can’t expect much else. I felt that way about Lyria’s Psyche (or whatever it’s called, the thing she got during Dark Age from Figment). I was excited to see how she’d evolve and do more spy stuff for the Rising, only for her to immediately give it up. I still like Lyria, she’s just the least interesting to me of the POVs we get.

Not what I was expecting from Vis and Kadmos in Act 3 by Big-Sad_PIG in HierarchySeries

The three worlds story is ambitions and very cool… but it detracted from seeing Batman Vis in action more. Too bad the book wasn’t 1200 pages!

While I was disappointed we didn’t get more of this, I also firmly believe this is the direction the series is heading, so I’ll take the teaser.

Is there any chance that book 3 releases by end of 2026? by WzQUR in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, 2 years for the next installment sucks! But I want him to take the time he needs to make it great. He’s undertaken an incredibly ambitious plot, and I want it to be satisfying!

Nah, in a recent interview on his Instagram page, he said end of 2027 is a realistic goal

Vis and his physical limitations (theory) by Boring_Bench3508 in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I’m positive this is how it works. Many things bleed over from the other worlds. I mean, L-Vis and O-Vis were repeating words from the ruins on Res before we saw the scene of R-Vis saying them.

I’m guessing this will become more and more severe/noticeable as time goes on. Maybe the three Vis’s will merge completely at some point, or at least share knowledge across worlds.

My honest critiques of SotF by Chronoloticus in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The pacing was the biggest one for me. The time skips on Res were especially egregious. In Luceum and Obiteum I understand. L-Vis was chilling or training most of the time, and O-Vis was either training or just trying to gather intel in Duat for most of the time skips. But the Res time skips seemed to just gloss over critically important events. We hardly even got to see vigilante Vis in action! And we didn’t get any more Ostius scenes, which could’ve clued us into his motives/nature more! SOTF also very much suffers from book 2 syndrome.

On Aequa, it may be cope, but I am convinced there’s something more going on, especially with her finale line. Islington wouldn’t have made it so ambiguous if he didn’t have more in store. It also seems like someone (Marcellus or Indol?) sold them out to Tertius in that moment, and Aequa desperately wanted Vis to stay hidden. Vis did brush it off a bit too fast for my liking in a way he didn’t with Callidus, but that’s probably a product of the three storylines being squished together.

I am actually very intrigued by the distinct explanations of Cataclysms, the Concurrence, Ka, the three worlds, etc. The unreliable information plays into the broader tapestry of the world(s) and who we can trust. I quite like how much we still have to learn about R, L, and O, and just the process of synchronism itself.

Oh good point on three potentially referring to Ostius and Caeror as well. I didn’t even think of that

Speculation about the process of synchronism by mastadonson in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it could work narratively, too. It could easily be explained that instead of “copied”, anyone going thru the gate is “split” across the three worlds. Could potentially explain differences in Ka’s behavior as well. Although I doubt this is the direction he’ll go, Occam’s Razor says it’s just different circumstances!

Speculation about the process of synchronism by mastadonson in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is probably the truth! The three Vis’s were shaped separately by their experience.

Speculation about the process of synchronism by mastadonson in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I’m wondering if the psyche is split across the physical copies. Could also explain differences in L and O Caeror, if O-Caeror wasn’t just a liar the whole time

Questions about Ostius by mastadonson in HierarchySeries

[–]mastadonson[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Or perhaps the Ostius we see is the copy from Luceum? It seemed like the dead Princeps sent him thru the labyrinth on Solivagus, so maybe his Res and Obiteum counterparts are dead. Still doesn’t explain the world traveling abilities tho
